Dead Reckoning Porter features roasted barley, crystal and chocolate malts, along with Centennial, Amarillo and Willamette hops. This beer is the bigger brother to our Rugged Trail Nut Brown Ale; it has a smooth caramel taste with a nice hoppy aroma because of the whole flower Centennial and Amarillo hops we will use in our hop back. Dead Reckoning is a sailing term related to navigation in the fourteenth and fifteenth century. It was a well-proven method that involved and known starting point and the skill of a navigator to reach other destinations, and that’s how we see beer. We have a known starting point and a known destination, but there’s hundreds of different ways to get there; that’s what great about making beer, especially our single batch beers. Since Dead Reckoning is only made as a cask-conditioned ale, it will only be available in bars that have a beer engine Hop Bitterness (IBU's) : 45; Color (SRM) : Black; Availability: Cask Conditioned Only; Malts: Pilsner, Crystal, Chocolate, Roasted; Hops: Centennial and Willamette; Yeast: Ale

I really liked the dark coloring of this brew, the nearly pitch black appearance and good sized head. The aroma was quite agreeable of roasted malts. While the pub's flyer said there was a taste of coccoa I honestly didn't pick up on that.

Poured out of the bottle into the glass is a dark muddy brown with a slightly reddish hue. The head that appears is pretty nice actually. The whole beer looks like a root beer float. Frothy tan head, that dissipates slowly into a creamy mess on top of the liquid. Aroma has heavily roasted malts for sure. some soft subtle sweetness from the caramel. And noticeable alcohol. Palate is full, rich and roasted. Love the flavour of this beer. Big and robust and super filling.

Chocolate milk and nutty coffee aromas leading to an abundance of English style malts. Dark body, huge lasting head and good lacing. Medium bodied, very malty with a good bitterness and it’s fairly dry as well. Nutty, dry roasted malts followed by flavors of toffee, chocolate, and coffee. Pronounced hop flavor and bitterness.

Wow! I usually don't like porters or stouts but I would definitely make an exception for this one. Pour is almost black in color with a thick beige head (lots of lacing). Aroma is kind of weak--hints of bitterness, roasted malts, and citrusy hops. Taste is unlike any other porter I've tried; bitter, some chocolate and roasted malts, and a hint of citrus (grapefruit). The reason I like this beer so much is its lack of coffee or espresso taste which is unusual for the style. I would definitely keep this in my fridge if it were available.

A solid pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces an almost four-finger thick, well browned, dark tan colored head. The head sticks around for quite some time and even leaves some layered lacing patterns on the sides of my glass. The beer is quite dark and almost a perfect black color, but does show a brilliantly clear, burnt ruby hue if held up directly to the light. The aroma is quite roast focused, but there is a solid backdrop of hop aromatics that while not dominant definitely add some pungency to the nose. Aromas of cold black coffee, citrus oil, toasted whole grain bread, burnt cocoa, and a dry, browned cracker note in the finish. As my nose adjusts the hop aromatics become quite a bit more focused, they actually compete and almost balance the roast character after a short time.Sweet malt up front is quickly tempered by a dry, bitter roast character and an herbal hop character. My second sip has me noticing a citrus-like hop component much more and this mixes in pretty well with a dry, dark chocolate note, a burnt caramel, and the commanding, but not harsh, roast character. The roast character really lingers on in the palate after each sip, there is a touch of herbal hop bitterness too, but mostly notes of burnt grain husks and black, bitter coffee. The hop character is really pretty big here and it works too; herbal hop notes of menthol, a touch of hemp are as noticeable, if not more sometimes, as the citrus notes of grapefruit and spicy, essential citrus oil. A solid biting bitterness gets a bit green at times in the finish and is a product of both the roast character and the hops, though you can separate out the two influences. I like the body of this beer, it has a touch of chewy malt richness to it, but overall it is quite drinkable without being too light to support the combined hop and roast grain character. Dark chocolate notes and toasted, yet faintly sweet, whole grain bread notes become more noticeable as the beer warms up and help to round the character out a bit.
I do like hoppy porters; this one strikes a nice balance between roast grain character and pungent hop notes, both are quite noticeable in their own right. A great beer I would be happy to spend an evening with.

Beer pours dark brown with nice head and excellent lacing. Aroma of grapefruit. Flavor was a blend of grapefruit hops and milky chocolate. Eh...not overly fond of those flavors together. Nice and smooth, but maybe a little watery. Just ok...wouldn't seek this out again.

I sure hope I'm reviewing the right beer here. Had a porter from Troeg's on cask the other night and I'm hoping this is it - do they make another? Thick tan head, dark brown color are noticeable in the appearance. I did not detect to much of a nose. Palate was malty and somewhat yeasty - with a hint of that funny porter bitterness. I enjoyed it.

Outstanding colour, head, aroma and a rich satisfing flovour! This is one great porter. Currently only available on tap as a speciality brew, I can only hope that some day Troegs may add this mervolous porter to their bottling line!

Cask... Poured a deep, dark brown color with a medium sized tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Strong hoppy aroma, light roast and caramel as well. Chocolate and roasted malt, caramel, possibly some toffee, with lots of hops all over this porter.
