We brewed this Black IPA in memoriam of Comet ISON, a 4.5 billion-year-old "sun-grazing" comet which flew too close to the Sun on November 28 and disintegrated. Northern Brewer and Mount Hood hops lend piney, woody notes while a new experimental hops variety (#05256) adds subtle resiny funk to the nose. These combine with smooth chocolatey malt leading to an aggressively hoppy but balanced finish.

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

If there is one beer that you have to get from Titletown, this is the one. Absolutely have to! Period. While its description mentions its chocolatey taste I found it something much more complex. This capture an irony cold ozoney flavor that captures the cold icey darkness of space. If it were up to me everyone watching the movie Gravity would have a large mug of this one to help them through the movie. As the bartender who served it said to me, "Many black ipas taste like stouts with hops thrown in." This is something altogether different and if given a blind taste test I wouldn't have thought it an ipa either. I would have just said it reminds me of looking out into the stars on a night that's 19 below. And tonight it is.
