This Belgian IPA has a malt bill of a Belgian Tripel and a hop bill of a Double IPA. The yeast I chose for this beer comes from one of the 7 Trappist breweries. Believe it or not, this is the first time in my professional brewing career that I have used dextrose (corn syrup) in a Terrapin brew. True to style no doubt. “Monk’s Revenge” (otherwise known as the “Big Nasty”) has all the flavor and aroma of a Double IPA while hidden beneath lies the malt character of a fine Belgian Tripel. I hope you enjoy my interpretation of this very fun style. Cheers! Spike

This beer is exactly what it says it is. It pours a hazy orange without too much head. You can really smell the hops and then the Belgian Tripel comes through. It tastes like it smells. You get all of the hops first, but for non hop heads, just when the hops are about to be too much, the Belgian Tripel aspect of the beer kicks in and finishes smooth. My only disappointment is that this is a one time beer. I think if a brewery is on to something good, they should put it into the rotation.

Boom! this Belgian is a creeper......abv is well hidden, and the hop & malt profiles provide for an easy drinking big ass beer. Thank you Lou for this wonderful offering. Belgian yeast, peppery spice, banana and lemon zest all in the forefront. Copper/amber color, quarter inch head and spotty lacing. Fairly bold and spicy, warming to the belly while maintaining a smooth character. Deep down I pick out the Tripel, but flowery/fruity hops allow a touch of IPA to play. Great medley of style traits that all work well together.

Big ass BPA! Golden pour with a tight tall head and nice lacing throughout. Belgian yeasts and esters meet big hops in the nose and palate, sweet and malty then hopped like hell, great bitter linger. A very good marriage of styles and nicely done.

2011 Vintage-9.6%: I like these affordable strong beers, rather than spending $7-8+ for a 22oz or over $10 for a 750ml. That being said, was not really in love with this brew. Felt like it had potential to be more, but seemed a bit overcarbonated which affected the flavor somewhat. Good citrus-piney aroma and taste, with some yeasty/wheaty Belgian notes. Thinking that rather than these hybrid Belgian/IPA crosses, I enjoy a straight DIPA or strong Belgian Ale instead. I believe the hybrid that I enjoyed the most is Stone's Cali.

Bottled@Akkurat, Stockholm. Copper colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is fruity and floral hops along with some caramel malty and mild grassyness. Flavour is fruity, mild floral hops along with caramel and crystal malts. Long bitter finish.

Has a rich, fruity, hoppy aroma that demands at least a taste. It pours a light clear coppery orange with a fairly thick and fluffy buttery off-white head. Flavor is quite hoppy yet minimally bitter, and has a firm fruity overtone, mainly apple with hints of banana and grapefruit. Texture is edgy, fizzy and lively, nipping at the tongue. Another winner from Terrapin!

A fuzzy orange-amber colored beer. A small frothy textured, off white head rises above and disappears nearly as quickly. Impressive film and light cap-ringlet are left behind. Floral hops in the nose. The body is light to medium. Creamy. Low carbonation. There is heat on the palate. Floral hops dominate in the taste. And as I finished writing this up, a sip and a burst of melon sweetness. What a surprise!

Not a bad beer. This beer pours a nice golden color. The head is pretty thin but it hangs around the whole time. The aroma is sweet and warm, the taste is much of the same it has a tint of hops followed by a nice sweetness and warmth (from the ABV) overall I would have to say I am impressed.
