Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "Lupus salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, Humulus lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. They’re starting to bottle Pliny the Elder now. Nice solid white head. Aroma is an absolute killer!! This is what an IPA is supposed to smell like. Smells just like the last brand new hop supply I opened from the homebrew shop. Golden color. Very pretty. Flavor goes hand in hand with the aroma. This is awesome. Do you like hops? Then search this out!! You won’t be disappointed. I had this on tap at the brewery and my tasting notes didn’t rate it nearly as high as I have it here. The only thing I can think of is that it was warmer and not as carbonated there, which the bottle was chilled more, which probably concentrates the hop flavor, and certainly feels a lot more carbonated.

On Tap @ the Liar’s Club. Clear light copper color with lasting off white head. Nice sheet of lacing. Mouthwatering piney hop aroma that demands you to take a swig. Full rich mouth feel with subtle malts flavors peaking through the iron veil of pine hop flavor and bitterness. There is a tasty lingering hop bitterness deep into the aftertaste. Ths is something I could drink all day. YUM.

51cl bottle at RBESG, Tallinn. Pour clear golden with a white head. Quite intens hoppy aroma with pine, herbs, citrus and fruits. Medium sweet with lovely hoppy flavours and a strong, but balanced bitterness. Really tasty stuff!

Had this for the first time on tap at Stone Brewery in San Diego. Wow, the hype that I heard about before hand was not hype at all. This beer lives up to what everybody says. Great aroma and flavor. Not over the top in either like you see in some DIPA’s.

Bottle: poured a hazy orange copper that cleared up a bit. The head fluffy lacing off white. Aroma is a nice citrus fruit and floral hops. Taste I nice hops front with a soft grain malt balance. Very fresh and drinkable thanks to timfoolery. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear dark yellow, off-white lacing foam head. Nice hoppy aroma and strong bitter taste. Long lasting aftertaste. A through hoppy beer. (Houston 201705)

What can be said that hasn't been? One of the finer examples of a West Coast IPA with more malt body than some. Well balanced with medium body. Nice colour, orange/crimson/amber. Citrus, Pine some light spiciness to the aroma and flavour. Fills the mouth and drops down so easy. Not overly bitter, not really complex, almost slightly sweet at times, but completely enjoyed.

A nice dipa with lots of caramel and hops and a good alcohol burn. Not as complex as I would have thought based on other reviews. Seems fairly straight forward for the style, its no Hercules.

Fun, finally able to try another Russian River thanks to Dave! Pours dark yellow, fluffy white head and tons of lacing. Aroma and flavors of pine predominate, along with a nice hop bite. All in all OK but am hoping for more from the remaining choices in the fridge.

Bottle pour into a pint - bottle date 5/16/12 - so this is pretty fresh. The pour is orange hued with a sticky white head that caps nicely and laces the glass beautifully. Pine dominates the aroma, along with grapefruit and lemon notes. The mouthfeel is superb, as this is supremely drinkable with pleasant carbonation. This is a hop bomb. Notes of the aforementioned pine dominate, but citrus tones challenge and it finishes with a nice, sweet malt backbone. Certainly worthy of the praise, even with new comers that challenge its throne, Pliny is still in the top 2-3 in its style.
