We brewed this beer originally at the end of 2008 as a farewell to growler sales. As usual, we underestimated the demand for the first Double IPA in Minnesota. We brewed the beer again in the spring and released it as a draft only beer. It was originally called 16 Grit, a size of abrasive grit used at the old Abrasive factory that once stood where the brewery now resides.

16oz can -
Aroma - a dry-hop extravaganza. Mangos, oranges, grapefruit and pine needles.
Appearance - hazy orange body, 2-finger head, average retention, no lacing
Mouthfeel - medium carbonation, medium-full bodied, creamy mouthfeel
Flavor - green pepper/vegetal hop, sweet oranges, pine sap pronounced. Long bitter, abrasive finish...heh
Overall - if Surly managed to align the flavor with the aroma look out. As it is, an excellent beer. -

Was at the liquor store last week and found this gem actually calling my name as I approached it. I love Furious and had this beer once before many years ago on tap when it was still called "16 Grit". It pours a cloudy, pale orange/amber color with a thin white head into a pint glass. The head quickly shrinks and forms a thin cover on the top of the beer which leaves a bit of stringy lacing on the sides of the glass. The smell is out of this world. Citrus aromas, with grapefruit, lemon and orange lead the first attack on the senses. I also detect a bit of pineapple, sappy pine cones and fresh cut flowers. The first sip is utter bliss. I get all of the same aromatics on the tongue, which almost never happens. So many times I am let down with the taste after the smell, but not here. The hops do dominate, but there is a firm malt background which finishes the flavor profile. The impending bitterness lends me to pick up the glass for another mouthful. If there was some sort of hybrid of edible hops and citrus fruit, this would be it. The long-lasting resinous aftertaste is amazing and seems to increase as the beer warms up a bit. Mouthfeel is full and robust. The alcohol is well hidden and it takes me almost an hour to get through a can, mainly because I am savoring the taste and want it to last as long as possible. I love American style IPA's and IIPA's, but this may just be the best one in that style that I have ever consumed. Currently one of favorite beers and may just be forever. Over the top! Unreal! A bit pricy (a 4-pack of pint cans was $18), but worth every penny, IMO, it's that good. Highly recommended to any hophead who has yet to try it. As close to a perfect score I have ever given.

Furious who? Just kidding, both great beers, but Abrasive really scrapes the tongue. And the aroma is out of this world. I thought the body could be fuller to match the hops, but hey, I guess that makes it easier to have another!

Wow! Pours a light amber with a massive white head that takes its time. Minimal carbonation. Aroma is extremely fresh hopped with very noticeable wine characteristics. Taste is plain and simple, Stong! Fresh hops galore with a lot of pine notes to it. Very dry and bitter but extremely drinkable. Finishes off dry and slightly fruity with a pine kick. Now this is a beer. Surly has done it again!

Top tier IPA right here, one of the best I've wrapped my lips around in a while. Sticky to the Icky with full on pine and huge citrus. Grapefruit is in the lead followed closely behind by lemon and mango. Cloudy yellow body with a touch of orange tint, huge rocky head and a thick coat of white lacing around the glass. Catty and very resinous along with a medium malt body. Well rounded bitterness. Holy crap this is amazing.

Son of a gun. This beer kick ass. How, Surly can you make a beer so amazing?! Lucky me I have one can of it left in the cellar. Pours a beautiful, cloudy orange colour with a sweet, white head. Taste is tropical, well hopped with sticky icky, dankified sweetness. Pine is evident throughout. Absolutely fantastic brew.

wish list beer from Travis. abrasive pours a dark deep golden. nice head. feel is slick and smooth. 10 weeks or so old, still smells fresh, maybe a little restrained on the hop flavor, which is still vibrant piney and grapefruit peels. very nice. Surly knocks another one out.

So, after PfoxyJohn breaks out the Furious, he adds the Abrasive. Helluva guy! @IrishPfist 2012. Slightly murky orange amber pour, smallish head, good lacing. HUGE hops aroma, citrus and slight pine, floral and big, then a smidgen of malts. Huge earthy pine hops bitter in the upfront taste, lingering oh so nicely, piney, citrusy, then a touch of sweet malts, then more bitter linger. HUGE beer. Not for the faint of heart. Many thanks to John for breaking these Surlys out.

Huge citrus bomb in the nose, jumps right outta the glass. The flavor is much more subdued but the ibus are high as hell. Big sweet sticky citrus start that finishes resin full of pine. Another surly masterpiece. Thanks John!
