Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Nice head, good retention. An almost black body. Nose is hoppy with pine and citrus and some maltiness. Medium bodied, lightly oily. Decent hop flavors as mentioned before with light roast and chocolate flavors caramel too. Darker malt flavors appear moreso as it warms up. Decent hoppy finish, tad sweet, more bite woulda been nice. Bottle shared by Robert @statelineliquors, thanks bro!

Bottle: Poured a deep black color with bubble head. Aroma is roasted malt. Taste is sweet malt, light hops not what I expected in a IPA.

Bomber pours clear deep mahogany with thin mocha head. The aroma has pulses of cherries, dark roastiness, a touch of chocolate and some earthiness. The taste is dark and roasty malts and a bit of sweet ripe cherry fruit sweetness and then quickly moving into earthiness, black licorice like hoppiness and a growing sense of figs, dates and crushed black pepper. It seems to end with malt roasted and sort of an earthy astringency, it’s mild in strength, drying it out a bit while some sweetness seems to linger deep into the after taste.

Black with nice light brown foam head. Aroma is hoppy. Taste mostly liquorish, some raisin, small bitter. Bitter aftertaste. Still a nice beer. (Budapest 201311)

The beer is jet black with brown highlights and a sparse ring of film around the edge of the surface. Aromas are malty and roasted, with hints of fig and coffee. Some light hop aromas are present. Flavors are rich and robust on a light, crisp body. Coffee roast, dark chocolate, fig some citrus hops are around but not up front. The increased carbonation and the thinner body keep everything light. Aftertaste is light and quick, with some roast coffee flavors. Not a bad beer but i should of had this before the Hopadillo black IPA.

Browny black pour, thinnish like a Schwarzbier, nice light tan head, some lacing. Nicely roasted malt aroma and upfront taste, with some light molasses and brown sugar sweetness, some chocolate, offset by pine and earthy hops. Nice linger. Easy to drink especially @ 9%.

Black pour as the style suggests with a thin beige head. Surprisingly weak aroma of bitter roasted malt and piney, earthy hops. Taste is much the same which is a disappointment considering the "bigness" of the beer. Rather bland for 9% abv.

Rich aroma is oily and smoky with tones of caramel, semi-sweet chocolate and burnt molasses, rather like a good stout. It pours a dark chocolate brown that is barely translucent just at the edges and has a thick, fluffy, fine-bubbled, pale tan head that leaves fairly heavy lacing. Flavor is rich and mouth-filling, mainly like semi-sweet chocolate with hints of smoke, molasses, caramel, toffee and licorice. Texture is slick and smooth with a subtle alcohol bite and a firm fizz so it leaves a strong, persistent tingle behind. Overall, this is more like a stout or porter than a strong ale. I strongly recommend this one.
