Indigenous to northern Europe, Baltic Porters historically stem from the shipping of British porters to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic Porters are often brewed with lager yeast, which is the tradition we follow. Big & bold, with flavors of coffee, dark fruit & raisins, this black beer is smooth as a chocolate swirl.

Pours black with a thick tan head that dies down to a thin layer. Strong aroma of anise seed and licorice, ripe plums drenched in molasses and rum, with light chocolate and coffee notes. Strong toffee and molasses notes up front, plums and raisins follow with some light rum and dark chocolate. Finishes on the dry side, with lots of anise seed and licorice spice, and some smoky coffee. Very nice beer, goes syrupy big to spicy and dry start to finish. Huge chewy mouthfeel, yet refrains from being cloying. Another winner from Smutty, will likely do great things with a bit of age in the cellar.

March 2018: 355 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. Black colour, large tan head. Aroma of roast malts, coffee, prunes, raisins and chocolate. Soft mouthfeel. Medium sweet flavour, with the same elements as the aroma. Fairly low bitterness. Enjoyable.

PINT tasting @ Moortgat. Black/ruby clear, light brown lacing foam. Coffee tones in aroma. Bitter taste with fruity tones, but not overwhelming. Just nice. (Arnhem 201511)

FINALLY Smuttynose is in Tennessee. Fantastic representation of the style. Nice bronze pour, ample head and lacing. Lightly smoky and sweet nose and palate, very easy mouthfeel - smooth, chocolates, rich roasted malts. Just damn tasty. Love a good Baltic Porter.

2013 edition. Who new that a beer with larger characteristics could taste so excellent. The flavour and mouthfeel make me drool. Aroma and appearance not too shabby either. Next time I see this I will buy more than one. Love it and not a bad price.

Big sipper that was superbly enjoyable. This specific release has alluded me over the years so I surprised to see and quick to grab while down in North Carolina. Malt forward, thick and rich that fills you up. Brown to near black pour, billowing dark tan head and a thick coating of lacing. Bunches of chocolate, molasses, licorice along with a touch of coffee and vanilla. Finally a medley of dark berries provides an underlying sweet fruitiness to lightin up the heavy malt profile. Stunning brew, hope to cross paths with it again and again.

A great beer. A present from my wife's sister. A very black liquid filled the glass with some creamy brown foam on top. Lots of coffee and chocolate in the aroma with some fruity notes. Berries I think. Great tasting with no trace of the alcohol whatsoever. Dark chocolate was the predominant flavour.

This poured a pitch black color with a beige head. The aroma contains some dark fruit, coffee, and licorice. A slight smoke presence is also there. The flavor is rather bitter with the coffee really showing up. Some chocolate, licorice, and dark chocolate is also present. The finish has some booze present with more bitterness. Overall a good beer.

Bottled in 2010: Aged for about 1.5 years. Seemed heavier/stronger than 8.7% This is one bold beer. I've been trying to find this for a couple years now, so finally found it at Knightly Spirits/Orlando...thinking I should have bought 2! Sort of like an IPS, but with some more hop to it. Will probably age the next one an extra year or two. Also curious to try this fresh, as it almost seemed TOO strong with age....if that makes sense?

Fantastic. Pours black with a decent tan head. Nose is chocolate. Mouthfeel is smoooooooooooth. Flavor is nice, has a nifty after finish that is interesting but I'm not able to describe. Really really liked it a lot.
