Shiner Dunkelweizen is a crisp, hearty brew modeled after a Bavarian-style dunkelweizen, German for dark wheat. Shiner Winter Ale is fermented with an old-world technique called Kräusening, brewed to be smooth and rich without being heavy on the palate. Its subtle flavors come from the brew’s malted wheat and malted barley. This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer. I don't know if I got a weird batch or what, but the six-pack that I sampled for the review smells amazingly delicious! Pours a dark reddish brown with a decent persistent head. Aroma, where to begin: dates, brown sugar, caramel, and a hint of pineapple if you can believe it. Tastes of caramelized wheat malt, with a little dried fruit and some metallic tinges. Lacing is pretty good. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite live up to the smell, but it doesn't taste bad either.

A deep amber colored body with decent carbonation and a mid sized white cap. Aroma of roasted malts and a little earthy. Taste of caramel and roasted malts but there was a metallic presence that spoils it. Overall its is an o.k. brew but not one i would try again. Shiners winter version of this beer is alot better than the regular dunkel it is brewed with pecans and peaches and that gives it a really nice taste. Even though there was still a metallic twinge to it I found it to be much more enjoyable. i would rate the winter version at 3.7. try the winter version if you can find it. I hope that the winter version is given its own review space since its revised seasonal flavors make it a different beer.

Aroma is hearty with faint overtones of ripened banana and dark plum with maybe some figs coming through and is very clean and inviting. The appearance is a deep mahogany to sherry in color with a large and frothy head on top that is light-tan in color and diminishes to a light and thin lacing that sticks to the glass. The mouthfeel is medium to full-bodied with decent malty complexity as well as balance with a palate that is smooth and creamy. The flavor is malty, bready, sweet, robust, as well as a bit spicy to some extent and maybe a bit nutty with an aftertaste that is of sweet malt and a finish that is robust but light, well-rounded but smooth and pretty good. Overall, nice attempt at the style but does not hold a candle to Spaten's Fransikaner dunkel weizen; a less than sensational brew here but very drinkable...

This did not leave much of an impression on me. The head was rather thin. The color was a bit lighter than I would expect from a Dunkel. The flavor was slightly sweet but mostly kind of sharp. Sort of missed the mark on this one.

This dunkleweizen pours a dark brown color form a 12oz bottle. Large to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is malty and sweet, maybe a hint of caramel. A light to medium bodied dunkel. Malts are caramel and sweet. Not much else. Sweet malts and kind of bland. Soft carbonation. Smooth taste. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

i like the label....bats and all...this is a beer that pours dark tan with good head...is pretty clean for a dunkel...smooth and refreshing but alittle off the tracks.

Appearance is beautiful! Pours a very nice violet amber color with a large tan head. Effervescence is moderate, with crystal clarity. Aroma is light, but earthy; little discernable otherwise. Mouthfeel is crisp and thin, but clean. Flavor is not bad, but not quite what I was expecting. Seems to be a little metallic, sharp and thin for my tastes. Overall, this is a very pretty beer whose taste does not quite live up to its appearance.

This is Shiner's best beer, in my opinion. A deep, burnished walnut color in the pint glass, very malty and complex, sweet and hoppy. And, as with most winter warmers, the alcohol will really sneak up on you, so make sure you're already at home with your feet up before you crack this one open. Be sure to look for it this winter.

The aroma is raisin bread, bananas, and chocolate. The apperance is a reddish brown with a moderate head. The flavor is quite malty with a hint of wheat, chocolate, and berries? The aftertaste is fairly dry and a bit watery. A decent sipper and about as much that can be expected from Shiner.
