This beer pours a copper color with good clarity. A small head diminishes quickly, but it gives some nice lacing. Aroma is about the best I'd expect from a vanilla entry of this style; caramel, toffee and raisins. Flavor is basically just a single note of toffee, but there's nothing unpleasant here, so that's good. It's a solid doppelbock. Bought at New Beer Distributirs on Chrystie in Manhattan.

2007 edition. Lots of debris is visible, even having tried to avoid pouring the dregs. That said, the body looks very good and lacing is present, albeit fine. Aroma is amazing! Various dried fruits like raisins, dates, figs, with apples, caramel, toffee, and notes of hardwood. Flavor is very sweet, with all aforementioned aromas present, with brown sugar and a bit of bitterness like scorched malts. I think my bottle has seen too much sunlight, as some skunkiness is hidden behind the sweetness. This is very good; hopefully I can acquire a cleaner sample somewhere down the line.

Aromas of caramel, toffee, dates, tobacco, and a hint of bubble gum. Mouthfeel is a little unctious, but I expect that in such a rich beer. Flavors include toffee, anise, dried fruit, coffee, and pine. Some pretty serious hops are apparent here as well, which gives the taste a strong finish. This ranks pretty highly in my book, and I find it comparable to DFH World Wide Stout, so much so that I want to look at my review of WWS to compare numbers.

Smuggled this from my San Diego trip; the Stone Bistro is really cool, by the way. Sort of mediciny aroma from the anise, with roasted coffee, and bits of cocoa and caramel. It looks really good: very opaque black with a thick, sticky brown head, and medium daubs of lace. It tastes precisely as described on the bottle, buttloads of anise! I'm not really a fan of anise, but I don't hate either. I definitely appreciate the clarity of tastes in this beer. It's everything present in Stone's Imperial Russian Stout with the added intensity of anise. There is a rich creaminess to the taste, cocoa and mocha.

Vintage 070712. Pours hazy brown with little head and light spots of lacing. Smells a bit sour with dates and toffee. Tastes very sweet at first, but as I acclimate my pallette I get dates and dried fruit. Still a very sweet Flemish brown, with a subtle sour finish. Pretty good, but still very sweet. I could see this improving with age, so I'll hold onto my 12 oz (currently sampling from a friend's bottle).
