Handsome and has an enticing aroma, but the flavor's a little flat. Not bad, mind you--and definitely better than their bock--but this year's limited release is just nowhere near as good as the 97 (which was a schwarzbier).

After reading a lot of the other reviews, I'm going to guess the one bottle I tried of this wasn't treated very well. Oh, it was a handsome jet black in the pint glass, with ruby tones held up to the light, but it had a harsh smoky flavor that put me off a bit. Not bad, per se, just seemed a little unbalanced to me. If I see it again I'll try it again, and modify my review if it's tastier next time.

Perhaps a little smokier mouthfeel than some of the other imperial stouts I've had. Still, this little jet black wonder is delightfully malty and hoppy, and so smooth the alcohol is really well masked. I'm not in general a "big beer" fanatic, but I would definitely have this one again.

Mmm...hops. Love the hops. Lot of hops in the nose, but the flavor didn't just whack you over the noggin. Plenty of sweet malts to back up the hops. This was a very pleasant beer. I'd drink it again.

True to the style, I'll give it that. Handsome amber color, malty aroma, full mouthfeel, smoky malt flavor. Hops in the background. Had the caramel hints to it. Pretty much all you'd expect from an amber ale, but other than that, nothing to make it stand out much.
