Saranac Black & Tan

Pours a deep brown color with a tan head which has some retention and then fades giving a small amount of lacing. The aroma is of some roasted malt with hints of chocolate with some light vanilla as well. The taste is of some nice dark chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor has some sweetness up front with flavors of vanilla and caramel sweetness. The mouthfeel has a good creaminess with light carbonation and medium boided..

Spotty. Pours a deep rich black color with a thin, quickly disappearing head. Crisp , but too much so - lacking in richness and depth. Non-obtrusive overall.

Medium brown pour with a tight creamy head and a little lacing. Aromas of slightly sweet malts, some brwon sugar and slight hops. Taste is smooth with a good blend of dark and light. Not very rich, slightly thin.

THis beer came as part of my microbrew of the month selection. Beer pours a dark brown color with a medium head. Smell of malts and sugars. Flavor is malts and a little sweetness at the end. Not overly impressive, but ok.

This has been one of my favorites, affordable and dark. Love the roasted earthly flavors of coffee and a touch of chocolate and it looks good in the pint glass...black with a tan head.

Big thanks to Mike D. for bring this and a whole slew of other beers back from his trip to NY. Can't wait to get on them. So first up is Saranac's Black and Tan. My last experience with these guys was average at best. Would I get the same type of beer? Unfortunately, yes.

The beer pours out a dark brown/black body with a thick light brown/tan head. Head dissipates really quickly, and no lacing left behind to speak of. Aroma is roasted malts, roasted nuts, brown sugar, and wet paper. Flavor has more of the roasted malts, nuts, chocolate with some residual sweetness. Finishes smooth with a light touch. Not a heavy stout by any stretch of the imagination.

WEll really, can you enjoy a black and Tan that comes in a bottle? Where is the visual appeal? This pours a not quite opaque dark brown with Ruby highlights, a decent beige colored head with OK retention and very nice lace. Nose is surprisingly hoppy for a combination of an "irish stout with an all-malt German style amber lager". Lots of pine and cirus notes, not much toasted malt in the nose. Mouth is a touch thin and a touch slick, not too bad really but maybe a touch under-carbonated. First taste didn't have much flavor but it was too cold, its filling out some now, will take a break for 10 minutes or so. Now I am noticing a big fruit flavor at the finish which is preceded by a bit of chocolate and rounded out with pine and citrus hop notes. A bit creamier mouth as well. I am not sure this should be classified as a stout, its an odd duck. Does not much resemble a traditional Black and Tan, a bit watery for a stout, not as sweet as a porter but pretty easy drinking.

Okay rhis was the second of the 'dark' ales from the mixed six pack. A deep, opaque ebony beer. The head is tanish. Settles all too quickly into a nice lacing. I get a soft aroma of burnt malt and coffee. The taste is of coffee, burnt chocolate and a bittering that is really nice. This one is a decent representation of Black and Ran beers.

Black and Tan is a blend of an Irish style stout and a German style all malt lager. It has a dark body with amber hues. The head is tan, thick, and it makes good lacing on my pint glass. Roasted malts, hops, caramel and toffee notes, fill your nose. On the tongue there are flavor notes of roasted malts, toast, espresso, and wild tart blackberries. The bitterness of the hops surrounds and balances everything nicely and leads to a slow bitter finish. It has a nice medium body and a creamy smooth mouth feel that makes it very enjoyable.

Pours out in a clear dark brown colour with fluffy off-white foam. Fudge, sweet pears, cereals and brown sugar in the clean aroma. Clean flavour of caramel, rubber and grass with touches of burnt malts. Clean and almost watery mouthfeel. Short clean finish of toffee, resin and oranges with notes of cereals, hay and rubber.
