    Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz long neck bottle into a pint glass. There appears to be no freshness date. Appearance: The body very light and has a very pale straw color with very good clarity. Its head is bright white in color and made of a loose foam which light and quickly fades out. Smell: Light grain and clean wet straw notes are just noticeable in the modest light nose. Taste/Palate: As expected the body was light and thin with a very clean bready/cracker like pale malt. Hops added pale straw like flavor, balanced bitterness and a crisp finish. Underneath is just the very slightest hint of a white grape skin flavor note. Notes: Overall this is your basic pale thin hot weather lager. It was clean, drinkable and well, boring. Anyway I can now say that I have had a beer from the continent of Africa!

    Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pt. 0.9oz bottle into my big Spaten Oktoberfest Stange glass. There is no freshness date on the label but it has a bottle number of 3438 printed on the back. Appearance: The body has a dark brown color with lighter brownish red highlights. On top sits a nice light tan head which was about two fingers thick right after it was poured. This head slowly fades but hangs on till the last sip, (not that it took me long it get there lol). There was some nice slick lacing, as well, which slid right down the glass as I drank. Smell: The aroma is pleasing and sweet with notes of dark sweet bread, cooked or burnt sugar, as well as some mellow notes of over ripe fruit and classic German hops. Taste/Palate: It has a firm, slick, full bodied palate with a flavor profile that matches its aroma. The flavor is full dark sweet bready malty goodness. There are some hints of nuts and fruit mixed into the mostly sweet malt along with some decent leafy/spicy, almost earthy hops for balance. The hops also add a nice balance to the finish making it quite drinkable. Notes: This is a very enjoyable and drinkable big beer. Just look out for the solid 7.4% abv. that will sneak up on you.

    Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz. long neck bottle into a pint glass. There is no mention of abv. but the label reads that this was a 2008 vintage Imperial Stout. Appearance: It pours thick and dark. The color is a very dark brown/black with a light brown head on top. Its head is nice tightly packed two finger thick foam that has very good retention and slick lacing. Smell: The aroma has a full rich nose of sweet and roasted barley with a touch of woody and smokey malt. The hops add an almost citrus like note and there is a noticeable hint of the alcohol. Taste/Palate: Its flavor is full of dark roasted malty character and complexity. There are flavor notes from sweet molasses and maple sugar to coffee, bitter dark chocolate and woody/smoke/charred malt with bitter herbal and citrus like hops. Mellow nutty/grainy alcohol notes mix in as well and add anther layer of complexity. The palate is firm and smooth with just enough carbonation to give it some life. Notes: This was a nice solid example of the style, one which I would enjoy anytime I was in the mood for a dark complex stout.

  • Harpoon Celtic Ale

    Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 8

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a mug. The bottle has a "best by" date of 04/15/10 printed on to the bottle and it was sampled on 2/11/10. There appears to be no abv info available on the label. Appearance: Its body is deep amber in color and it shows very good clarity. A quick poor makes for a tall foamy head. It is off white to a very light tan in color and it slowly fades down to very thin filmy covering as I drink. Its lacing is minimal, spotty and slick. Smell: The aroma fairly light with some hints at malt and light leafy hops as well as touch of something with mineral like edge. Taste/Palate: There is mix of pale biscuity, dry white bready and sweet malt as the base flavor note. Hops add there balance of leafy and herbal flavor as well as some bitterness and dryness. The body has a medium feel with good carbonation and an easy drinking light but note too light texture. Notes: Overall I would say that this is your basic/average Irish style Red Ale. It's not bad at all but it doesn't stand out either.

  • Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into mug. The bottle has no apparent freshness date or abv percentage. Appearance: The body has a very deep amber color with good clarity. On top sits a tall light tan head that was produced by a fairly vigorous poor. It slowly fades but hangs on well, keeping a thin covering to the end. Smell: First off the aroma hits with a pleasant bouquet of floral, citrus and herbal hop notes with sweet maltiness coming in right after. Taste/Palate: The flavor follows suit on the aroma with a good mix of hops and sweet lightly toasted maltiness. The floral and citrus hop flavors are up front with sweet and very lightly toasted malt flavor moving in to the middle to balance the hops. On the finish herbal like hops take back over and bring dryness and pleasant bitterness. The palate has an easy drinking medium body that slides right down with just enough carbonation to give it life. Notes: All things considered this was a fine example of Red Ale and enjoyed drinking it.
