Harpoon Celtic Ale

Pours dark red with a medium sized head that slowly fades and leaves a little lacing on the glass. Malty aroma. The taste is bread, hops and some malt. An OK beer. I can take it or leave it.

Harpoon has been hit or miss for me. This one was a miss. Not bad, just lacking flavor and aroma. Hop finish is about the best thing going here. This is light on the malt which leads to a weaker, less-bodied flavor. Mouthfeel is decent and a little above average.....the rest of the beer is forgetable. Glad I tried though so I know what not to get in the future if I'm at an airport/Harpoon Cafe, etc. and trying to decide on which style to get.

Nice light red color,excellent flavor,decent carbonation with little top, my bottle said best by 5-15-2010 so i did not get it at a premium time.But, it helds its ground and still was an overall great beer.Will try to find it fresh this spring.

I got this beer as a leftover from a SuperBowl Party. I actually like Harpoon, however, this one missed the mark. For me, the gold standard for Irish Reds is O'Hara's, Smithwick's, or even Killian's. This was not real good - it was thin and rather plain. But, free beer is good beer.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a mug. The bottle has a "best by" date of 04/15/10 printed on to the bottle and it was sampled on 2/11/10. There appears to be no abv info available on the label. Appearance: Its body is deep amber in color and it shows very good clarity. A quick poor makes for a tall foamy head. It is off white to a very light tan in color and it slowly fades down to very thin filmy covering as I drink. Its lacing is minimal, spotty and slick. Smell: The aroma fairly light with some hints at malt and light leafy hops as well as touch of something with mineral like edge. Taste/Palate: There is mix of pale biscuity, dry white bready and sweet malt as the base flavor note. Hops add there balance of leafy and herbal flavor as well as some bitterness and dryness. The body has a medium feel with good carbonation and an easy drinking light but note too light texture. Notes: Overall I would say that this is your basic/average Irish style Red Ale. It's not bad at all but it doesn't stand out either.

Just in time for St. Paddy's Day... first time this has been offered in my area that I am aware of. Pours a crystal clear amber color with a thick off-white head - nice lacing. A little thinner in the mouth than some other Irish reds, but not quite as sweet as some (a good thing for me). Great flavor with slight hints of caramel and toffee.

A deep crystalline red colored beer. Big, really BIG creamy light tan head rises above and sticks around a long time. When nearly finished, the lacing finelt settles in. It is fluffy clouds. Very weak aromas. Barely detectable malt. The body is light medium. Mederately carbonated. Creamy texture. The tasting is like the nose. Weak appearances of malt. Some grassy hops in the finish. In fact the hops are the most noticeable thing in the flavors and they carry up the rear.

Nice clear medium amber color with nice sustained white head and some nice lacing. Sweet and slightly toasted malts, a bit caramel, and a touch of hops in the aroma. Taste is smooth with a slightly sweet maltiness, some caramel and toffee, and a hint of hops in the end. Nice, easy-drinking Irish Ale which is pretty typical for the style and did not disappoint.

A fairly decent irish red ale, celtic ale pours a amber body, with a decent off white cap that leaves good lace. Aroma of caramel malts, mouthfeel was bit thin and watery. The flavor of carmael malts was the most noticeable with, a few hops and it had a bready aftertaste. Overall it was drinkable and decent enough.

The poured a beautiful dark brown coloring with a slight head...very attractive looking in the glass. There was a slight aroma but nothing overpowering or extra special. I was not overly fond of the taste, though. While not bad, I did find that it had a long lasting bitter flavor. I could taste the hint of caramel and hops.
