Obsidian Stout is as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it gets its name. It’s a deep and satisfying experience, with distinct notes of chocolate, espresso, roasted malt and black barley. It is robust and full, with a big roasted finish. Obsidian, along with Mirror Pond and Black Butte, first set Deschutes on its renegade path of high-risk, high reward brewing. Any tour of great craft beer starts here. Think of Obsidian as the malt yin to Mirror Pond’s hop yang, and the perfect beer to sit, contemplate and linger over. "Black as midnight with a dark head. Deep, black chocolate aroma, wonderfully complex and clean. Hoppy and very bitter in the mouth, a great roasted finish. Sharp and dry. Great balance." World Beer Awards Tasting Notes

Purchased at Albertson in Vegas. Pours a deep brown colour with light ruby highlights. The head is creamy-foamy, beige, long lasting and gives out chunky lace. Sweet dark fruit aromas with the roasted malts and coffee notes. The taste is similar to the nose with some added hops, but mild, that creates a nice light dryness. Kind of the coffee replaced with some grass notes. A pretty good stout overall.

Wow what a splendid beer. Looks just how a stout should. Black with a big creamy head, loads of lacing. Flavour has roasted malt, dark bitter chocolate, sweet coffee, cocoa, smoke and a little bitterness. Medium mouthfeel, smooth and creamy with a bit of chalkiness. Did I say that this was splendid.

Black with big brown lasting, lip sticking, lacing foam head. Coffee aroma, coffee, chocolate and roasted nuts in taste. Wonderful beer, one the better ones these last weeks in US. (Houston 201505)

Pours black crowned with a generous head of dense bubbly creaminess that coats the glass well. The aromas of roasted smoky malts, coffee, caramel, malted milk balls, berries, and hops. The taste is hoppy stout flavor, bittersweet chocolate, char, slight fruity yeast character. The mouthfeel is creamy smooth, finishing a bit dry. Note not much of a stout/coffee drinker.

12 oz bottle, best by 10/13/14. Pours dark brown black with a huge creamy light brown head that retains well and leaves some lacing.
The aroma is dry chalky roast chocolate malts and some grains with a little coffee.
The flavor is burnt roast bitter chocolate malts with some coffee and a little sweetness and a fairly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation and a little watery.
Overall, some sweet chocolate and heavily roasted / burnt chocolate malts with a little coffee and a bitter burnt finish. A little too burnt for me. -

Pours black with a dark tan head which quickly disappears. Coffee, chocolate/cocoa, roasted malt aromas. Coffee and roasted malt dominate the flavors with hints of bittersweet chocolate. Hops lend to a pleasant, bitter finish. A solid stout.

The nose is underwhelming for such a high rated stout, not bad, just weak. Pours kinda dirty, not really black. Ample roast notes in the flavor make it a winner for the style.

Deep brown pour with a thick tan head which leaves quite a bit of lace on the glass. Looks fantastic. Creamy, nutty and chocolate flavor do a nice job of making up for the slightly thin mouthfeel. Enjoyed this beer very much.

On tap @ Deschutes, Portland. Near black dark pour, very tight tan head, some lacing. Near-burnt malt aroma and taste, dark chocolates, dark molasses, earthy hops. Nice and dark, rich and toasty.

Enjoyed a pint of this on nitro over the weekend. Pour is black with a thin creamy tan head. Subtle aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and coffee. Smooth, silky mouthfeel. Flavor matches up well with the aroma. A very well made, complex stout where the focus is on the subtle rather than the bold.
