This dark unfiltered brew is medium-bodied with a deep roasted malt aroma. The molasses and licorice in this brew are authentic to American porters of the colonial era, as is the more assertive hop finish.

this was another solid effort from the Sam Adams historic line of beers that i apparently just liked more than everyone else. stands out from other porters because of the licorice and molasses...i'll buy if they make it again.

To drink this beer, is to experience history. This beer, while it may taste like crud, was what our founding fathers drank. So, I tip my tri corner hat to you Mr. Washington. The aroma was chocolate.

from notes 25Nov2006. Pours a very dark brown with a one finger head that settles slowly to a thin spotty cap, leaving behind a moderate amount of lacing. Smell; very earthy, and almost a little like worcestershire sauce. Surprisingly, there's a little bit of alcohol in the nose as well. Taste; there's a little bit of anise, andchocolate, but then that worcestershire taste ovewhelms whatever other flavors that may be present for me, and I don't like it. I'm lad I only have one bottle of this. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a pretty nice carbonation, and the drinakbility is not so good, since I'll be dumping the rest of this.

This beer poured with a dark brown to black body and was topped off by a small brown head that left very little lace. The Aroma was roasted malt, licorice, and some smoke. This was the lightest body I have ever seen in a porter, a major letdown in that department. The flavor was pretty decent though with some flavors of molasses, chocolate and caramel.

If the best thing about your beer is the appearance, you might have issues. I think that Sam Adams was on to something creating these beers in the Patriot Collection, but I think that it needs a bit more time in the planning stages. A weak aroma of molasses, and licorice. An impressive appearance with a deep dark brown color, nice tannish head with ruby highlights on the edges. A weak showing in the flavors were the most disappointing. Nothing really came out except the sweet malts and molasses, with a very minimal roast character to it. Just a below average porter IMO.

This is a much better beer than that disgusting Root beer. Not really as aggressive as the typical modern porter, but it’s got an easy drinking quality that keeps it kind of nice to drink.

Well, here's the last of the Brewer Patriot Collection four-pack. And, to be honest, I'm not really sorry to see it leave my `fridge. With one of the beers sorta-kinda tasty, one boring as hell, and one way too wintergreen-ishly awful, I had very little enthusiasim about finishing off the set of four with Georgie's Porter. But with the same stoic determination that the original patriots had going up against an army five times their size, I bucked down and gave this one my best shot.
Too bad this beer didn't give me it's own very best shot. Rather, this beer starts out of the gates rather shoddy, and doesn't seem to go through much effort to improve it's station much.
More licorice and mollasses. Didn't Our Founding Fathers have any sort of sense of balance in their respective farmhouse brews? Didn't George leave Martha's side, to step outside his mansion, walk across the yard, and step into his Mt Vernon barn/brewery, and ever taste what he was brewing on his own property? Would the dude who's on both the 25-cent piece and the 1-Dollar bill want to drink this?
I think not.
Fizzy and less turgid than straight mollasses, true, but not by much. Way to thick and languid for my tastes. How about some roastiness with this Porter, eh? Or some basic hops? Said to be made with a bunch of East Kent Goldings, but I sure can't find much in the way of hops. Too much licorice in the way -- yet again.
I do understand that back in the 1700's, hops might have been rather hard to come buy -- even if they grow like a weed in certian parts of the world. And that meant using locally available subsitutes -- i.e. anise, wintergreen, licoririce, etc.
But really? Aside from the semi-dubious historical angle, their's really little here that appeals to me. I have to think that at least some of the founding fathers thought twice about rebelling against England, when it meant having to forego well made Bitters and Milds for the likes of this sort of home-grown sludge....
Music: Mammatus' self-titled debut.

Sampled from bottle. Pours ruby-tinted dark chocolate brown with a creamy tan head and nice lacing. It's clear when backlit. Aroma is rich malts, dark, overripe fruits and vanilla. The flavor is really overpowering. Almost like I took a shot of cocoa powder. Wow. Vinous notes are heavy in this beer's dry finish. After the initial shock wears, the flavor is quite complex and enjoyable. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated. This is the best beer in Sam's Patriot Collection.
