Paddock Wood 606 Pale Ale

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle. Colour – amber pour, slight haze, weak cap that doesn’t lace well. Aroma – Pine, citrus, caramel malts, some earthy notes. Mouthfeel – Medium bodied. Overall – nice malty beer with a decent hop finish. Not as citrus flavoured as the aroma would suggest. A good beer to enjoy an evening with friends.

Had this at the Bier Markt in Queensway.Poured a clear copper colour with a decent sized head and left good lacing. Very similar aroma and flavour. Carmel malt, citrus, pine orange and grapefruit. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Not bad overall

On tap at St.Augustine's, I was hoping it would be similar to Loki, their excellent impy ipa. Alas, it is not. No head, no lacing, basically no fun. Perhaps it should be re-reviewed as an English ipa, and given a little slack, but I wasn't impressed.

This is an India Pale Ale which is darker in color than most pale ales. The color looks like black tea which pours with a malt colored head which disappears fast. The smell is quite fruity which matches the taste. There is also a bitter taste after the swallow. Overall a nice beer for mealtime.

Brown bottle, label as pictured above. New recipe comes in at 5.4% alc. Color is clear, dark amber / orange. Thin white foam that quickly didsappears, no lacing to speak of. Smell of citrus hops and some sweet malt behind. Taste has the biscuity malt and lots of hop flavor. Slightly bitter finish with a smooth aftertaste. Good mouthfeel, seemed to be lots of carbonation. Could easily be a nice sessional, easy drinking. Though not as bad as Keith's IPA, it isn't like the big hop IPAs that seem to be coming out. An all aroung good English style IPA.

Bottle: Poured a clouded deep burnished copper with minimal head but decent lacing qualities. Nose is woody-earthy hops with some light citrus, under rich caramel malts. Profile: Good dose of caramelized Maris otter in the front... toffee-like tastes joined by cedar hops to balance...midway the malts get toasty, the hops get lightly citrus then the finish is dried up a bit as the hops get lightly bitter against the sturdy malt backbone. A decent IPA but not the big Pac NW IPA I expected...if I closed my eyes it could be a double for Heritage’s Sgt. Major.

Poured out a small tan head with some retension on top of a hazy red/orange brew. Aroma is a mix of obvious apricot / orange hops, slight spice and a a malt that probally has some weak biscuit quality. Smells clean. Taste is a little different with the hops not being overpowering and the malts playing more of a role. Sweet, tangy cirtus flavours and the biscuit malt are well blended. Some pine can be tasted. There is an excellent long lasting deep bitterness, not a sharp one. Fairly smooth and creamy with OK carbonation. An interesting twist on the style - I think I will re-review this one due to the hour or so that I left it in the glass. Not sold on this one, but if you want to stay away from an all-hop IPA, this is a good option as you still get a decent dose of bitterness, but, I don't know...it's just different. Appealing? Maybe not as I like my IPA's bitter to the point of pain and overflowing with flavour. I could've rated this a 3.5 or a 2.5....need another one. Probally more malt domination that I had expected.

Body was brown and relatively clear slightly red when held up the light small tan cap with bla retention and lacing, nothing standing out for the look of this brew. Hops are at the front of the aroma as they should be but they’re not as insane as most North American IPA’s go, a smooth maltiness rounds out the smell. I think the main problem I’m having with the aroma of this IPA is that the hops smell more sweet and candy like then cirusy. Taste is all sweet hops a touch of coffee and some darker tasting malts, there is a slight citrus taste in the finish. This IPA was drinkable it didn’t taste bad but I can think of many many others I would grab before I grab this one again. Review done while watching Night at the museum.
