This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer's statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Opaque orange off white lacing foam. Good bitter aroma and likewise taste, nothing else there, some floral notes. Nice lasting aftertaste. (Houston 201408)

Modest nose, some fruity notes within the malt; peach pie? Short lived head leaves good lace which sits atop a medium amber body. Mouth is medium with good carbonation level. Nicely bitter with some pine and some fresh fruity notes and good malt backbone.

Looks good to start but the head dissipates quickly to leave just a skim. Not much lacing but beer slides down the inside of the glass. Has a full slick mouthfeel. Strong aroma of pine and grapefruit. Flavour is much the same as the nose with some background malt sweetness and a touch floral. Very drinkable IPA. Deserves it's high ranking.

This brew gets a lot of hype, and just recently seen it distributed here in FL. I thought it would be a possible top 10 for me in this syle, but don't think it makes that cut. A solid all-around IPA, which leans heavily towards the hop side. Not much malt here though. I prefer somewhat more balanced. If you are looking for a quality hop-bomb, this is it!

Comes out of the bottle a slightly hazy golden amber with a good off-white head. Aroma is VERY hoppy with a fruity undertone - gets them salivary glads a-workin’! Flavor is seriously hoppy and woody, with a fruity undertone that is mainly apple and pear with a touch of banana. I get a hint of - could that be caramel? Texture is good and firm, with plenty of fizz.

When I saw WOB was offering Bear Republic I couldn't get over there fast enough. My first was the IPA. Bold Orange colored with big sudsy white head. Great hang time. Settles eventually into a thick ringlet. Bold profile of sweet caramel background holding up an in your face citric....grapefruit hoppy presence. Nice bodied, refreshing beer.

A fantastic IPA. Cloudy orange/copper pour with a thick white head. Hop aroma shines with a bit of sweetness in there. Flavor is grapefruit, toasted malts, and kind of a woody taste. Very drinkable!! Excellent balance in this beer, will continue to purchase this one.

A perfect ipa. grapefruit, sweet malt, some lacing, reminds me of two hearted only more grapefruity, in fact reminds me of red grapefruit. Don't know why its called racer 5, every time I see the label though I get that Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Gooooooo! song going through my head, and now you have it there too. Oh and I keep wanting to call it Racer X beer, but perhaps that is there Dark IPA version of this beer,,,,someday....maybe....

This a great IPA. Lively and bright, light in colour but rich enough in malt. Has all the wonderful grapefruit hoppiness it is supposed to but its a little too fizzy and pale for me - like they tried to adjust the acidity and pH and put a dash too much gypsum or something. Nice to have a pro bottle conditioned ale though - even has hop pellet debris! Good brew!

I'm almost getting bored with the west coast IPA. Almost. And it's because of IPAs like this. Not original in the hops used, but surprising in the hop flavour. Columbus as an aroma hop? Who knew? Pretty straightforward in the flavour department, not too complex, but has a great personality. Goes down way too easy, considering it's practially an impy IPA. Racer 5, I'm glad we met, but I'm sad you had to go so soon.
