Scythe and Sickle is Ommegang’s foray into honoring the harvest season. Using barley, oats, wheat, and rye, we’ve brought the mood of fall to life with vibrant and flavorful passion. Farming is about precision, timing and care. At Ommegang we place the same emphasis a farmer has for his crops into the creation of our beers. Scythe and Sickle is a testament to the craft and care of farming, from which our farmstead-brewed beers benefit greatly. Brewed with balance in mind, Scythe & Sickle reveals a smooth and creamy mouthfeel with light toastiness and gentle sweetness. Bright amber in color from the mixed malts, the beer is balanced with delicate hopping to counter rather than overpower the malt profile.

Bottle. Murky, clouded amber with a tall, fading tan head. Aroma is sweet malt, light hops, yeast and grains. Taste is malty and sweet with grains, light hops, dried fruit notes, spicy rye and yeast. Body is medium with a dense, creamy carbonation on the palate. Ends with more sweet malt, grains, light caramel, light hops, fruit notes and yeast.

I had this at Beamer's in Roanoke, VA. This beer was a pretty good beer, but I didn't think it was an Amber, per se. It was more of a Belgian triple style. It was yeasty and grainy, a bit peppery.

Huh...not amber in the American sense, definitely Belgian. Lots of grainy nuances in the nose and flavor. Rye stands out, as does the wheat. A mellow treat. Bubbly yet creamy.

a cloudy medium amber with a huge white pillow of a head. Very lively pour due to the bottle conditioning. The aroma is of rich malt and spices dominate with hints of yeast. The taste is subtle, maybe even subdued. All the flavors from the aroma are there but muted. A little bitterness from the hops engages on the finish. The mouth feel is just right, not too heavy, but not too thin either.

Pours amber-orange with a lovely frothy head. Aroma is soft, doughy malt and flowery hops, mild toasted caramel, and earth. Flavor is dry, earthy, malty, almost nutty...apple, citrus peel, and light herbal characteristics. Medium-plus bodied, drying, and crisp.

Pours a semi-cloudy darker amber with a massive 4 finger head that takes its time. The bubbles in the head are massive and seem to generate with the massive carbonation in the glass. Aroma is light and has hints of spices and cloves. Taste is surprisingly light with hints of rye, spices, and a bit of cloves. Lightly bittered and smooth. Actually not half bad.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy orange amber with a monstrous rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is subdued - grainy malts and a little fruit with some floral perfumey hops.
The flavor is sweet grainy malts, a little fruit and a little rye with a medium bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, it's a decent amber but a bit uninteresting and pricey at $11 per 4 pack. -

A murky orange-brown colored beer with a big, thick frothy textured, white head rising robustly above. Excellant hang time on the head. Settles eventually into thick bilmous film and ringlet. Sweet malty nose. Multigrain smooth sweetness. Refreshing. Well done

Sampled on 10/13/2012 at GABF. This specialty grain beer pours a light gold color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, estery and yeasty. A medium bodied multi-grain beer. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are herbal. Decent carbonation. Interesting but seems a little bland. Will have to try again in a less busy setting. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Covers a broad spectrum of brewing grains, and does it almost magically. Dry, spicy, malty and pleasing all at once. Orange~amber in color with a nice foamy head and long strands of lacing. Medium to light bodied, all malt and satisfying. Liquid bread, with some minor fruity notes throughout. Well executed.
