Thanks to thomassova for hooking me up with this one. This brew far exceeded my expectation since it was one that I wasn't familiar with. I'm not going to waste time telling you how it looked, smelled and tasted, as 9 other people already have. I'll leave it at this.... it was an awesome beer, and definitely worth tracking down

2008 vintage pours like liquid fudge brownie with mahogany edges and mocha head. Swirling it up seems to stain the glass some. The aroma has dark roasted malts, chocolate fudgy brownies, vanilla, caramel covered oak and the some bourbony whisky booze at the end of the draw. It has a smooth rich punctuating aroma. The taste is just as smooth and rich as the aroma with bold notes of dark chocolate, caramel, molasses, dark roasted malts and then rolls smoothly into an even mix of vanilla, aged oak and bourbony like booze.

This is an over rated beer in my opinion. I had this several times in Russia before moving to NYC. A very black beer, but the aroma and flavour are none too pleasing to this tongue.

First and foremost, a HUGE thank you to Pat (a.k.a Oh6gdx) for this beer. He is a generous and kind guy for hooking me up with this beer and its younger brother - the normal Stormaktsporter. I am eternally grateful. As for the review - this beer is fantastic, maybe THE best beer I have ever had! The bottle was a 2006 and it was simply amazing. The lacing, the mouthfeel, the aroma - all spot on! The flavor - simply too complex to describe. Mainly chocolate and rich malty elements blended perfectly. The beer received a perfect score, however, I had the normal Stormaktsporter side-by-side with it, and in my book, the Kaggen! is better by a hair. The alcohol is supremely hidden! There are no traces of heat and you would never believe this beer is cask aged. I will likely never have the chance to have this beer again and I am glad I was able to experience it and share it with my best friend - thanks to MdSmith for sharing this gem with me before moving from Perry Hall - it was a great night hanging out with my best bud! (Btw, MdSmith liked the Stomaktsporter better than the Kaggen!)

This was received in early 2009 from a Swedish colleague. As black as black can be with a huge nose of smokey wood, roasted malt, coffee, and rye. The flavour was out of this world, very full of roasted malt, dark fruits, rye and vanilla hints. Possibly the greatest beer I've ever had!

Tasted at the February Northern California Beer Tasting. This Imperial Stout pours an eclipse black color from the bottle. Small to medium sized foamy tan head. The aroma is chocolate and toffee, dark fruit, chocolate, oak and licorice. A very full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate and toffee, dark fruit, licorice, oak and some bourbon. The hops are earthy. An incredibly full mouthfeel, a real tongue coater. Lots of chocolate and coffee flavors as wellas some dark fruit and vanilla. Nice balance. Good beer. Mouthfeel is very full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

NorCal Feb '08 - Thank you Phil_L for bringing this beauty. I can't say I haven't been itching to try this beer for awhile now. It really was worth the wait, but there was so damned little of it that licking the glass was the only option after it was gone.
The beer pours out a thick, viscuous liquid, almostly looking like the consistancy of flowing blood it was that thick. A creamy one finger thick brown head which stayed the entire length of my enjoyment. Aroma...where to start. Dark chocolate, bourbon, soy sauce, alcohol, nougat, licorice, dark fruit, espresso beans, and lightly smokey somehow. Mouthfeel is monstrously huge. Coating your entire mouth would do it right. Flavors had nearly the same character as the aroma with a finish that was long and intense. The next time I have this beer I will worry less about deconstructing it and more about enjoying it. -

Bottle, RBESG 2007 in Glasgow, Grand Tasting. Pitch black colour, creamy brown head. Very nice aroma of chocolate and roasted malts, hints of oak. Intensely rich and complex flavour: oaky, vinous, roasty, chocolate, liquorice. An excellent beer, but so is the "ordinary" Stormaktsporter.

This is one amazing beer
Aroma: The aroma is similar to many Imperial stouts with roasted malts, coffee flavour, and in this case some licorice comes through along with the wood
Appearance: Jet black with a thick creamy medium brown head
Mouthfeel: This is a full-bodied brew with a thick, creamy mouthfeel that harnesses your taste buds and sets them up for a great ride
Flavour: Heaven on the tongue. The complexities associated with the flavour of this beer could run ages. Every mouthful provides something different. Sadly, the bottle I had was 250ml, and there is a need for more.. Some of the flavours are licorice, prunes, coffee, plums, and malt.
Overall: A truly great beer experience which everybody must try -

Oh my. If the Stormaktsporter was fabulous so is this. Pitch black colour and nice brown head, which leaves a bit lace. Aroma is so full of everything, roast, plum, raisins, licorace, some coffee and caramel. Also dark fruits. Flavour contains the same, and along to that a nice touch of wet burnt oak. This is totally awesome in any way. Still, I won’t give a 5.0, since I might find some better beer, but this is among the best there is! I could kill to get more of this!
