Banana beer is the traditional beer of the Massai in Kenia and Tanzania. This banana beer contains the OK bananas as the most important ingredient and was therefore given the Max Havelaar and fair trade label. The beer is called "mbege" in Africa. It has the yellow colour of ripe bananas. It clearly tastes like bananas and in the palate the beer is transported back to the taste buds.

Opaque lighter yellow with deminishing white foam head, lacing to glass. Aroma and taste are banana dominated (duhh), but still quite nice. Perfect with Belgian waffle. Aftertaste is lasting sweet banana. (Velp 201306)

Very strong banana aroma, not very much beerlike. Well, I wouldn't call this a beer anyway, but it's quite interesting. In taste dominates sweetness and banana.Color is pale yellow and there's not much foam.

Bottled. Yellow colour, no head. Aroma is banana. Flavour is very sugary banana. Almost like having a bananasplit... The first mouthful was the best, after that it just went bad.

330 ml bottle, now available in Norway (ULTRA stores a.o.). ABV here is 4.5%. Hazy golden colour, moderate creamy head. INTENSE aroma of "banana split" toffees, pleasant at first whiff, then VERY unpleasant sidenotes of vomit and chemical waste take over. Sickly sweet artificial (allegedly NATURAL, "fair trade" even - good grief!) over-ripe / rottening banana flavouring. A truly disgusting beer! It was expensive, so I forced myself to finish the glass. Urk! Blah! etc. Been there, done that. Never, never again!

Pale gold colour, with excessive carbonation. Beer not too bright. Sweet banana aroma with nice full mouthfeel for abv. Aftertaste was interesting - some slight sourness as with other Belgian Fruitbeers then long afterwards, back to bl00dy bananas

Such a bit hit of bananas with this. So strong aroma and flavor of bananas. Was really sweet due to bananas, was quite fizzy in mouth which was really nice. Was quite 'nice', definately couldnt have more than 1 or 2 at a time, but then im not a huge banana fan.

Pale gold colour with a slim white head. Smells like banana syrup. Tastes like banana syrup and candy. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Sweet aftertaste. Not beer.

I have been informed that the banana aroma is not artificial. This is made from a real extract of bananas from Ghana. But this remains undrinkable ...
pale yellow colour, no head, very very deep artificial banana aroma, incredibly sweet, endless banana aftertaste ... banana ... banana ... not drinkable ! I will give it to my children ... And this is supposed to be a traditional african beer ? Poor africans ...

Mongozo Banana - exotic beer based on the original recipe. It's banana alright, if you are expecting a strong beer flavor with a hint of fruit forget it. Pours a yellow gold color (not really the 'yellow color of ripe bananas' described on the website - www.mongozo.org). Small foam with little carbonation. It is all banana - strong sweet aroma, and full on banana taste. Syrupy, but not as artificial tasting as I might have thought. Very unique product, so got a bit higher rating than other fruit beers. Dessert beer, over ice cream, etc. would be great. A bit pricey, but worth a try.
