This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Very creamy head. Dark as sin colorwise. Very pungent aroma of chocolate and roasted malts. Wonderful flavor. Not extremely bitter with lots of sweetness from the lactose addition. Smooth going down the palate. I have to confess that this is one of my favorite styles of stout and this is definately one of the better milk stouts I’ve had. I had it a LONG time ago, but haven’t seen it around the SF Bay Area for quite some time. Would buy this again and again if it was readily available.

On Nitro at GABF 2013
Aroma is roasty and smokey. Flavor is the same, roasted malts and mild smokiness

Pours deep amber with tan head. The aroma has the roasted, sweet molasses and coffee of a similar stout but also that glass of milk smell of the milk stout. The flavor hunts you down from both the sweet molasses and toffee notes to the deep roasted to burnt malts. The palate seems a bit on the thin side. Somewhere hidden in the aftertaste I sense a lactose-ness that swirls around briefly. There are some hops in there too but I’m struggling to make them out.

Ok, I’ve had enough milk stouts now to know it is one of my more favored styles. Pop the lid on this 12 oz brown bottle and you get than old musty aroma. In the background you can smell some roast hints in there. Rootbeery and choclatey is hiding in the background olfactory. The pour is dark and opaque, very nice representation of a dark beer. Tan off-white head is a girdle around the top of the brew against the inside of the glass. The taste is perhaps a bit more bitter than I prefer for this sweet style. Mild medium burnt bitter appears to attract the back of my throat. You can taste the influence of milk in there. Enjoyable as a dark beer but perhaps to intense to be repeatable as a session. Some milk stouts I have tasted are mild enough to be thought of as a session. Cannot measure up to sammy smiths oatmeal or Mackeson xxx. Even tho Bell’s Cherry stout is not considered a fruit beer, this is slightly better than that. Overall, OK for a sweet stout but could be a little more mannered, the +5% alky shows thru too much. Expected something a little bit different than this, do they make a Baltic stout?

35,5cl bottle at Parkteatret, Oslo. Pours very dark brown with a lasting beige head. Moderate roasty aroma with notes of milk chocolate, caramel and hints of hops. Medium sweet with mild roasty flavours and a fairly balanced bitterness. Tasty and enjoyable.

Bottle: Poured a black with brown head. Aroma reminded me of chocolate milk. Taste is sweet milk mixed coffee and roasted malts.

Part of a pick your own 6 pack at the local grocery store. Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt on the nose. Tastes as it smells, with the chocolate and coffee leading the way. A bit thin for a stout. Nothing really stands out about this beer. Not bad, but IMO a slightly above average milk stout.

Had this one in Vegas thanks to David. Pours a very dark brown colour with a mocha head, average retention and minimal lacing. Roasted malt with grain notes and hints of coffee, hops. The taste is sweet with some soft roasted malt chocolate, milder hops, but creating a little bitterness. The mouthfeel is smooth. A decent milk stout with a little more hop than usual for this style.

Very smooth drinking and tasty milk stout. Not as sweet as some and that’s a good thing. Chocolate and cocoa aroma. Taste follows the aroma and has a mild roastiness and a little lactose sweetness. Thin/medium creamy mouthfeel. Enjoyed very much but would have liked to see more head and lacing.

This was a surprise because I didn't care much for the Nitro by Left Hand. This is a thick black stout that pours no head.the aroma is of malt and oak. The taste is a smooth black milkshake.
