This year’s winner of our American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned homebrewing competition, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional palate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the south, as our callaborators from Baja California, Cervezería Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue-ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking, but thriving at an all-time high.

Rated in Oct. 2014. 22oz bomber pours with a nice looking deep dark body that supports a fairly tight mocha colored head. The aroma is bursting with chocolate and booze with bits of blueberry and black licorice and chili pepper meat off in the background. The taste is similar with big chocolate and spicy black licorice notes that are quickly joined by nearly bold chili pepper meat. It just gets more velvety and chocolate like into the finish with modest levels of chili pepper meat and a just noticeable heat component. Nice stuff. No Hunahpu for sure but still plenty tasty.

Sampled during the Superbowl, so things always seem better then. A little on the sweeter side. Too much vanilla and spices, but has potential if toned down a bit. Has some heat to it, but on the mild side. Reminds me of Due South's Mexican Standoff Porter (nearly identical ABV%), but not as hot. Worth the try.

Pours a sublimely tempting coffee sable with a thick and frothy tan head. Rich aroma has notes of coffee, peppers, and chocolate plus hints of spice and caramel. Flavor is a little peppery, but far from unbearable (at least it’s not like Crime, which made my mouth feel like a set from Backdraft!). Chocolate, earthy, nutmeg, caramel, and quality coffee notes come through as well. Smooth, creamy texture has some good fizz and leaves an earthy, mildly peppery finish. I’m glad that I got a growler, as I really enjoy drinking this!

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy light tan head that retains well and leaves some lacing.
The aroma is rich chocolate with some spicy cinnamon.
The flavor is sweet chocolate, a lot of roast, coffee, and cinnamon and spicy chile peppers and a slightly chalky roast coffee finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, a nicely balanced spicy chocolate coffee stout. A Mexican mocha with a kick. -

This is really good stuff (provided you like the ingredients in there). Cinnamon up front, cocoa and vanilla next, chili, nutmeg and coffee a little more in the background. Nose and flavor are nearly identical. Super smooth, enjoyable and easy to drink despite the complexity and strength. Not a letdown.
