Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

This one was a gift. The giver apparently was pleased. A cloudy straw body with a thin rapidly siddipating head. To the nose and palate I wonder, where's the hops? I get sweet spices and not much else.

Pours thin, mostly clear, small head, light bodied. A sweet sweaty smell. Its hard to get used to the balance at first w/o hops but i like the herbal showcase. Heathery herbs, clover, fragrant sappy....fruity pears, apricot dried, old lemon. Sweetish, green tea like with a honey kick. Very fine bubbles, feels thin in the finish.... Different 'beer', or gruit, but didnt really turn me on

This ale pours a slightly cloudy orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is fruit (pears and peaches) and spices (coriander and pepper). A light bodied ale. Malts are very fruity and sweet. Not hoppy since it’s a gruit. Lots of spices balance this ale out, coriander, pepper and ginger. It’s a touch floral and earthy as well. Light tasting, it’s very wit like, but there is a lot of flavors; some tea, fruit sweetness and spices compare and contrast in this beer. Interesting, but I am not sure I would want to drink this one a lot. Well worth trying though. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

The aroma is spicey, hot with a little sweet cherry. Appearance is light brown with no lees or carbonation. The mouthfeel is a tad watery. The flavor is complex and changes from the presentation to the aftertaste. I feel that the spices may have been overdone.

Orange golden colour, small white head. Aroma is strong fruit, earth and ashes in aroma. Some herbs and spices also noteable. Flavour is glueish fruits along with spices and herbs. A very different beer, surprising flavours. Refreshing and interesting, but flavourwise I didn't like it too much.

Well, admittedly this is the first time I've had a gruit beer or something close to this. I did find it enjoyable, althought different. Isn't that what we all look for in our seach for beer? An aroma of fresh flowers and burnt candle wax. A taste of ginger, herbs, apples and some other things I just couldn't place no matter how hard I tried with a funny watery mouthfeel. This was really different. Good, but different.

very intriguing style and beer altogether. tasted of ginger water, well water, pices like nutmeg and allspice. some honey and wheat flavors with a bitter taste and some acidity.

This was pale, pale cloudy yellow like a Hoegaarden and it had a lot of similar qualities. It's extremely light and I seemed to pick up coriander and probably some orange, but there was some vague herbally aromas and flavors that I couldn't pick up well enough to describe that made this different than just another wit. Interesting, but not amazing.

This is a Dutch "gruitbier". A gruit is a mixture of spices and herbs and is used in place of hops to add flavor and aroma. I guess that technically it's not even a beer since by definition a beer contains hops, but I wouldn't have detected their absence if the label hadn't told me. It's pretty tasty...like a spiced wheat beer. It's not bad, but the fact that this very old style of brewing is all but forgotten says something.
