San Diego homebrewing duo Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard submitted their Cherry Chocolate Stout for this year’s Stone March Madness Homebrew Competition and AHA Rally, taking top honors out of 40 entries that were judged. As a result, they earned the opportunity to make a dramatically scaled up version with Brewmaster Mitch Steele on the 120-barrel Stone Brewing Co. system.Once the beer was decided on, an additional brewer had to be selected to complete the collaboration. Deciding to bring in John Trogner, Head Brewer of Pennsylvania’s famed Tröegs Brewing Co.

Pours a thick head color of light brown sugar. What little aroma there is is of roasted chocolate malt. Body is deep dark brown, nearly black. Flavors of licorice and brown sugar. Fair amount of bitterness going down. Some cherry picked up in the finish. Honestly, not as much as I’d expect considering it comes first in the name. A bit of warming after a minute.

Small light tan head thats short lived. Some stringy, spotty lace left behind.Yup, its black. Light cherry aroma, cola, phenols and light roast. Body is medium, oily on the palate with a soft carbonation. Strange cherry, chocolate, plasticy flavors. Not sure? Bit medicinal, overly sweet, nutty, weird and not good. Was lookin forward to this one, sounded good! But it aint workin for me. Bottle from statelineliquors. erf.

Rated in Oct. 2011. 12oz bottle pours deep dark mahogany with nice mocha head. The aroma offers up a mix of thick cherry juice, chocolate brownie, some dark roasted coffee and spicy black licorice. The taste is similar. It flirts with chocolate and chocolate brownie as cherry juice rimmed with a mild level of cherry tartness comes to the surface every now and then. Around the cherry and roasty chocolate notes I get black licorice joining in creating a bit of a spicy fruit cake sensation. It leaves a pleasing chocolate note behind in the after taste with slightly tart cherry juice around the edges of the palate. I’m enjoying this very much but it does seem to be pulling itself in several different directions.

A super dark stout with a dizzy head. Aroma is fairly sour, hints of cherries and chocolate as the name implies. Flavor is more cocoa nib than chocolate, sour cherries, earth, and a dry bitterness. Unique beer.

12oz bottle. Pours dark opaque black with a medium creamy brown head that retains well and laces the glass some.
The aroma is roasted lactic chocolate malts, sweet vanilla and a touch of fruit.
The flavor is heavily roasted malts with some sweet chocolate and lots of sweet vanilla and some subtle cherry. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, it has a bit too much sweet vanilla for me. Otherwise it's very nice. I like the roast, chocolate and the subtle cherry. -

Sampled from bottle as part of an epic trade with slowrunner. This stout pours a thick-looking black with small, creamy head; beautiful lacing. The aroma balances roasty coffee and chocolate against sweet cherry topnotes. Instead of sweetness, the cherries add a distinct tartness to the flavor. The chocolate plays a central role as well in the flavor and body. Full bodied, but not overly heavy, smooth. Successful collaboration.

Somewhat let down by this beer as I was expecting much, much more. Good initial pour, but the head soon becomes non-existent along with no lacing. Overdone on the black patent malt thus producing a slight metallic twang. A nice effect from the sweet cherries and milk chocolate. Lightly roasted with a trace of vanilla and burnt toast. Lighter in body than I prefer for a stout. Truth of the matter is that this is a slightly above average stout.

I am in heaven! What a great beer! Rich black color with big creamy textured, brown head rising robustly above. Good hang time. Settles into a thin ringlet with light sedimentary film aside the glass. The body is full and creamy. The nose is roasty and bitter chocolate. The tasting more of that with sweet cherries popping on the palate. Love this one!
