This complex, yet drinkable beer is a blend of pale ale and stout. The aroma is a combination of hop from the pale ale with roasted notes and just a hint of smoke from the stout. The rounded body of the beer starts with sweetness from the caramel malt in the pale ale and finishes with aggressive roasted fullness of the stout. The finish is crisp and bitter, but with no astringency. This perfectly blended beer is the marriage of two excellent individual beers coming together to make one phenomenal brew.

Pours a slightly hazy sepia with a very thick, if none too persistent, fluffy light tan head. Aroma has hints of coffee and roast malt and just a whisper of caramel. Flavor has a malty core with notes of woody hops and smoke and a hint of coffee. Texture is firm, smooth and a little edgy, leaving a roast malt and rather hoppy finish that is only slightly bitter. Decent, if not Harpoon's best.

These 100 barrel series have been hit or miss for me. This one worked. I was afraid it would be one of those black-IPA type beers, but the pale ale cut down on the hops, so the malt stood out more. Mix of chocolate, coffee, and caramel flavors but blended and balanced nice with a lighter ale. Wouldn't go out of my way for this again, but something I would sample again for sure.

Black body, amber tinges looking through the light. Thin fizzy cap that faded quickly, leaving no lace. Aromas lean towards the stout with roasted malts, a mix of coffee and caramel, smoke is noticeable at first. The hops are present, but faint. Flavor is much the same as the aroma with the stout characteristics taking charge, the alcohol is noticeable, especially for a 6.25 or 6.3 (depends on you trust the web site or thier bottle). Overall anot a bad brew, A black IPA, but with less hops and more malts.
