Hoss is based on the Marzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with hints of cherry and dark fruits, dominate, while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

The bottle I got foamed like everything when I opened it - so have a towel handy! Aside from that, it pours a nice, appetizing brownish copper with a fairly thick, if not persistent, light tan head. Aroma is fruity and rye-ish, not strong but still appealing. Flavor is like a good rye bread with a fruity undertone, mainly apple and pear, with a hint of hops. Texture is smooth and fizzy, leaving a subtle tingle and a hint of rye.

Nice amber/orange color with some burnt yellow highlights at the bottom and sides. An off white head, about 1 1/2 finger thick, that didn't maintain the retention I was hoping for. A bit of lacing left on the glass. Enough for me to enjoy I guess. I detect a sweetness at first with the aroma. Some fruitiness that smells of cherries and grapes. Also detecting a slightly sour note. Picking up the rye bread also. Some buttery notes and some caramel sweetness. A bit toasty also. The taste presented some dark fruit with some biscuit/bready flavors. A wee bit of bitterness and some sweetness again from the caramel type flavors. The mouthfeel was medium to medium/thin, which was surprising to me. At 6.2% I was expecting something a bit thicker. Didn't really coat the palate as much as I was anticipating either. It's mostly smooth. Rather crisp and somewhat refreshing. Maybe even a bit watery as it warms. All in all this beer isn't bad. Pretty solid really. Worth a try if nothing else catches your eye. It's fairly easy to drink, but not quite sessionable. This beer seems like a Fall seasonal to me.

Apr. 2010 - Amber pour with smallish white head and nice lacing. Funky lager smell of toasted malts. Malty with toast/bread character and yes, some cherries. Finish is crisp and refreshing. This is good stuff, even if I can’t really taste any rye at all (which is why I bought it in the first place).

Sampled on 9/12/2010. This marzen pours a medium orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, bready, and spicy with a touch of orange. A medium bodied Oktoberfest/Marzen. The malts are caramel, bready, rye spicy and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice carbonation. Good balance. The rye adds some spiciness and cuts some of the malt sweetness. I like the idea. Very drinkable, might work as a good session beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly spicy.

Nice reddish copper body ok head with some lace. Aromas and flavors of mostly caramel with hints of cherry, wheat, and cinnamon. Didnt find the rye though, overall a nice enough marzen, its worth a try.

Hoss pours a burnt-orange/amber color with 1/4-inch thick light-tan head and copious lace. A malty and bready aroma dominates, with oranges, cherry, and mild spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth, silky, and rich. Flavors of rye, hops, orange, cherry, breadiness, and mildly spicy. Excellent - another strong showing for Great Divide.

Sampled from bottle. Pours dark copper with a scattered off-white head and ample lacing. Sweet, toasted malt aroma with some spice notes. Balanced and quite bready with the spicy/peppery flavor that one would expect with rye beers. Medium-bodied and smooth. Very easy to drink and an enjoyable beer. Thanks, HAC.

An orange tinged copper colored beer. Moderate creamy textured off white head rises above. Not much hang time, though. Lacing is basically a light cap and ringlet. The fruitiness of the rye rides well in the nose with sweet caramel. The body is light to medium. Well carbonated and creamy. Nice sweet beer.

as a rye beer, this is quite good, although the rye is subdued. but, classified as a marzen, it's epic. i don't get the low balls. it's rich in both flavor, aroma, and body for the style, with a dry earthy rye finish that adds another layer to a pretty straight forward variety. super super high drinkability with the touch of rye atop a toasted malt profile. very nice, and better than i expected!

Pours out in a clear deep reddish amber colour, topped with a rich creamy white foam. Solid malty aroma of burnt caramel, dark bread, rye, figs and mild spices with a whiff of fresh noble hops. Medium-bodied with malty rounded and rather chewy notes of fudge, dark caramel, spiced dark bread, prunes and rye. Rather chewy mouthfeel the considering the low ABV. LOng malty finish of fudge, caramel, dark bread, mild spices and prunes. Quite impressive! One of the better US Märzen I’ve sampled to date but, yeah, this contains some rye....
