Our first lager offering in the Woodcut series, Woodcut No. 4 Oak Aged Lager provides an exceptional “base” for showcasing the importance of hand selected, hand coopered, medium toast, American virgin oak barrels. By choosing a double Marzen style lager, our brewers were able to design a beer that showcases the caramel malty characters of a Marzen along with the clean warming alcohol character only an 11% lager can provide. The nose of this beer is rich in complexity, providing pineapple, dried apricot, raisin and a pleasantly soft muskiness. Toasted oak overtones balance these aromas with a light cedar quality. As the warming alcohol coats the palate a soft vanilla lingers on the tongue imparted by the medium toast virgin oak.

Sampled at GABF on 9/16/2010. This American Strong Ale pours a medium brown color from a 750mle bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet, with a touch of wood. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet, with some nice wood notes. The hops are herbal and earthy. Kind of sweet. Nice carbonation. Hints of wood, vanilla, and bourbon. Very smooth tasting. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

750 ml bottle. Bottled May 2010 - bottle number 1617. Pours a hazy tea brown with a monstrous creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is caramel malts, vanilla, wood, some spices and dark fruit and alcohol.
The flavor is caramel malts and vanilla, with some fruits and a spicy cinnamon alcohol finish with a little bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with lowish carbonation.
Overall, it's a little hot and a bit on the sweet side, but I liked it. -

Pours a orangish-copper with a one-finger tan head. Nose is apricots, raisins, oak and vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium, creamy and smooth. Taste is wonderfully complex - darks fruits, almonds with the whiskey and oak along with some sweet malt and vanilla in the back. Finish is crisp with some mild and pleasant warming. Nicely balanced and such interesting flavors...this would be a near perfect fall treat, although it was pretty wonderful in June. At 11% you must be careful, but with the taste of this, you won't want to be!
