This beer pours with a huge dark head that lasted and left subtle lacing. The appearance was almost black. The aroma was of coffee and licorice as was the flavor throughout. There were some hints of chocolate in the middle. The mouthfeel was somewhat acidic. It finished with a sweet maltiness.

12 oz brown twist off bottle from Vintage Estate for $1.50. Even before I open it I’m thinken this stuff has some good competition. Also, Goose Island really makes a lot of beers! Chicago must be full of beer drinkers. This is my first goose. Twist off the cap and you get roast chocolate smells. It’s like very desirable sweet chocolate milk. The look is dark brownish black but I do see some rootbeerish colored hints around the edge of the glass. Not truly opaque. There is no head but I do see a couple of fine bubbles gathering on the top, this is even less than a tea froth. Taste comes on like a burned piece of wood in the back of your throat but it is not overwhelmingly bitter like an imp stout. Nice taste and texture that is chewy to an extent. Roasty milky texture. Very little carbonation but I do detect a slight tingle when I press the liquid between the tongue and the roof of my mouth. Overall, I really like this beer and this style, one of my favorites. Not quite as good as Mackeson xxx because it lacks that thickness. Almost as chocolately smelling as Wild Goose. As a matter of record, I almost didn’t buy this because I got it confused with Wild Goose. Not quite as smooth as Sammy Smith’s stuff. Much more enjoyable than Bell’s cherry but here again I think the Bell’s cherry should be under the fruit beer style. The finish of this brew is rasty and smooth, no offensive bitterness on the back of your throat. An easy to enjoy brew that is a good representation of this style. Likeable and friendly.

Beautiful dark pour with a thick, foamy head. Very rounded in color, with a deep dark color. Love the malty fullness of this stout, has a lot of caramel and chocolate notes.

Big black-brown pour with a big tannish head and lots of tight lacing. Sweet aromas up front of toasted malts, brown sugar, molasses. Taste is creamy and smooth with a caramel sweetness from the malts and a touch of cocoa with little hops finish.

Poured a dark brown to black with a tan head that quickly dissapated. There was minimal lacing, less than expected for a stout. The aroma was very nice, toasted malts and chocolate. The mouthfeel was a little thin and the flavor was a pretty good mixture of the toasted malt and chocolate with some bitterness.

Pours black with a small tan head which quickly dissipates. Chocolate and coffee with a touch of burnt wood on the nose. Coffee and chocolate up front with roasted malt contributing to a long lingering bitter finish. A bit thin for a stout and certainly a session beer at 5% abv. I refer this beer as their their "pedestrian stout". If you like this try Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout and The Nightstalker, both big abv beers.

Pours out in an almost black colour with a small tan-coloured foam. Rather clean aroma of roasted malts, cocoa and coffee. Medium-bodied with clean notes of dark coffee, cocoa, roasted malts and sweet licorice with grassy undertones. Medium-bitter dryish finish of dark chocolate, coffee and toasted malts.

Pours black with a ruby highlight. 1" tan head quickly fades to surface foam, moderate lacing. Nose is sweet, toasty, chocolate and coffee, in that order. Oatmeal is evident in the taste, very sweet, very smooth, with just a little tang for balance. Substantial mouthfeel, medium body, very creamy going down the hatch. Finishes like it starts, a pleasantly sweet aftertaste. Overall, a very drinkable sweet stout. Just as I'd expect from Goose Island, a fine example of the style, not spectacular, but very solid, indeed.

A dark black pour with a tan thick head. Aroma of chocolate and oats. Bitter flavor of coffee and chocolate. I really enjoyed this beer and will have it regularly on hand.

Pleasently suprised by this one. This beer poured with a nice deep, dark black body topped off by a creamy light tan colored head that left thin lace. Aroma was sweet toasted malts and light chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, rich and very creamy. The flavor was roasted malts, milky chocolate, smoke and oatmeal.
