Flying Monkeys Amber Ale is a re-visioning of a beer we've loved watching grow and mature with our little company. This perky ale was conceived back in the garage brewery of our Founder, Peter. It was nurtured over the years, but then we got bored and late-hopped the heck out of it. When in doubt -throw in more hops, right? And now...(sniff) our little ale is growing up. We're so proud. The Style: An Untraditionally Late-Hopped Traditional Ale Flying Monkeys Amber Ale is a medium bodied ale recently overhauled by the monkeys. With more hop bombast, the perfect amber patina, and toasty malt sweetness, this amber is as close to style as we get. This Amber Pours: Pours a brilliant amber gold color with hints of sepia topped with a fine blanket of ecru, meringue-like foam. Initial aromas of toasted grain, custards, and dried fruits mesh and follow through to a resiny and floral fade characteristic of the Czech Saaz hop we late-dose it with. It's a damn fine brew. It Tastes: In a word –yummo. And, yes, that's a perfectly valid word. We plan to trademark it (but you can use it for free). To expand on yummo, our Amber Ale has a nutty sweetness with a drier grassy, slightly peppery finish. It's a mellow ale, finely wrought and tastefully seamless. Or just yummo. The Recipe of Yummo: Malts: 1. Briess Crystal 60 2. Roasted Barley 3. 2-Row N. American Pale (Metcalf and Copeland) Hops: 1. Kettle Hops Czech Saaz (Bittering) 2. Late Hop Addition Czech Saaz (whirlpool) Recipe by: Peter Chiodo, Jr., Artisan Brewer

Pours a lovely golden amber, slightly cloudy. Very little white head. Smooth mouthfeel. Taste of some hops, light citrus and pepper. Overall a nice drinking beer.

Formerly known as Robert Simpson Amber Ale, and just as uninspired as it was before. It amazes me that a brewery that tries to stretch boundaries as much as these guys still make a simple amber ale. It pours a translucent amber colour with a thin off-white head. Weak caramel and weak citrus comprise the aromas and flavours. Again, nothing memorable here.

Enjoyed with my better half at Pub Italia. From bottle, pours very minimal head and has a golden amber appearance. But for an amber ale, doesn't really share its name. Has a rusty roasted malt aroma, with peppers and nutmeg. Flavours are roasted malts, Saaz hops, citrus, and spices are apparent. Hints of cinnamon and cloves. Slightly warming sensation and drying mouthfeel. Pretty good but prefer the brewery's IPA output.
