Dark brown body with a thin head. Aroma is smokey, spicy, and meaty? Taste is earthy, sour and some slight sweet malt. Bitter finish. Thanks beercellar 2 for this baby!

i know everyone thinks i am nuts, but i prefer the spiced version. this was good though. nice chocolate carmel, like reisin candies and some nice spice (not as much as the spiced, but some) nutmeg and allspice. nice hint of cinnamon. mmmm... this beer, in every form i have had it, tastes a lot like a nice warm comfort beer.

11.24.04 12oz bottle from springslicker -- Thanks, Jay! A gusher, this brew erupted from the bottle a foamy mess of delicious smelling foam. Once contained in a Duvel tulip, a lovely dark color is realized and an expectedly large khaki head that lasts. Deep chocolate truffle aromas, no, tiramisu? Something rich and chocolatey with hints of cream and liquor. Very inviting, thankfully - you never know what to expect with a gusher. Something roasty or burnt on the nose that carries into the flavor. medium palate is soft, lightly eff, mildly unctuous. Sort of a dubbel meets porter style without the harshness of major alcohol influence of too strong roasting. Nice beer, laid back and mild all around. It’s too bad about Dogwood.

I know dubbels are the darker of the Belgian strongs, but I wasn't expecting this. The body is very dark. Dark brown, almost black with bright amber notes (really quite attractive.) It's really lacking in the head department though. The carbonation was low and the head small and pitiful. There was a very thin layer of yeast at the bottom of the bottle and apparently none of it made it to the glass. Except for the fact I lose a bit of the yeastiness I love, the clarity makes for a gorgeous color. The aroma is moderate. The aroma is nice, a balanced mix of spice, alcohol and old fruit. That carries into the flavor and it picks up some maltiness. I swear I was picking up a little bit of burnt malt in the finish earlier, but that's mellowed out now. Just a slight hint of bitterness seems to balance this out. This isn't big and bold, but quite reserved, but there's an elegance to it that I'm really enjoying. If you serve this very cold at all, you lose a lot. Cellar temp seems the perfect temperature for it.

This beer pours a murky brown somewhat reddish/magenta color with a think soapy tanned head and very little lacing. The aroma is nutty, candy sugar, vanilla, alcohol, oak and more alcohol...obtrusive amounts of alcohol! The mouthfeel is full bodied with a sweet malty backbone upfront. The mouthfeel gets thicker as the beer warms and as the aftertaste builds...its almost watery at first. Almonds, sugar candy, vanilla, and chocolate are prevalent. There’s no sign of the alcohol, wood and nutmeg/spice that I sensed in the aroma now. Dry, but not overwhelming finish. Something about the difference of the aroma and mouthfeel throws me off here. Acidic finish, somewhat sticky and cottony. Well aged, mild carbonation..probably two years old.... good, but lacking something...like a hoppy bite!

Bottle: Poured a dark colored beer with a huge off-white head with perfect retention. Aroma is a mix between roasted malts, sweet plums and strong malt. Taste is absolutely wonderful with some roastiness, sweet plums marinated in warm alcohol and a spicy finish. Overall, this is a greatly enjoyable brew while not exactly being rigorous to the dubbel style.

Bottle 427. Rating 1,300 in memory of Dogwood. Big 1 quart 1.8 oz bottle brought home from Atlanta. Opened the swingtop bottle top a LOUD pop. Foamed like crazy when poured into a tulip glass but the head went asay into nothing with 1.5 minutes. The aroma smelled of soaked wood chips and dried fruits. Something I think is amiss in this stuff for a few reasons. First, the head issue cannot be right. Second, the aroma has a funky sour peat thing going on. The taste could be interpreted as an abbey dubbel, but iinho, not a very good one. A sort of mustiness of a rotten plum and a sweetness that has too much brown sugar too it. No way I drink this whole bottle. This is strong.

Aroma of cherries and grapes. Flavor is velvety with a rich chocolate covered cherry and pine flavor. Slightly spicy and sweet aftertaste. I am regaining faith in Suthurn burs!

This brew pours with a very dark brown to black body toped by a medium thick tan head with lots of lacing. The aroma is slightly roasty and malty with slight sour notes. There’s also some vanilla and oakkey notes. The flavor is sweet, malty and roasty with slight chocolate notes, a touch of sourness and lots of vanilla. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry.
