We're really happy with this year's Stone 06.06.06 Vertical Epic Ale. This is a very dark ale fermented with Belgian Trappist yeast, so the flavors in it are really deep and complex. The Belgian yeast clove notes combine nicely with the roast malt flavors, with dried cherry and anise undertones. The flavors imparted by the special roasted malt are very rich, smooth, and silky. It will be interresting to see how this beer ages, and how the smooth roasted malt characters evolve with the spicy Belgian yeast character over time.

Rated in Aug. 2007. I believe this was courtesy of DragonStout. Pours a deep brown with amber hues and tan head. The aroma is sweet and fruity with added tartness. I think I smell wood too. The flavor starts off with dried figs and plums without being too barleywine like. I also get some hotness and caramelized malt sweetness. Nice. Could use more aging.

A decent abbey dubbel. I'm not a fan of the licorice notes I sense however. A reddish-brown pour with a brown head. Aroma is quite complex with notes of caramel, dark fruit, candy, yeast, and licorice. The flavour is dominated by the yeast and fruit, but the licorice is still there.

i've come to be a huge fan of the hoppy, almost ipa-like belgians, so i didn't like this one quite as much as the 08, but it's quite good. deep, complex, spicy. ready to break out a 2 1/2 year old bottle, and i'll ammend this review.

A dark brown apperance with a tan head. The aroma contains chocolate, raisins, bananas, licorice, and coffee. The flavor consists of chocolate, licorice, raisins, cloves, and coffee. An interesting twist on a dubbel certainly more on the stout side with a mix of hefe in there. The finish is a little bit boozy and sweet. The bitterness lingers. A very different and nice beer. One of my favorite Stone verticals!

It's been over a year between bottles and I can say that I think I like it a little bit better with some age on it. The beer poured out a mahogany brown color with a three finger thick, light tan head. Aroma has a hefty dose of roasted malts, and dark fruits with an underlying spicy/yeast character that I enjoyed. Flavors had similar tasted like the nose, but the sweetness factor was ramped up a notch or two. A very smooth beer and probably my favorite so far out of this series.

I really liked this brew. I had this at the beerfest and it was great. Reddish brown in color. Aroma and flavor of malts and dark fruits. Definitely worth a try.

Clear, dark brown with a warm, reddish hue and a beige head. Aroma of yeast and dried fruit. Fairly full-bodied, sweet and very fruity with some accents of dried fruits shining through in particular. Lightly vinous notes and a touch of oak.
