Impérial dark saison. Special collaboration between Dieu du Ciel and Shiga Kougen, a Japanese brewery located in Nagano. Hybrid of an imperial stout and a Belgian saison, its color is dark black. Strong bitterness and roasted malt flavours come in first, and are well balanced by a strong alcohol level. Dry and complex finishing provided by the saison yeast. The Isseki nicho was born in our Montreal brewpub in July 2009.

341 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 9.5%. Black colour, large tan head. Very nice roasty and spicy aroma. High level of carbonation. Roasty and spicy flavour too, notes of coffee, dark chocolate and black pepper, distinct bittering hops. Excellent beer.

341ml bottle from Bog Ridge. Dark ruby pour under a fluffy brown head. Well-laced with good hang time. Malts for the aroma, mostly, along with coffee, chocolate, and alcohol. Above average mouthfeel. Flavour was like the aroma, and quite tasty. Good finish with this one, alcohol, malt, coffee, and a bitterness. Interesting style and interesting beer.

Pours a real dark colour with barely red highlights. Big frothy light-brown head with great retention and some sticky-sloppy lace. Aromas of roasted malts, but balanced by caramel malts and notes of fruits and hints of vanilla. The taste starts off hoppy with some grassy hops and finished with the roasted malts that give out some coffee. Some chocolate in there. Imperial Dark Saison... a nice style !

Pours a thick brown bubbly head and has a dark brown almost black appearance. Good lacing. Much more hops in aroma than malts, sort of an earthy spiced hops with notes of citrus hops and grainy malts. Mild roasted malt flavours, chocolate, coffee and hints of caramel. A little sweet. Less hoppy flavour, mainly earthy hops, notes of nutty malts and toffee as well. Quite flavourful! Has a creamy mouthfeel with lively carbonation. Full bodied and some mouthcoating slickness. Has a mild bitterness in the finish, not offensive. Easy drinking, especially for a 9.5% abv beer.
