Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans. The Aphrodisiaque was born in our Montreal brewpub in May 2003 Note: Due to the Social Responsibility Laws in the Province of Ontario, the beer is known as Dieu du Ciel Aphrodite

I tried this beer on December 18, 2009 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canafda. The beer poured a blackics colour with a thin tan head. The aroma was roasted malt, vanilla, molasses, and chocolate. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation, yet slightly creamy. The flavour was sweet roasted malt, coffee, some vailla, and a bitter finish.

341 ml bottle, from a Quebecois co-worker. ABV is 6.5%. Black colour, low tan head. Strong and pleasant aroma of cocoa and vanilla. The flavour is not very sweet, but has plenty of cocoa powder and vanilla, with strong coffee and bittering hops in the finish. No aphrodisiaque effect detected - maybe I am immune?

Bottle. Colour – solid black, creamy brown head, great lacing. Aroma – roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla. Mouthfeel – full bodied, creamy, well carbonated. Flavour – roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla. More sweet than bitter.

Clear dark ruby, small lacing foam ring. Vanilla aroma, bitter coffee taste with chocolate and vanilla clearly present. Thanks Douberd for sharing. (Velp 201507)

Another wish list beer... another black beer, heavy, tight head, great lacing. Big coffe aromas and flavors, rich deeply raosted malts, molasses, overripe pitted fruits, dark chocolate, just a fantastic beer.

Pours black with a thin tan cap which reduces quickly to a thin ring. Leaves a few spots of lacing. Aroma and flavour are similar. Roasted malt, cocoa, dark chocolate and vanilla. Medium to full body. Creamy and smooth. Excellent flavour and very drinkable. Would like to try this on draught. Bought in N Y. Aphrodite on the label.

Pours very minimal brownish head and goes away fairly quickly. Has a very dark appearance, almost like motor oil. Aromas of cocoa, coffee roast, and chocolate. Flavours of chocolate, coffee, strong cocoa taste, hints of toffee and caramel. Nice balance of flavours throughout. Pretty smooth and easy drinking for a dark thick brew. Has a little bitterness on the palate. Pretty weak lacing and a somewhat watery mouthfeel. Still very tasty beer and would drink again for sure.

Strong vanilla nose with a nice background of bittersweet chocolate and mysterious smoke notes. Flavor is tobacco sweetness mixed with vanilla and really well blended, very tasty. The mouthfeel is smooth and chocolatey with just the right hint of cocoa bitterness at the finish.

My bottle says Aphrodite not Aphrodisiaque, same picture, same beer, had before. Holy double chocolate fudge cookies, buttery, vanilla. The vanilla is not so prominent, perhaps it needs to warm, started at 12c. Biscuit, scone, burn wheat. Nothing smooth like oats, but still manages to slide down easily. Similair to Back Hand of God, just more complex and a touch thicker. Thin for a stout but it is well suited.

341 ml bottle. Poured in the limited edition Dieu du Ciel mug an opaque black, with may be some ruby tones, colored Stout with a short half a finger tan colored foamy head that had a mid-sized retention. Soft carbonation. Poor lacing. The aroma is rich, heavy roasted malts, burned coffee beans, spicy, huge vanilla, dark chocolate, dark raisins. The flavour is powerful, an explosion of coffee beans, dark bitter chocolate mixed with always huge vanilla and roasted malts, hints of licorice. The mouthfeel is very smooth and invaded by the smoothly vanilla beans and the bitterness of the chocolate. This medium to full bodied stout has a lingering vanilla and bitter finish. One of my best beer esperiences. Thank you, Jean-François for offering us such an outstanding recipe.

341ml bottle, fairly fresh> Puts a pitch black opaque elixir in the goblet with a massive mocha-colored creamy cap...fair retention, great lacing quality. Aroma is deep roasted cocoa bean, some coffee, some oak, a very light honey-vanilla under tone and wet straw mingles with fusel. Medium bodied firm mouth feel, bitter-dark roast cocoa character. Front has roasty malts, cocoa bittering and hop spiciness in perfect balance....mid palate no complexity develops just the 3 major tasts starting to go roasty-bitter in the finish. Well crafted, decent cocoa stout but the complexity I expected never developed. At only 6.5% abv, this really isn’t a cellar beer but I’m going to put a couple down for a few months to see if I can bring that buried honey-earthy tone to the front and see some mild complexity.
