Deschutes Quail Springs IPA

i prefer the hoppier west coast style ipa to this british style (which has been replaced by inversion ipa), but this one was one of the better british ipas out there. pretty sure we won't see it again outside the pub in Bend.

My favorite style of beer from my favorite brewery. For some reason, this isn't around as much as most of Deschutes' beers. It's a shame. Pours a singed (lightly burnt) orange with a very respectable head that leaves a little bit of lace. I keep trying to smell it but as soon as I sniff I tip the glass up to taste more of it. The wonderful aroma of hops fills the nostrils. Joining it are light malts and a bit of citrus. Taste...Ooooooh yeah it's got taste. This is quite possibly the most well-balanced IPA I've had. With Chinook, Magnum, Styrian, *and* EKG hops, it can't help but to be complex. Simply wonderful. Mouthfeel is creamy with just enough bite to cleanse the pallet. Drinkability is beyond 20: I could drink this forever.

Nice amber pour with standard Deschutes reddish/copper tint on edges. Expect a lovely, wispy and thick white head that dissipates and laces my tulip glass. Nicely compiled hops are present in aroma and first taste, cascade fruitiness lingers throughout, but not as tick and syrupy as most Deschutes beers, most refreshing. Actively bitter and fairly light carbonation. Maybe too light a beer, but pretty good taste.

Extremely citrusy and flowery nose--this beer has firm, hoppy tones and strong malty character. I recognized a slight phenoylitic bite. Good clarity and hop flavor. Could benefit from a fuller mouthfeel for corrected balance. Good session beer.

Either Deschutes has dummied down since I first encountered their beers in the mid-90s, or my palate has matured. I had it again recently; this is a handsome beer, and has a nice floral nose, but the mouthfeel's a bit thin. Typical English style, emphasizes the malt more than the hops. Still, it's an overall pleasant enough beer. I'll still drink it now and again.

Another very typical IPA. A bit of body, and the hops, and hops again. Color is normal for the style, a bit of body, then some more hops. Boring, over priced, and as all De Shits brew, give you a find hangover the next day. Not as bad as Black Puke, but close. Miss it.

Maybe my scoring is a bit skewed by the last two beers that I have had this evening (a boring Pale Ale and lack-luster ESB, both from the Kennebec Brewing Company), but I think that even if my taste-buds weren't starved for hops, this beer would still shine...!

Apperence: Nice rocky head, nice Belgian lace, plenty of tiny carbonation bubbles (but not too much, of course). Dark-golden hued, with amber and red highlights.

For the aroma, taste, and mouthfeel, I would have to agree with other BA's on both the brewery and this beer -- this just plain rocks...! The big hop profile is here, of course...., but what makes this special is the intricate balance of different Bittering, Flavor, and Aroma hops. Chinook and Goldings definately, with perhaps something more exotic in the finish -- Styrian Goldings? Regardless, it would next-to-impossible to improve this...!

Overall drinkability: About the only reason I can't give this a perfect score is the fact that if I drank this all night long, I'm not so sure that I would ever want to drink anything else afterwards...! :^)

Not sure if I dig the new-look label of this beer..., seems like it would blend in with too many other craft brew offerings out there on the store shelves. But, that's just nit-picking.

The beer itself? Still Grade-A Excellent, IMO. The malt and hops are nicely melded, and despite protests from not-a-few folks, this isn't nearly as unbalanced as many other PacNW IPAs out there. Very easy for the style, while still making sure that each and every burp has a hoppy character... ;^)

A beer from a brewery that doesn't stir things up as much as others, but in this case, I think it works to their advantage. Rather than working on artificially creating a buzz in various beer-geek circles with over-the-top one-shot offerings..., they've concentrated on a select few, well-thought-out brands.

Highly recomended.

Medium gold color. Medium head. Aroma is citrus and very floral. Light bodied IPA. Malty and hoppy. Juicy. Malty and somewhat bitter. Nicely balanced. Grapefruit and apricot flavors. Flavors are somewhat between an English IPA and a West Coast IPA. Nice very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Pours a glowing hazy golden with a pillowy white head that retains fairly well and shows some lacing.

Its aroma is grassy and floral English hops with some citrus notes and bready malts.

The flavor is some slightly sweet malts followed by a grassy, earthy Noble hop bitterness. It has some metallic almost citrusy notes. Medium bodied.

Overall, a decent English IPA. Nothing too special though. I like Odell’s Cutthroat Pale Ale as a better English Pale Ale specimen.
