Release the hounds !! Big Rig’s Brewmaster Lon Ladell has just released Big Rig Black IPA. A nice big hop. 6.2% ABV 1.062 Original Gravity, 72 IBU, 24 LOVIBOND. The beer would be the perfect compliment to our spicy Jambalaya. So good! Come and join us for a pint.

The beer pours a solid dark brown colour with a quarter inch foamy light brown head that lasts. The aroma is coffee, citrus, and nutty malt. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour lacks any citrusy hop punch associated with a good Black IPA, however there is a strong coffee and roasted malt flavour which makes it enjoyable.

From a 473ml can. Pours a fairly big foamy brownish head. Has deep dark amber/brown appearance. Dirty lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, mild spices, and bitter hops. Flavours of light chocolate, coffee, sweet malty notes, a bit hoppy like resin/spice. Slightly oily mouthfeel. A bit of bitterness in the finish. Goes down pretty good. Not bad, just not as hoppy enough.

Bought a couple of cans from the LCBO. All the good characteristics of a good black ipa. Slightly more on the roasted malt side than the hops. Dark chocolate, black coffee, licorice and some pine bitterness. Decent looking pour that leaves lots of lacing.

Single can from the LCBO. Pours a real dark brown colour with red highlights. Big frothy mocha head with good retention and nice lacing. Oh wow... more on the sweet scent with chocolate malt and beautiful spices. Almost hints of anise with some mild grass. The hop is more present in the taste with some nice light bitterness, dry finish. Not as sweet for the flavours, more on the roasted malt as the base with some good hops. A pretty nice black IPA.
