Berthold Keller Premium Lager

Can. Colour - crystal clear pale yellow with a huge frothy white head which disappears into nothing within seconds. Lots of effervescence. Aroma - wet grass, cardboard, phenolic notes. Mouthfeel - thin and watery, goes along with the appearance. Flavour - very grainy, acidic and metallic notes. Not a very good beer at all.

I can say, without hesitation, that this beer was pure shit! Not sure what I was expecting from a Belgian lager. The beer pours a very pale yellow-gold with a huge white cap that disappears faster than a cockroach in the light. Lots of sour grains in the aroma with a weak hoppish note. Not a lot of good flavours in this, lots of acidic and metallic notes that make this a drain pour.

A lager from Belgium? In a can? After trying this garbage, one can easily see why Belgium is the ale capital of continental Europe - their lager brewing is just not up to snuff. The beer is clear gold, the aroma is cold metal and grain, and the flavour is weakly malty.

Belgian lager... two words that do not sound good together. Especially when the word "premium" is in front of lager. Not a good start. Even the can does not make it seem like a "killer" brew from Belgium. Pours a golden colour with a foamy white head that is big, has pretty good retention and creates a bit of lace. Smells like grain malt for a few seconds and then, chemical plastics and gross hay. Then, if you let it sit a bit, and calms down, and goes to a more normal hoppy-malt combination. Lightly carbonated (small bubbles) with some big bubble sitting at the bottom of the glass (waiting to come up when the glass is touched). Flat and sticky mouthfeel. Plain grain, corn and alcohol in the taste. Not refreshing like Euro swills, and not crisp like American lagers.

The beer poured a clear gold colour with a very thin bubbly/rocky head, and mild effervescence. The aroma is grainy malt with some metallic notes. The mouthfeel is weak to medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is grainy malt, sand, and wet metal. A below average beer.

Can: Poured a golden color lager with a medium bubbly head with actually good retention and some lacing. Aroma of adjunct and light cereal is pretty average. Taste is a mix between some adjunct and limited hops presence with a somewhat nice cereal presence. Body is about average with good carbonation. Below par overall and I have to wonder why somebody at the LCBO thought it would be a good idea to import this.

500ml can: Pours a crystal clear pale gold lager in the stein. Puffy 2 finger white cap, good retention and lacing, small bubbles. Aroma is fresh and unpretentious; pungent breadyness, wet hay and a light sulfurous mustiness from lager yeast. Nicely hopped but malts are weak and mouth feel is thin. Fast watery finish. A cheap extract brew sold at import prices from a commercial Belgian high gravity contract brewer. Not bad, not good either. Too pricey for this cheap brew, buy a Wernesgruner for the same price.
