Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales, created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? Hell no! we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This ale was blended with Avery's Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Bottle. Colour - hazed medium brown colour, creamy tan coloured head, very little lacing. Aroma - yeast, dark fruit, caramel, bready malt, and spices. Mouthfeel - medium to full bodied, creamy, well carbonated. Flavour - nicely balanced with sweet and roasted malt in the front and a spicy finish with a hint of bitterness.

It pours a slightly hazy copper and burnt-orange with a thick and foamy off-white head and copious lacing. An rich aroma of caramel malts, hops, oranges and citrus, raisins and prunes, plums, brown sugar, and mild spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and somewhat rich. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, oranges and citrus, raisins and prunes, plums, brown sugar, toast, and spiciness. Wonderful!

This was pretty solid, right down the middle. Pours a cola brown, with a pretty quickly disappearing foam. Flavors include cherries, brown sugar, chocolate. A strong sweetness to this. Rather thin mouthfeel. This guy is past his prime, and needs to be laid to rest. Good, and drinkable, but it was probably a lot better when it was fresh.

Pours a cloudy frosty copper with a lot of suspended bits of goodness and a frothy head. Aroma is bready. Mouthfeel full and round. Flavor is malty with a bit of sweet caramel. Nice.

Batch 2. Aroma is plums, figs, yeast and some spice. This pours a real murky brown color with shades of red and a moderate head for the style. Plenty of dark fruit flavor, some caramel, spice and sugar as well. Sweet but not sticky. A little thin. Nice flavors up front but this finishes a tad empty. Not a big complaint though. Pretty good beer but not great. I had Vinnie’s Salvation recently and I’d take that one over this blend but haven’t tried Avery’s by itself yet. Will have to do that. Perhaps both are best on their own but this blend is still quite solid. Great story behind the beer too.

Batch 2, Feb, 2008. Pours a cloudy amber-copper with a thin off-white head that manages to linger quite a while. Aroma is almost all malt and yeast, very syrupy with a little alcohol noticeable. Taste is definitely sweet, with hints of dark fruits and again, the alcohol manages to show thru in the end but not in an overpowering way.

A cloudy amber colored ale. A moderate spa[y white head without much hang time. Settles into a decent lacing. Aroma is straight forward. It is all malt. Syrupy, smooth body. And again the taste is all about the maly, sweet with alcohol thrown in.

Batch #2 from February 2008 poured into a large snifter. This beer took some time in the glass to warm up and flourish. A bubbly white head on top of an orange-copper colored body with heavy carbonation and very good lacing. Aroma is sugary and yeasty with some mixed fruits. Sweet and tangy with a light to medium body. Lots of fresh bread and dark fruit flavors balanced by a touch of citrus and a big sugary boozy kick. A good sipper, glad I shared it with a friend.

A Belgian strong ale born and bred in Colorado. This beer is a clear golden brown, with a medium sized head. The aroma is malt, with plums and yeast in the mix. The flavour is rather complex with very little alcohol taste.

bottled 2/08. this was good enough to make me want to search out both Avery & Russian River Salvation and have all 3 side by side. What a great beer. It's becoming evident that I like hoppy belgian beers and this one plays right along. dark amber to brown in color. wonderful aroma of perfectly balanced spicy yeast, fruit, and hops. this beer also has wheat in it, which lends a whole new level of complexity. the bubble-gum sweet characteristics of the fruity yeast, the sweet malt, and generous hops are blended expertly, and the finish lingers. I already want more. later 2009-didn't age that well, but still a "good" beer
