476 Saranac Adirondack Amber United States Vienna / Amber Lager 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Looks like the hopheads got after this lager, score seems a bit low after first tasting. I'm mostly used to Saranac IPA so I guess I can understand it to some degree. Ok, on to review. Decent nose a bit of grass, vanilla, and a carmel note. Nice light copper body with a good foamy head decent lacing. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with well done carbonation, a bit slippery which is OK with me. Flavor....not a lot of it. Starts quite neutral maybe a hint of grass and a hint of honey, the hops finish but its a bit odd, almost chemically. I am beginning to see the ratings now and take back the hophead comment. This is close to a good lager, put a little more taste up front and clean up the aftertaste and it would be a real solid entry, alas its not. I won't be looking for this one again. ReRate 1/13/13 I was a bit harsh, I like the lager nose on this one and it has staying power; grassy and malts (crystal?) Flavor is subtle but nicely balanced for a sweetish lager. Has a bit of sour to it. Major session brew methinks.

477 Peak Organic Nut Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Not a lot of nose; slightly malty/sweet and fruity with citrus and a hint of pine. this is "organic" and there is a lot of residue floating in the dark copper body. Dirty white head that has moderate retention and moderate lacing. Mouth is a bit thin IMHO carbonation well done. Flavor is uncomplicated but fairly standard altbier stuff. I can't really taste the chocolate malts and I might like a bit sturdier malt backbone,it hits slightly sweet then goes a bit sour ends with a fairly strong hop bite (not hophead strong). The finish is very clean and dry, I might try the next one a bit warmer and see if the malt comes out more. Tastes like more to me and I suspect you could drink a lot of these, good session beer and overall a nice job.. A few days later RERATE I let it warm just a bit this time before pouring suspected the first one was too cold but I was too thirsty! Huge foamy head, great lace, nose a bit more fruity but still a bit weak, very nice taste, chocolate malt just detectable, great hop, malt balance, real nice beer!

478 Sierra Nevada Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Well i finally got around to reviewing this standard. Pours the color of honey and actually is a bit pale, quite lovely with a nice two finger tight and dirty white head. Head is short-lived but leaves a moderate amount of good lacing. Nose is pine, vanilla, and perhaps a toasty malts with perhaps just a hint of ginger. Mouthfeel is moderate to light in body with nicely done carbonation. Taste is great and moderately complex. Hits slightly sweet with a hint of carmel follows malty then good pine and pepper in the swallow after-taste is a bit resinous and just on the sweet side of dry but quite clean. A very well done American style of Pale Ale (which is to say quite hoppy for its type.) Very solid session brew.

480 Sweetwater Sweet Georgia Brown United States Brown Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sampled while waiting for a connection at Atlanta airport so ignore the price. Deep copper witha dirty head with good retention and average to good lace. Sweet nose from malt and hops. Mouthfeel was quite foamy and slightly watery, maybe a bit over carbonated? Nice flavor, very drinkable, wlightly sweet, not complicated, and more hops bitterness than expected in the style (probably to balance out the sweet malts). this is a pretty drinkable beer.

481 Abita Turbo Dog United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

I suspect the bad reviews come from folks who are drinking this too cold! This brew is quite different once it warms to what I think of as English pup temperature then it is when fresh out of the fridge. When cold, this beer tastes to me like a slightly watered-down stout; mostly just bitter coal tar taste. Bring that bottle outta the fridge for 10 or 15 minutes before you open it and its a whole different animal! Pours very dark brown with ruby undertones present when held to light, not quite opaque. Pours with a nice caramel colored head that has only modest retention but delivers very nice lace. Nose of figs, coffee, and dark chocolate; a mild nose but nice although not long lasting. Mouth is medium bodied and, for a beer that appears quite still in the glass, quite frothy... the carbonation is very tight. When very cold this beer tastes nothing but bitter but when allowed to warm slightly the flavor really rounds out; the crystal and chocolate malts come into their own and balance the hops quite nicely. It hits slightly sweet, goes bitter, and finishes chocolate goodness with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Really a masterful job of balancing. There is a bit of a sweet-sour thing going own that reminds me of Belgium and may be responsible for the reviews that detected mettalic (its not!)This may be the only beer that I have given a higher "overall" number to then I did to any other category; not overly complex yet this beer is more than the sum of its parts. Well done Abita!

482 Hofbrau Munchen Oktoberfestbier / Hofbräu München Oktoberfestbier Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Malty biscuity nose, pale golden in color with average head and retention, nice lace. Light in the mouth, uncomplicated in flavor, good malt backbone, not too sweet, enough hops to make it interesting, finishes a touch bitter. I could see drinking a lot of this, good session, good for a lager but their is a touch of skunk. I do wonder though. The beer I am drinking is from a 6 of 12 ouncers and is called Oktoberfest (not Oktoberfestbier) and its in a scary green bottle! I don't know if this is a different animal then what others (BeerLover) have reviewed and the brewer's website is of no use at all; it doesn't even list mention brews!

483 Schneider Weisse Tap 5: Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse Germany Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I really like this beer! Soft, floral nose also has lots of fruit in it; figs and cherries. There is also malt in the nose with some carmel notes. Huge merangue head thick and frothy that lasts. the lace is large, not fine, but nice. Cloudy pale golden-amber body. Mouthfeel is full with lots of satin slipping around, not chewy but quite enjoyable. The flavor is unique; half hefe and half imperial IPA---its an interesting battle and the brewers have pulled it off nicely! Flavor is very complicated. Lots of fruit, black cherry and orange. A bit of piney flavor as the aroma hits the tongue that quickly dissolves into a decent malt backbone. There is a bit of honey in the initial taste as well. The whole thing is nicely heated with the small presence of alcohol (mot of it nicely masked.)The finish is VERY clean but leaves a sour aftertaste.

484 Gearys Pale Ale United States English Pale Ale 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

I always pick up a six or two when I visit the in-laws in Maine, this is the first time I took some home to review. Ton of malt and yeast in the nose when first poured, when that blows off it reveals a nose of floral hops, some citrus, some spice, a sweet very nice nose. A bit of a surprise with the light brown body, very clear and nice carbonation bubbling up the glass. I moderate slightly creamy off-white head that is fairly short lived but leaves a nice thick skim coat. Very nice lacing. A very full, for a pale ale, mouthfeel that is silky and creamy, really nicely done! There is a lot of sweetish malt in the taste but its very well balanced with an astringent hoppiness. There is also a fruity presence in the middle of the taste and the alcohol is also present, leaving a nice warming feeling. This may be the best pale I have encountered. This one is walking the line between an American Pale and an English ESB. Back when I was a kid, in 73, I spent a month in London. Ate exclusively at the pubs and drank a whole lot of "bitter". Didn't know what that really meant then, this was long before American craft brewing caught fire. It was exclusively on draught and I have no idea what brewers it was coming from, I have always wished I could taste it again now. I think this beer comes close, perhaps a bit maltier. It also took me a while to get into the swing of the beer being served less than cold. I'm gonna let the last of this Geary's warm a bit for a final tasting. Hmmm, it likes to be a bit on the warm side, the flavor really blossoms and gets more complex. The imported English yeast and malts (I am tasting a hint of the chocolate malt now)is shining through and, in my opinion, putting most American pales to shame! Great brew and great session brew!

485 Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier Germany Rauchbier 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Moderate short-lived foamy white head sits over a pale golden body. Lots of malt in the nose and a touch of vanilla and lightly burnt toast. Mouthfeel is thin and clean and, to my taste, a touch flat. The flavor is timid (it is a lager after all). Hits slightly sweet, which follows with an odd flavor from the smoke (reminds me a bit of smoked salmon...there is almost a slight fishy taste to the beer!). There is a decent, for a lager, hops bitterness and it ends with a slightly off-putting chemical taste, over all kind of fish and chips meets New Your street vendor roasted chestnut smoke. Or maybe its just smoked skunk. Ok its not my cup of tea. I am not eager to buy this again but I see BeerGuy got a good head from his pour so perhaps I wonder if this bottle had been mistreated. Eagle and Hannah rate it well to so I really should revisit some day. RERATE: 8/23/2013 Very nice lager..can only assume previous rating was on a poorly handled brew. Smoke barely detectable, really smooth and clean, chemical taste mentioned previously not detectable. Liked this a lot!!!!!!!!!

486 Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA United States Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Ok, reviewing from memory after an afternoon on the Hudson starting with Brown Sugga, followed by Hampton Double White, and ending with DogFishHead 120 minute, amazing I can still type! jesus 20.04 abv it really is amazing I can type! OK they set sail here for a really big beer with really big hops and they didn't fail. Decent head cosidering the ABV sits on a orangish body, clean medium mouth well carbonated. Major hops flavor but somehow not overpwoering, nicely done for a real hophead brew. Good balance good complaxity considering its aimed at 2 notes, hops and alcohol. Alcohol at 20 abv is really well masked. Excellent oddball that is very drinkable! This beer is all it claims to be.

Ok, reviewing from memory after an afternoon on the Hudson starting with Brown Sugga, followed by Hampton Double White, and ending with DogFishHead 120 minute, amazing I can still type! man this is a great witbier! Nice forthy head on a deep gold body, nose of malt and fruit and a bit f citrus. Good mouthfeel, fairly thick and full for the type and silky at the same time. Great flavor, really well balanced and not overly spiced. Sweet notes hinted at but a nice tartness prevails. Very similar to a heffe. Good wheat flover in there too with a clean finish, another great beer!

Beautiful beer! Nice carmel head with dark brown body and good lace. Toasted malts and carmel in the nose, nicely done. Full thick mouthfeel. Lots of toasted carmel malt backbone in the taste with suprsing amount of hops bitternes, really well balanced, alcohol really well masked, great beer!

489 Blue Moon Belgian White / Belgian Moon United States Witbier 3.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

REviewing the bottle, but I like the draft better. Not much nose and what is there is orange and citrus. Ok appearance, decent head over a nice foggy dark gold body with nice effervesance. Poor lacing. Mouth feel is well done, smooth medium full, foamy. Flavor in the bottle not nearly as strong as the draught. Its deinately a bit insipid. Hits dry, goes sweet with some orange , slightly carmelized, corriander, tart finish, perhaps a bit more hops than one would expect. Drinkable but nothing to write home about, I am kicking it up to a 7 here because the draught flavor is MUCH better. Funny for a beer I drink often this one is getting fairly low marks!

490 Dogfish Head Shelter Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

The nose is mild but very appealing. Cinamon, pepper, violets and rosemary. A slightly fogged light coppr body is topped with a moderate head that leaves a long-lasting skim coat and laces nicely. Mouth is a touch light with a real nice back of the tongue tickle. I like the flavor a lot! Hopheads are probably going to find it slightly lacking for an American Pale but it is quite hoppy. Starts ever so slightly sweet, goes very nicely bitter and ends exceptionally clean and dry. The malt backbone is really well done with just a hint of a toasted/caramel flavor. I find the balance exceptional. This is a great session beer!

491 Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat United States Witbier 1.8

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 2

This is one odd duck! The nose is really strong, a bit of pine, a lot of suspect fruit/floral, a lot of lemmon and corriander. My first thought was really that this smells like a toilet freshener! The head is big but perhaps not as long-lasting as the style would wish. Sits on a very cloudy pale apricot colored body. The lacing is really more like foaming. I find the color and the nose both off-putting. Mouth feel is both thin and foamy. The flavor is corriander and for me apple with a touch of lemon. Almost tastes like an off hard cider that had been watered down. I also get a touch of apricot in the flavor, like a weak Magic Hat #9 with odd spicing added to it. Maybe some other odd berry as well...bluebery? Its more spicey than sweet and finishes fairly clean with just a hint of hops in the finish. I really don't care for it. When I first smelled it I thought God, what is in this thing, it smells like artificail fruit flavoring. It tastes the same to me. I am willing to bet that this beer has artificial fruit flavoring in it. I rarely say this but I don't think I can finish it, half way through I already feel a hangover coming on. BAD BEER!

492 Paulaner Oktoberfest Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Mild toasty, malty nose with carmel/toffee tones, and a bit nutty; smells like dessert! A clear and very deep copper body with a dark beige head of medium size and retention and minimal lacing, it really looks like a beer! The mouthfeel is full and round with minimal carbonation. I can be a hop head but I really do like this flavor. It hits sweet but rapidly goes a bit more bitter then the nose predicts then goes candy sweet. Alcohol is fully masked. Finish is slow to develop but is nicely tart/sour. A brew of medium complexity with excellent balance for its type. And very sessionable.

493 Kingfisher Lager India Pale Lager 2.9

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Look, US mass brewed swill could take a real lesson from this Indian relative. OK, it was a hot day and I was eating a very hot Indian chicken dish but gosh darn this is a pretty decent Pale Lager. Unlike the American counterparts there is at least a hint of hops here, mostly in the nose. There is a bit of citrus in the nose and much less grass then US counterparts. Seems to ahve a more solid malt body which leads to some sweetness but still a very nice clean crisp finish. NO SKUNK! also.while there may be adjuncts, I don't really taste them. Finally, unlike Bud etc, this beer still tastes all right as the chill comes off it. I can't call this macro swill and I believe it shows what Macro swills COULD be if they were just willing to make a penny less profit per bottle. hats off to Kingfisher for being respectable!

494 North Coast Acme California IPA United States IPA 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Wow, this beer is underrated here! It starts with a very nice American IPA nose, pine forest, carmel, and orange citrus. Pours a beautiful off-white frothy head that has good retention and sits over a very clear pale copper-colored body. Far and away the best lacing I have ever seen. A solid medium bodied mouthfeel that is ever so slightly foamy. Flavor is fantastic. Its probably low-rated here because the hops are nicely balanced, its very hoppy but NOT the level true hop heads prefer. Flavor starts sweet with a nice malt back-bone and some bit of toffee with the hops kicking the back of the tongue in a delightfully bitter manner. It then shifts to a nice sweet-tart battle and seems as if the sweet if going to win but it leaves you with a very dry clean finish. Strong alcohol content for an IPA is very well masked and contribues to the dry finish. This is art in a glass!

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Well to review this it should really be a hot day and a lot of bbq going on, or maybe floating on a cat in the Carribean, but I finally broke down and bought a six anyway; its gonna have to stand on its own. Mild nose with a lot of grain and not much else, maybe a touch grassy. Very white , short-lasting head and moderate lace sits over an extremley pale gold body, a touch more yellow then most macros and cystal clear. Mouthfeel is watery but OK. I would have thought, from memory, that this would taste sweeter then it does. Its not complex at all, typical macroswill flavor but lacking perhaps the extremes of bad tasting aditives. Consequently not much taste at all. Theres a bit of corn, a bit of malt, very little hop, and it ends with less skunk than most macros.

496 Duvel Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Bread and honey in the nose with just a hint of vanilla and lemmon. Amazing head! Pure white frothy, huge .....whipped eggwhites is comprised of VERY large bubbles, beautiful to gaze at with the best lace I have seen. This sits on a very transparent pale gold body. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a nice tingle. (It might be my imagination but I have had maybe a quarter of the bottle while writing this and I think I am already a bit buzzed.)Flavor is very clean, alcohol very well masked. Its a perfectly balanced flavor that is constantly complex throughout, not a lot of stages to the taste except perhaps a distinct aftertaste that goes deliciously sour and a nice bit of bitter. The alcohol shows up in the aftertaste more as a feeling then a taste. The taste......earthy with a bit of nut flavor, sour ripe fruit somewhere between grape and fig, a complcated yeast component and a nice malt flavor that gives a solid backbone that is ever so slightly sweet and plays beautifully witht the sour. This is just art in a glass; an intense complexity of brewing perfection hidden in what appears to be at first a very simple flavor. This is incredible beer-making! I am starting to think my ratings at the high end are low, this is probably a 4.7 beer as are several others that I have ranked in the low 4's (which are tops of my list.) One other comment, for a strong ale this is incredibly lager like in its character!

497 Samuel Smith Pure Brewed Lager United Kingdom Lager 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Nice light nose of cloves lemmongrass yeast and cashews. Beautiful meringue head with moderate retention sits over a very pale and clear golden body. Leaves minimal lace. Mouthfeel is very very light, slippery water but with a very nicely done fiz. Its been awhile since I've had a lager but this flavor seems very pale. There is a hint of yeast in the middle and a tiny bit of hops at the end with a slight mineral taste throughout. Goes a bit sour at the end. I also get a hint of corn or some other odd grain flavor. Not terribly off-putting but not worth the money IMHO. I need to go back and read my review of SS organic lager, which I recall liking. I think this is its very poor cousin.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Lots of yeast in the nose with a touch of floral hops. Moderate head with short retention and light lace over a pale copper body. Mouth is a touch watery. Flavor is very timid, not complex but well balanced caramel notes with a good malt body and slight hops bite at the end. this is a hard beer to review, poor in many ways but it would be a great beer to give to a friend that only likes macros. And if you ever feel like a light beer, this would be a good choice as well. Its numbers are going to come out low but for wither of the previous situations this beer would be first rate.

I have a bit of allergies going on so may have to revisit this but I get almost no nose, what there is malt. Pours a clear, medium, copper colored body with minimal head and moderate retention, some lace and malt evidence floating on the top of the brew. Mouthfeel is medium and fizzy in a good way. Coasts the mouth well.First taste is sweet malt and alcohol which dissapears slowly into pepper, and a touch of pine. Gets nicely bitter in the end, hops are well done. No masking of alcohol here, its an integral part of the flavor and its really quite a nicely balanced flavor. Nice warming in the aftertaste which is dry and clean. I wonder again if its my nose and not the beers nose. I will revisit as this would get very high marks if the nose was better (and I would love a nicer head and lace.)ReRate 8/20/08 Nice nose, malt, vanilla, ripe dark fruit of cherry or fig with some floral hops as well, maybe even a great nose, and the lacing is real nice as well.

500 Brooklyn Local 1 United States Belgian Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I have had a couple of the big bottles and the flavor seemed to vary somewhat. Pop the cork and it pours a hazey medium copper with a big head and nice retention with good lace. Complex nose with alcohol, spice and yeast all present. Mouth if full and smooth. The first time I tried this the taste was quite yeasty and reminded me of a good organic lager. Second time around ( and maybe the first time was me, not the bottle, it wasn't the first beer I had that evening) it presented a very complex profile; still plenty of yeast with lots of clove-like spiceyness and a lot of fruit... figs and earthyness. Finish is rich and not quite dry. In a blind test I might have thought this was a heffe. A very well done American version of a Belgain Strong. By the way, local 1 is the stage hands union in NYC, coincidence?
