426 Warsteiner Premium Verum Germany Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

This is a mighty fine drink of water! Almost no nose but a touch of grassy aromas and a hint of biscuit. Pale yellow body is clear with a moderate white head and no lace. Mouth is VERY thin and lacking in carbonation. Flavor is somewhere less than mild and uncomplicated. There is a hint of bitter hops and a fair amount of grass with a slight sour finish. I would have guessed adjuncts in this brew but the brewer says no. Better than most water. RERATE 10/22/2016 Beer hasn't changed much but I think I was harsh originally. I get some brief short lived peach and biscuit in the nose so +1 there. I am getting decent lace this time so +1 there. Mouth is still thin but carbonation is decent so +2 there. Finish seems more dry then sour but very little taste here, but also very little off-putting taste. +2 there. Overall +1

427 Hofbrau Munchen Kindl Weissbier (Hefe Weizen) / Hofbräu Munchen Kindl Weissbier (Hefe Weizen) Germany Hefeweizen 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

this is a great hefe, really sets the style for others to match, the spicing is subtle yet present. Complicated and long-lasting nose...wheat, yeast, lemon, pepper and a deep not quite banana. Beautiful clouded gold body with a lovely very white head that has amazing retention, no lacing to speak of. Mouth is medium bodied with a bit of slipperyness and a nice tingle. Flavor is dead on style, lemmon, bready notes, alcohol fully masked, just the right amount of sour to play with the sweetness, no significant hops presence, and a crystal clean finish. This is a classic.

428 Long Trail Brewing India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

I suspected, after the first sip, that this would get low ratings, under-rated I believe. Long Trail is trying to re-create an historical version of an original IPA. The result is much sweeter than one expects in an IPA, especially and American IPA (which this beer is NOT trying to be)an the consequence, no doubt, is a lower range of ratings. I wasn't around when India was a colony but I am willing to take Long Trails attempt at face value. The nose is fairly well hopped but crystal malt predominates. This beer is unfiltered and naturally carbonated resulting in a very nice white head with good retention and nice lace and a slightly cloudy body that is pale gold in color with a hint of amber. The mouth is very full for an IPA and slick and chewy, its a very nice mouth feel. Flavor...this beer is as sweet as the nose promises. The initial hops taste become overwhelmed by sweet malts, there is a taste of violets, the hops are piney not fruity but the malt is a bit fruity, there is an astringency to the finish. This beer wants to be served on the cold side. The balance goes all to hell as it warms. All in all a very interesting experiment and probably a very good brew to introduce to folks who have never had hops before providing they drink it fast! (this is turning out a 4, if I reviewed it only after it sat in the glass for 15 minutes it would be closer to 3, the floral tastes dissapear and the hops turn to skunk).

429 Saranac Black & Tan United States Stout 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

WEll really, can you enjoy a black and Tan that comes in a bottle? Where is the visual appeal? This pours a not quite opaque dark brown with Ruby highlights, a decent beige colored head with OK retention and very nice lace. Nose is surprisingly hoppy for a combination of an "irish stout with an all-malt German style amber lager". Lots of pine and cirus notes, not much toasted malt in the nose. Mouth is a touch thin and a touch slick, not too bad really but maybe a touch under-carbonated. First taste didn't have much flavor but it was too cold, its filling out some now, will take a break for 10 minutes or so. Now I am noticing a big fruit flavor at the finish which is preceded by a bit of chocolate and rounded out with pine and citrus hop notes. A bit creamier mouth as well. I am not sure this should be classified as a stout, its an odd duck. Does not much resemble a traditional Black and Tan, a bit watery for a stout, not as sweet as a porter but pretty easy drinking.

430 Ommegang Rare Vos United States Belgian Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Buddy had a bottle in the fridge while we were racking to secondary; what the hell a Belgian Breakfast! Typical of Ommegang, this offering hits the style nicely. Pours a cloudy medium amber color on the reddish side with big frothy head and nice retention. Lots of malt souring fruit in the nose. Good full mouth slippery and good carbonation. Pretty complex flavor with solid malt backbone, initial sweetness and corriander, sour apples and fig, slightly bitter towards the end and a sour dry finish. Does not sit as heavy as some other Belgians which I find quite a pleasing trait. A very very well made beer.

431 Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose of roasted malt is mild, pours a smallish off-white head with poor retention and no lace sitting atop of a clar pale copper colored body with odd hints of yellow and green. Mouth is a nice medium body coats the palate well, but carbonation is under done. Flavor starts slightly sweet and malty, goes to hints of pear and fig, has a bit of a hops bite towards the end and finishes peppery and just a touch sour. Fix the carbonation and this would be a much better brew.RERATE 11/2011 Been drinking a lot of this on draft and its excellent, carbonation is fine, malt presence is very large, best Oktoberfest I have had.

432 Sierra Nevada Harvest Fresh Hop IPA - Southern Hemisphere Harvest® United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Man this is for the hop heads! Great big hops nose that eventually rounds out a wee bit, lots of pine and some spice. Good beige head atp a lovely deep amber body with nice lace and retention. WONDERFUL in the mouth, big full wet slippery carbonation nicely done. I am not quite a hop head but this flavor is wonderful, huge hops without tasting "green", screams of freshness, lots of grapefruit, lots of pine and pepper, decently balanced, alcohol masked, somehow doesn't finish as bitter as it tastes, nicely done.

433 Smuttynose Portsmouth Lager United States Vienna / Amber Lager 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

What a wonderful surprsise. One of the tastiest lagers I have encountered. A great deal of lightly toasted malt in the nose and subtle spicy hop notes, peppers and earthy nutmeg-like notes. Pours a surprising middle amber color that is clear and with a glorious head and excellent lacing. Mouth is very full for a lager in a very nice way. Almost chewy and works the whole mouth. I loved the flavor (OK I like hop-head IPA's but I like otehr things TOO!), killer malt backbone with a touch of sweet carmel notes that finishes with subtle fruity hop notes and just a hint of bitter. A wonderful sense of balance and proportion with a depth of flavor that is rare in a lager. On top of all that this would be a killer session brew. Great job Smuttynose, hats off!

434 Uerige Doppel Sticke Germany Altbier 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Grapes and figs in the nose along with serious citrusy hops. Very dark amber body with minimal head and lace. Very fullish slippery mouth, flavor is sweet carmelized sugar at first hit followed by anice, pears, raisins, pepper and a strong sour and bitter finish, after taste of piney hops.

435 Hook Norton Twelve Days United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Sweet brown sugar/caramel nose with malt and hops present as well as some dark ripe fruit. Clear dark dark brown body with a lot of ruby overtones very minimal head with no lace. Mouth is surprisingly light bodied. Taste hits sweet, strongly bitter hops kick in, hints of coffee and fig and some slight alcohol and carmelized malts, pretty nicely balanced. Tastes almost like a slightly smoked porter. but thinner.

436 Troutbrook Thomas Hooker NorEaster Winter Lager United States Vienna / Amber Lager 1.5

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

I have added this beer. Hard to name the style because its a spiced lager and that is NOT an available style here. I don't know what to say, I have had three hooker beers on draft at my local and they all suck big time yet they get good reviews at most sites; it might be a problem with my local. However here goes. Sweet nose, not of malt and not of fruit. Medium amber body with thin head that provides no lace. Thin mouthfeel, almost watery. Bad flavor, mostly annice or licorice and putrified malt. Disgusting beer, perhaps because my local has a dirty tap?

437 Troutbrook Thomas Hooker Irish Red Ale United States Irish Ale 2.1

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Nasty sour off-tasting stuff! Maybe it was a bad keg? Very little nose, tiny skim coat of a head, no lace, copper body, thin mouth, very sour flavor, touch of hops, no malt, sucked!

438 Brooklyn Lager United States Lager 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Drinking this right after a lovely Bklyn Pennant Ale which is the wrong order to drink em in, oh well...here goes. Mild nose but nicely blended hops which are citrusy, a touch of vanilla, and a wee hint of roasty malts. Very nice color for a lager, light copper clear body, very lovely frothy head with good lace. Mouth seems just a bit thin but well rounded. Very little taste up front but finishes quite dry and bitter not much malt flavor but some interesting pepper and lemon peel. Perhaps a bit of chemical in the late taste but still ends clean. Overall a good American lager, a good brew to slip to a Bud drinker, very easy to drink. Like all Bklyn beers this is wonderfully balanced.

OK Mexican macro-swill, nothing special here, balance is OK, touch sweet, drink it very cold with some nice spicy food on a hot day. Lots of slightly off flavors probably some corn or rice.

My brew of choice, and its a limited choice, at the Smallest Bar In Key West, a bar I like much more than the beer selection; what can I say? Above average micro-swill has a unique ill favor, a bit metallic but drinkable. Reminds me of Red Stripe.

441 Unibroue La Fin du Monde Canada Abbey Tripel 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Very nicely done! Poured in a flute, ala Hefe style, a great head with a wonderful nose of spice, biscuit, peppers, anice, an overwhelming nose, that sits ontop of a foggy deep gold body; excellent. Nice mouthfeel, medium and fizzy as should be. For its style the flavor is delicate, lots of fruit and grape notes but a solid malt body, tastes a cross between a Hefe and a Saison, just really nice, tart and earthy with deep fruit. This is an excellent beer, very well done!

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Decent pils, good malt and biscuit in the aroma, nice golden body, OK head with minimal lace. Medium mouthfeel, full-flavored for a pils, lots of malt and bread, a wee bit of peppery spice, an OK pils.

Pale in color and flavor this euroPale is so so. Not much nose, a bit of malt. Decent head over moderate amber body, no lacing to speak of. Mouthfeel is medium. Pale skunk balanced by a dribble of hops and corn.

444 Redhook ESB United States Extra Special Bitter 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Good balance of malt and spice in the nose, perhaps a bit too floral for style. Light copper body with decent short lived head and moderate lace. Mouthfeel is bready and medium bodied, good for style but perhaps a bit thin. Very malty flavor with strong bittering hops ends perhaps a bit too sweet, but aftertaste is bitter. There is a metalic/chemical taste in the finish that is objectionable. Not a bad effort, I prefer their IPA.

445 Leinenkugel Summer Shandy United States Fruit Beer 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bought one on a lark in Key West. Aroma is lemon, wheat, and more lemon. Pours a foggy light gold body with a frothy, creamy white head that lasts quite well, little lace. Decent weiss mouthfeel, slippery, fizzy, not bad. Flavor is mostly lemonade, with some wheat coming through and finish is bitterish lemon peal. Not bad really pretty drinkable, it is what it says it is.

446 Michelob Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Wow, really not very good! When ice cold first sip seems promising, lots of hops. let it warm for 5 minutes and fogetaboutit. Aroma has a sweetness to it that somehow doesn't seem like it comes from malt and a lot of pine and citrus from hops. Pours a pale copper body with mediocre off white head with poor retention and no lacing. Mouth is shockingly thin considering there is a lot of flavor (will get to that later, its not all good). Decent fiz in the mouth, but perhaps a bit much for the style. Flavor, what to say. Lots of hops, hints at a carmel malted backbone goes really bad midway through. Lots of off flavors, medicine, aluminum, and ends with a detergent taste. Don't think I will finish this crap. There is a nod to the style but I am pretty sure I taste rice , corn, or other adjuncts. All that money and they produce this crap!!!!!!!!!

447 Michelob Porter United States Porter 2.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Nose is decent but a bit sweet. Decent malt notes and some spicy hops. NIce pale brown head pours nice. Very foamy with good lace and retention. Mouth is way too thin for the style. Flavor has some roasted notes and a hint of ripe dark fruit. NOT complex and NOT full flavored. Another crap effort from Mich, not as bad as the terrible pale and not as bad as the medicore marzen but really non-descript. I don't get it, what are they doing?

448 Michelob Marzen United States Marzen / Oktoberfest 2.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Just tasted their Pale ale, poured it out and on to the Marzen ,which is a bit better but still is poor. Aroma was promising, just about right for the style, lots of sweet malts scents and maybe a touch of pepper. Very pale copper colored ( a bit too pale) and transparent with a poor head that doesn't last and doesn't lace. Mouth is OK, a bit thin but not too bad. Flavor has the same problems as the Pale, decent malt body but lots of off flavors as well, again metalic and medicine. I think its adjuncts, or some cheap method of bittering. Why are they making this crap? what is the point? They are just going to teach people to drink other beers!

449 Brooklyn Ale (Pennant Ale) United States English Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Generally it seems to me that Pale Ales are underrated here, perhaps the style is just not very popular; milder than APA's or IPA's. the nose on this is a mix of big malts and cirtusy hops, fairly standard for the style. A nice clear light copper body with a good frothy off white head, moderate retention and lace. Good mouth, a light medium body slick, nice fiz. Carmel malt flavor provides a decent backbone with a stronger hops bite then might be expected, this tastes more like a light IPA than a Pale Ale. Finish is dry and clean, alcohol not present (and I miss it.) This is a very acceptable session brew but there are better American Pales out there, I like Geary's alot more. Nothing wrong here, just a bit unbalanced, not enough malt but very drinkable. Rerate: 12/12/08 What was I thinking/drinking? Lovely malt backbone, great hops balance at the end, really nice brew!!!!!

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

winey nose typical for the style, lots of grape and lots of malt, very sweet nose with just a touch of hops citrus. Meidum amber body below a small white head, very little lacing. Mouth is full and sticky. Flavor is big, hits fruity then goes very earthy with fig and sweet raw malty notes, goes very bitter and sour near the end and finishes with an alcohol warmth and an interesting peppery aftertaste. A heavy brew!
