451 Smuttynose Old Brown Dog United States Brown Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

100th review and just bottled first batch of homebrew! Sweet nose, lots of malt and citrus very well balanced. pours a dark copper slightly foggy body with carmel colored medium head, nice retention and moderate lace. Medium mouthfeel is slick, coats the mouth nicely, tight well done carbonation. Flavor is sweet chocolate and figs with nice balance on citrusy hop. finish is slightly bitter with a sweet/sour aftertaste. Really excellently balanced for a sweetish beer!

452 Saranac Black Forest United States Schwarzbier 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Initial pine in the nose gives way to some nice roasted malty notes. Pours a VERY dark brown with just a hint of ruby, and a decent short lived off white head with very little lacing (perhaps the weakest aspect of this Schwarzbier.) Mouthfeel is a bit lighter than the medium one would expect. Flavor is mild but well balanced. Hints of chocolate start the taste with some fig/ ripe dark fruit, hops kick in fast and they are citrusy. Finish is very dry and clean, the flavor profile is quite well done, a touch of chemical in the after taste.

453 Saranac Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Fairly strong and very hoppy nose, pine, citrus and maybe a bit of raisin. this amount of hops nose in an American Brown is optional but I think its overdone here. Very deep brown with hints of copper body that is clear, nice head off white, not long lasting, but leaves a nice skim coat. Mouthfeel is thin, too thin I think for the style. I am not getting enough malt in the flavor. I pick up cirtus hops initially, mid taste is some almost non-existent crystal malts, there is a somewhat nasty astingency high up in the rear sides of the mouth, finishes dry and just a hint of sweet. The label promises a traditional Brown with lots of malt flavor nicely balanced with hops but that just isn't happening for me. This is quite drinkable but I think it misses the style here and there. Ok, now I have read the other reviews, many mention maltiness but I still don't taste it, oh well. LATER AS it warms the malt is coming through a bit more which is nice but the mouth is getting ever more thin, just not a well made beer.

454 Erdinger Festweisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Very unusual brew! Really big nose lots of malt and some hoppy fruit, not bananas or other esthers normally found in a hefe. large eggwhites head befitting the hefe style atop a very cloudy light peach/amber body. Light on the lacing. Mouthfeel is a bit fullish and not as slick as a normal hefe. Not a complicated flavor but nicely balanced for a fest. Not much hops, lots of malt, and some yeast... again befitting the hefe style but clove, and tropical fruit esters notably absent, this really is between hefe an marzen/oktoberfest. Quie interesting, very drinkable. A faint sourness to the finish which is dry.

455 Spaten Oktoberfestbier Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Reviewing the bottle but it is quite similar to the draft. malt and biscuit and vanilla in the nose, no real hops nose at all. Clear medium amber body is topped by a decent head with little retention but nice lace. Mouth is medium bodied, fills the mouth nicely and is clean and the carbonation is done nicely. Nice carbonation level. Wow is this drinkable! Hits a little sweet with nice roasty maltedness, gives a quick hop tingle then finishes a bit sour. This could be a major major session beer, somewhat befitting its purpose!

456 Yuengling Original Black & Tan United States Porter 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Almost no nose, perhaps a vague sweetness. Moderate light brown head with little lace atop a a dark brown body that is not quite opaque. Nice medium bodied mouth, good tingle, slick and clean. Flavor is crystal malts and moderate hops. Hits tart, goes sweetish with roasty malt goodness, finishes a bit sour, clan dry aftertaste with a hint of pine. Pretty nice effort and very good for the price.

457 Brooklyn Oktoberfest United States Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Very solid malt hit int he nose followed by pine and pepper, very nice nose! A very reddish deep copper transparent body is topped off by a nice beige head of medium retention with moderate lace and a lovely skim coat. Mouth is medium bodied with a delayed sting and is nicely slick without cloying, carbonation is spot on. Flavor takes a moment to develop in the mouth, there is a strong malted back bone with a surprising amount of fruity notes, tart apple and deep fig, follows nicely bitter and finishes a tiny touch sweet, only negative is a slight chemical taste to the finish.

458 Troutbrook Thomas Hooker Blonde Ale United States Cream Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Reviewing from memory, only had it on tap. Decent nose, a bit spicy and a bit fruity. Pale orange to medium amber color with so-so head, not much lace or retention. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, not particularly creamy, a bit slick. Tastes a bit like a whitbeir, I really thought there was wheat in it when I first had it. Its fairly sweet, finishes a bit sour and wet, has a little spice in in and some malt, I wonder if it has corn or rice? Not in any way spectacular but a decent flavor when the keg is fresh.

This is one odd Heffe! Nose of pine and lemon, i get no banana and no clove/corriander, maybe a little pepper. A bit on the pale side a foggy yellow body is topped by an OK white head that has poor retention and zero lacing. Mouth is thin which is OK for Hefe but it is also watery, not OK, could use more tingle and more slipperyness. Flavor...what flavor? OK you can taste lemmon and pine at first and then it goes a bit yeasty and finishes too sweet and almost grassy. I like my Hefe upfront and this is just timid to the core. I liked there Pils alot but this is a failure. OK its very drinkable if you are not expecting a Hefe, its Hefe-lite!

460 Gearys London Porter United States Porter 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sweet nose, choclate, prunes, brown sugar, a touch of hoppy pine. Frothy carmel colored head sits on top of opaque black body (with hints of ruby at the edges)and leaves moderate lace. Motuhfeel is medium bodied and a bit slick and maybe just a bit too fizzy. There is a lot of flavor in ths porter pretty solid malt backbone (i am guessing both toasted and crystal)starts bitter but hits chocolate and coffee pretty fast then goes almost baked grapefruit with cimamon and brown sugar, finishes much dryer than expected. A touch of alcohol in the aftertaste. NIcely down, although its the first porter I have drunk in perhaps 10 years, used to drink em up in Canada summers at a camp, but thats another story, remeber them being less hoppy than this.

461 North Coast Acme California Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

A malty nose with a hint of citrus and clove. A very nice off white head with excellent retention and decent lacing sits atop a clear pale copper colored body. Mouthfeel is medium and watery and perhaps under-carbonated. This beer is a let down, I really like their IPA a lot. There is almost no flavor to speak of, nothing bad but just not much taste at all. Thereis a bit of malt and a bit of hops and a grassy finish, with a slight sour aftertaste. EyeChart nails this one, its wishy-washy, better than macro-swill but just barely.

462 Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Talk about a mouthful of grapefruit! big nose of grapefruit and pine. Paleish honey colored body is night quite tanslucent iwth an offwhite head that is nice but goes away fast leaving a nice skim coat with yeasty spots and short-lived lace. Medium mouth that caosts nicely and is highly carbonated. I'm very fond of the taste it has great balance and moderate complexity. There is a good sweetness from the carmel malts and then a very strong bitter grapefruit and the finsh is very dry and very clean. This could be a MAJOR session brew!

463 Dogfish Head World Wide Stout United States Imperial Stout 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 10

Oh My God! didn't see ABV on the bottle but one sniff! Alcohol dominates the nose with black cherries, concord grape, and perhaps cassis, and some definate malt in the nose as well. Ruby black opaque body sits over a very minimal burnt umber head that goes away fast leaving a skim coat and a bit of lace. Mouth is medium bodied, slick, and more carbonation detected than is visually apparent; coats the mouth nicely. Taste is winey in a nice way, hits a touch bitter then goes sweet with a big alcohol burn, has a nice tratness towards the end, finish is suprisingly dry, and then leaves a really full and complicated aftertaste, almost like a mince meat pie but I actually like this. Real good burnt malt backbone on this oneThis could bring to mind Southern Comfort of perhaps Sloe Gin. Certainly NOT a session beer, bottle says it has a ridiculous amount of barley, not sure I know what that tastes like, I am having this for dessert and its yummy but takes a bit of getting used to. Not everyone's cup of tea a but a damn interesting experiment, I would like to see what it would taste like in a less sweet version, could they keep the 18% under control tatse-wise without quite so much sweetness? but then it would be a different beer! Hats of to DFH as usual.

464 Stone India Pale Ale United States IPA 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Big ole hops nose all piney goodness with hints of grapefruit and a bit of grass. Pours a clear deep gold with a frothy white head that does not last but leaves a nice skim coat. Decent lace. Mouthfeel is light but not watery with a nice level of carbonation. Flavor is sweet in the first hit, rapidly turns big time bitter, goes a bit sweet/sour and then finishes very bitter with a dry clean aftertaste. Good malt backbone on this one and much more complex and balanced than many "hophead" beers. A first rate west coast version on an IPA and one for the hop heads.

465 Dogfish Head ApriHop United States Fruit Beer 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Hmmm, Ok its got fruit in it so I guess its a fruit beer, but its much more. Nose has a ton of apricot when first poured with hints of hopy citrus notes that become more predominant after a moment or two. Also a lot of pine in the nose, its a very big nose and sweet. Pours a pale clear copper with decent off white head that dissipates fast with minimal lace. Mouth is slippery and medium bodied and quite fizzy in an OK way. Flavor is pretty well balanced lots of apricot but lots of hops too, kinda like magic hat but with out the sour, the hops and the alcohol keep the sweetness just this side of cloying. The is a peppery note from the hops as well and a bit more malt then one might expect. Alcohol present but masked well. Finish is quite dry and very balanced after the initial apricot sweetness. for an apricot beer this is well done and befitting of DFH. Nicely done.

466 Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout United States Coffee Stout 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Strong nose; floral hops, tootsie rolls, and coffee. A nearly opaque dark brown body with a decent off-white head with little retention and little lace. Mouth is full, round, creamy, light on the carbonation. Flavor is predominately sweet, over ripe figs, coffee, brown sugar and with a fairly heavy hops bite. Clean and dry in the aftertaste. A little bit like eating a charred marshmellow.

467 Hoegaarden Original White Ale Belgium Witbier 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nose is very floral, lots of esters, vanilla, clove, honey. A wonderful nose. Beautiful and fairly unique appearance; a foggy glass of pale sun; lemony yellow with a nice white head that looks like partially whipped egg yokes. Not great retention or lace but the skim coat remains and is lovely. Medium bodied in the mouth, slick and clean. Typical witbier flavor matches the nose, hits spicy of corriander and clove, goes very nicely bitter and leaves a slight clove aftertaste, really good balance of bitter and sweet. Gets a little soapy as it warms.

Lots of molasses, brown sugar in the nose, and the flavor. Nice deep redish brown body with good head and retention. Thick in the mouth, sweet in the flavor with fairly clean finish. One trick pony.

469 Southampton Abbot 12 United States Abbey Quadrupel 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Reviewed as night cap to a VERY long 4th of July so take with a grain of salt. This is a fantastic nose, winey and spicy, with serious carmel and malt scents and very nice hoppy spicyness; a very big nose with retention. Pours a serious greyish head that does not linger which sits over a foggy copper body. Mouthfeel is rich, heavy and full with nice carbonation. Flavor is sweet and surprisingly uncomplicated; lots of brown sugar/carmel flavor with some ripe fruit, perhaps fig, and a small hint of hops bitterness. Alcohol is totally masked. Somehow they have pulled off a very clean and dry finish which is a bit of a shock. Overall is hard to grade; this beer is not complex in the sense of developing various flavors but it excellently balanced throughout and the finish is just amazing; a major brew!

470 Anchor Steam United States California Common / Steam 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 9

Wow, haven't dropped an anchor since I stumbled upon beerpal and started rating brews, and what a delight. I was suprised to detect almost no hops in the nose, a very bready, malty sent. The beer poured a nice off-white head that did not last long and produced moderate lace over a very clear and copper body. Mouthfeel is light (not in a bad way) crisp and clean with moderate carbonation tingle. The flavor is uncomplicated, starts with a little carmel malt sweetness, hits a solid hops bite on the back of the palate, and follows with a touch of peppery spice and a bit of sour fruit. Aftertaste is fairly dry with a lingering sourness. Seems I am only giving this beer 7's but I think the overall gets an 8. Somehow its better than the sum of its parts. this is definately a beer that tastes like more, it could be a major session beer, I could pound a lot of these and i am not a pounder! I would also think this would be a great introductory beer to anyone who is only used to macro-swill. Re-rate: having a second one; my numbers came out to 3.6 and I think it deserves more. Just cahsed some beef taquitos with salsa verde and this brew is damn nice with Mex. but thats not the reason for the re-rate. On a scale against all beers 3.6 is reasonable but it seems that I really should factor in the quality within the style, maybe not the steam style so much as session brew style. So I am kicking up the overall and mouthfeel. The bottom line is there is just nothing wrong with this beer!

471 Sierra Nevada Summerfest United States Lager 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Nose is mild and bready with obvious hops aromatics of citrus, mostly lemon. This Pils style lager has a medium gold body with high clarity and pours a decent head with no retention or lacing to speak of. Mouthfeel is light and clean with nice fiz, the carbonation is light but well done. Flavor is also well done, light lemmony citrus, no skunk, a touch of grass, some nice sour notes of over-ripe fruit, a bit of peppery spice and a finish that is dry with a good touch of hoppy biterness.

472 Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout United States Imperial Stout 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A very floral noise which is something of a surprise, with some citrus and some fig, the nose is almost winey. They aren't kidding about "black" this stuff is opaque even with a bare 60 watt bulb behind it. Slowly develops a nice dark brown head that is sizable and lasts well (good job considering the Abv)Good lacing. Mouthfeel is creamy and full and a bit fizzy. Flavor is predominated with alcohol, its the first and last taste. I get quite a few complex flavors, concord grape, rum, strawberries, burnt coffee in the end taste, fairly clean finish with booze burn. There is also chocolate in the mid taste. There is a sourness to this brew as well, in fact sour and alcohol are the main tastes and there is also a bit metallic in the finish. This is a brave experiment that doesn't quite succeed, IMHO but it is worth tasting. I will probably cellar the four bottles I have left and check them out in a year or so, if it mellows a bit and loses the metallic taste it will get a higher rating. I have now noticed that BP is classifying htis as a Rauchbier and from the flavor I can understand that, the taste that I find metallic may well be a smoky flavor. The brewery itself classifies this as an Imperial Stout; they do mention specially roasted malts, perhaps this actually is a hybrid of rauchbier and stout, an interesting experiment.

473 Ridgeway Criminally Bad Elf United Kingdom English Barleywine 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Aroma of apples and oranges and a touch of pepper. Modest head off white with large bubbles sits atop a hazy ice tea colored body. Minimal head retention and lacing; not surprising in a Barelywine. Mouthfeel is thin and fizzy. Flavor is not bad, fairly complex. Definately a sweet sour battle going on with a slightly offputting aftertaste that is a bit astringent...perhaps chemically. Has some citrus notes and some yeast on the mid pallet. The alcohol is quite present.

474 Morland Old Speckled Hen United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Mild in the nose, sweet and sour and perhaps a bit cloying, malt bread pepper and citrus. Very nice very very long-lasting head is just off-white and foamy, sitting atop a pale copper body. Very creamy mouth with medium to heavy body. Flavor of ripe banana meeting a small dose of hops bitterness, and a sweet maple syrup flavor to boot. Alcohol is present as well. Eventaully goes a bit sour. Not the way I remember English bitters tasting in the 70's pubs in London, close but a bit heavier and more sour, unique.

475 Saranac Caramel Porter United States Porter 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

big nose on this brew. Toffee, figs, vanilla, and grapes settle into a very winey nose. A big dark beige head with good retention sits over a deep chocolate brown body with god and ruby highlights. Classic lacing. A very soft and full mouthfeel, smooth and velvety, a very sensual mouth. flavor takes some getting used to and may put some folks off, this is an unusual flavor. Slightly mindful of chocolate covered raisins, maybe even Dr. Pepper. this is a sweet brew but its very nicely balanced with traditional English hopping. A very nicely done, fairly complex beer I suspect it would marry well with a cheese fruit and cheese course. Probably not a session brew. RERATE (downwards slightly) 12/2/10 Head and lace not as good as previously, sweetness a bit cloying though finish is still fairly dry.
