351 Cottrell Mystic Bridge IPA United States IPA 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Pale nose that is very floral with just a hint of pine and lemon, lightly roasted malts come through the nose after it warms a bit. Long lasting big off white head with nice lace sits atop a cooper/orange body. Mouth is full and carbonation moderate to low. Not a lot of complexity here; quite bitter with a bit more malt then most IPA's, not surprising for a NE brewer. Tastes like a New England pale ale only a bit more bitter. Mild citrus in mid taste is quickly followed by a bitter finish and just a touch of funk and butter afterwards...New England all the way. Alcohol at 6% is well masked but there is a touch of warming at the end. Heck of a session brew for the hops-inclined.

352 Harpoon Octoberfest United States Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Very little nose, some malt and a wee bit of ripe fruit. Short lasting off white head with some lace sits atop a copper body. Mouth a bit watery, carbonation a bit fizzy. Has the idea of a Marzen but somehow is so much less in all respects, some malt but also tastes a bit grainy, tastes like a good Marzen watered down.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Yup it comes in a can, and its good! Uncomplicated nose of pine and grapefruit. Medium head sits atop a orange body. Nice sticky mouth. Very bitter and very grapefruit. Alcohol well masked, gets a bit sweet as it warms. More or less a one note IPA but its a good note!

354 Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Re-rate: 2023 not going to change the score but I sure do miss the old label. Some pine and citrus in the nose; apricot, rose petals, and grapefruit. Pour is gorgeous. Quite a pale amber body topped by a rocky, frothy head with great retention and good lace. Medium bodied slightly slippery mouth. Flavor is unique IMHO. With no malt in the nose this has a pretty strong malt backbone. Malt is neutral, neither toasty nor sweet. This beer is bitter! Great job using some hops for nose and others for bittering. The citrus and pine are not nearly as strong in the flavor profile as they are in the nose. Just a really big bitter clean finish with a hint of sour. Some peppery notes detected and once I thought I tasted coffee. Also some pineapple. And wheat, I taste the wheat. Alcohol is a significant part of taste profile. Did I mention fantastic lace? Did I mention bitter? How did they make this beer as pale as it is (all wheat.) Lagunitas never disappoints. This is an extremely well made brew! Rerate 1/21/13 I just adore this brew, there is a lot of pine and citrus in the taste and also some apricot ... wonderful stuff!

355 Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale United States Strong Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Classic hop nose of pine and lemon (yes I get thirsty whenever I use Pledge or Pinesol), is balanced with some malty notes ( I get maple syrup, your milage may vary. Dark copper body with hints of red topped by an offwhite foamy head with excellent lace. Mouth is nicely slick, full bodied, and carbonation level is excellent. This hoppy strong ale avoids being simply a mouth full of grapefruit, its much more piney/herbal with very big bittering that is nicely balanced with a midtaste of caramel malts, big malt profile hidden away here. The finish is ever so slightly sour and the alcohol is present. Some prunes and figs in this one. Lovely.

356 Pacifico Clara Mexico Pale Lager 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

Nose is minimal, grass and perfume hops notes, lavender or dissipated sweet-tarts. Average to poor head sits atop pale gold body. Watery mouth. Not much flavor, a little pissy, grass and skunk with some flavorless bitterness. Has perhaps a touch more character than Carona.

357 Elevator Three Frogs IPA United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nice IPA and a bit unique. Drank out of bottle so not to able to judge appearance or aroma. I suspect its a medium to dark copper with lots of hops in the nose. Mouth is medium to thick with excellent carbonation. Perhaps its just me but it hinted at a brown ale in the flavor profile but very nicely bitter with quite a bit of malt. ABU, not listed here, was I believe 7.8; it certainly had a kick to it though the alcohol was very well masked. I liked this beer a lot!

358 Berkshire Lost Sailor IPA United States IPA 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Pretty big nose on this one, sweet malts and bready yeast are rapidly overtaken by pine and citrus hops. Medium amber body with a big offwhite head, fair retention and lacing. Medium body with plenty of carbonation. A solid malt background stands up well to this well hopped (in the English style) brew. Hops are fruity and citrus, malt is a bit sweet, very tasty, very sessionable. Goes just a bit sour towards the aftertaste, almost some Belgium like flavor there, I wonder about the yeast used. A very nicely done English style IPA.

361 Victory Prima Pils United States Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

(airport brew made the price high) Grass and lemon and a bit of pine in the nose. Gonna be hoppy; appropriate for the style. Pours a light yellow clear body with a nice very white egg cream head that dissipates fairly rapidly but leaves quite nice lace. Mouth is close to full which it didn't look like, carbonation very nicely done. Flavor is a tug of war between tart, sour, and bitter all in a god way. Starts with a grass and a buried buttery under-note. HIts slightly honey in mid taste and then closes bitter with a tart/sour aftertaste. Perhaps more hoppy than many pils this is very nicely done! Bottom line, a VERY good American version of a Bohemian Pilsener. Above review was for draft, having had a bottle now I am knocking body down a bit, but still a very nice pils. 1/5/2016

362 Gordon Biersch Marzen United States Marzen / Oktoberfest 2.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

RDU airport berw. Pours a light reddish copper body that is clear, topped with minimal white head that leaves a skim coat and good lacing. Almost no nose. Light body, possibly a touch over carbonated.fizzy on the mouth Minimal but decent flavor. Some lightly toasted malts balanced with citrusy hops, starts sweet finishes a bit sour. Just a bit of charcoal in their somewhere. You could pound these except the carbonation.

363 Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye United States IPA 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Lots of doughy bread notes in the nose with a bit of hoppy pine and lemon. Clear medium copper colored body it stopped by a minimal offwhite head that maintains a skim coat and provides a bit of lace. Mouth is medium bodied a bit slippery and is low in the fiz but quite drinkable and just a touch creamy. Flavor not too complex, starts ever so slightly sweet then a significant bitter effect combines, and leaves a quite dry/bitter finish. Alcohol is present and warming. Aftertaste a bit astringent. Not a powerful flavor profile but an interesting take on Rye and IPA, some pepper notes in the flavor, not much (but enough for IPA style) malt, maybe bitter lemon in the finish.

364 Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Ale United States Spiced Beer 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Smells Belgium, must be the yeast. Lots of ripe fruit, banana, some clove and a bit of bread in the nose. Pours dark copper with nice white head and some lace. Full mouth, carbonation is spot on. This is a sweet beer, not overly hopped at all. Good carmel tasting malt background, some banana and clove but its mild, chillis barely detectable. Stars sweet finishes clean, alcohol very well masked. Gets a bit sour as it warms.

365 Terrapin Hopsecutioner India Pale Ale United States IPA 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

In Key West, 3rd beer after 36 hours with no sleep. Nose if very mild, too mild! Soft grapefruit, some pepper, balanced but too faint a nose. Nice medium amber body with moderate head and minimum lace, gee looks a lot like an IPA! Mouth is a bit thin but carbonation is nice. This tastes very much like a slightly watered down Hop Stoopid, and if I had ordered a knock off Hop Stoopid kit and brewed this I would be fairly pleased. The IBU's are low in my humble opinion, just not the bitter kick I expect from the name but still a very tasty brew. At 7.2 the alcohol plays a big part in this flavor, its present in the taste and there is a lovely warming effect afterwards. Profile is grapefruit with minimal malt backbone and minimal complexity. Still the sum of its parts may be better than expected. This one will mess you up!

366 Baxter Brewing Stowaway IPA United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Wow, there whole thing is everything in a can, and its not bad, no not bad at all. Aroma of Lemmon, a hint of Banana and a hint of tobacco. Medium copper body with a very nice full head that lasts and produces great lace. Good mouth, medium to slightly light, slippery and nice carbonation level. Flavor... a winner hops more present as bittering than as flavoring. Tastes really fresh, tastes the most like a home brewed beer of any commercial beer I have had. A lot of fresh green in the flavor ; must come from the double dry-hopping. This one tastes more bitter than the 69 IBU would lead you to suspect. Some grapefruit in the aftertaste, really solid malt backbone on this, almost too much for the style. Perhaps a hint of buttery like a good English Pale. I really really like this one! The 6.9% ABV is wickedly well masked.

367 Rogue Santas Private Reserve Ale United States Amber Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Some spice and malt in nose, but nose is faint, Decent copper color over nice head with good retention and not much lace. VERY dry in the mouth, not sure of the spicing but its like they suck the moisture out of your mouth, not unlike alum. Mouth is VERY thin. I'm not a fan of this flavor, mostly musty and drying. Not my cup of tea but hey, Rogue doesn't usually intend to appeal to the masses. Very hoppy bitter a bit of malt

368 Woodstock Inn Pigs Ear Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Nose of coffee, coal, and toffee, maybe a touch of pine, if you have ever had psoriasis this smells like most of the old coal tar ointments. Dark brown body , moderate to slight head leaves a decent skim coat with some malty indications. Mouth is fuzzy but not in good way (OK this is not my favorite style) and medium bodied that turns watery fast. Some high back of the mouth citrus hop notes present themselves right up front and get followed by a sour fruit flavor with some clinging sweetness. The end is tart and the aftertaste is a bit fruity. I'm scoring it as high as I can for a style I am not fond of.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Was looking for a Thanksgiving afternoon beer to set me up while I cook before serving the bird and the Saisons and thought I'd give this a try. Aroma is sweet malt and citrus, orange detected. Pours a medium copper body with minimal off white head and some lacing. Mouth is Ok, a bit under-carbonated and a bit thin. The Crystal malt is cloying with some carmel undertones. Has a bitter hit in the middle and finishes a bit too sweet. Drinkable sort of.

370 Magic Hat Hex United States Marzen / Oktoberfest 2.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Some hops in the nose, malt nose notably missing. Pours copper with minimal head, unlike most I got decent lacing, maybe because it was draught. Very thin mouth. Not a lot of flavor, really missing the malts, a bit bitter, finishes with a chemical taste (maybe the smoked malts.) Not a good oktoberfest and not really a good beer.

371 Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Reviewed with the disadvantage of being at the wife's HS reunion, at a bar, without a glass. Good nose,, grapefruit and malt, appearance well... it was in a bottle what can I say! (I'll guess an 8). Mouth was medium, well carbonated, and a bit chewy. Flavor, big ole grapefruit but with a very solid malt backbone (see aracauna's reveiew) a very solid IPA flavor, alcohol strong but very well masked. Really good effort here from a small brewery I never heard of before.

372 Berkshire Golden Spike Ale United States Kölsch 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Reviewed from memory, drunk during Hurricane Irene. Yeast and malt predominate in the nose. Very lager-like with a medium gold body and very nice white head with god retention and decent lace. Nice medium mouth with good carbonation level. Tastes like a softer version of Berkshire's Czech style pils even thought this is an ale, nice malt a bit nutty, some ripe fruit and a hint of hops citrus. A touch sweet in the middle with a dry finish. Another excellent beer from Berkshire.

373 Berkshire Czech Style Pilsner United States Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 4.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Wow, just wow! I'm not a huge lager fan but this is a wonderful beer. Nose hits with a lot of biscuit and then presents pepper and ripe dark fruit, perhaps banana and some citrus; orange and lemon, and there is a bit of vanilla there too, world class nose on this beer. Although the brew is unfiltered it presents a clear medium gold body topped with a nice eggwhites head that leaves a decent skim coat. Lace is minimal. A lot of carbonation on the mouth which is medium crisp and clean. Flavor is as complex as the nose (for a lager.) Very nice malt followed by a big Saaz pepper hit, some rich vanilla and buttery notes, followed by lemon and pepper. Leaves the pallet with a very clean dry finish. Had my first bottle of this yesterday, sitting on a friend's porch in a rocking chair watching the sun set over the green hills of CT and listening to the birds. This is an excellent American effort at creating a true bohemian style pils, first rate!

Mild nose full of grapefruit, pepper and a bit of pine. Pours a golden amber that is clear with a white head that has good retention and very nice lace. Mouth is medium with good fizz and slick. Flavor is for you hopheads, tons of grapefruit, a hint of malt, sweet and sour delight that finishes dry. Alcohol well masked. Finish is very dry and clean.

375 Captain Lawrence Fresh Chester Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Aroma, well had this in a wood fired pizza joint so it was tuff to tell, some pine, some malty sweetness. Pretty looking beer, average copper color, very nice head with very good lacing. Mouth is pretty full bodied and nicely slick with a fairly low level of tingle which is appropriate for the style. Flavor is buttery and musty which is again appropriate for the style. There is a (I think) stronger malt backbone to this then the brewer's description mentions, again appropriate to the style as it befits its English Pale birth line. It is more heavily hopped than an English Pale, some flavoring hops but predominately bittering hops. The finish if both bitter and slightly malty-sweet. This is very high on my list of American Pales, perhaps the leader.
