326 Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp Belgian India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

WTF is a "belgian-style IPA".... I had to find out. Nose is nice, orange and pine notes evenly balanced, good spice..pepper and cumin?... and a touch of sweetness from the malt bill, reminds me of honey...or maybe its just because this beer is beautiful in the glass, a medium honey-colored body is topped by an excellent frothy slightly -off-white head that is long lasting and has great lace. Ever so slightly cloudy with carbonation gently streaming up the sides, did I mention I love the look of this beer? Mouth is thickish and a bit creamy with a nice slickness and good tingle. I was scared of the flavor, what is a Belgian IPA and I am usually worried about ales "brewed with natural flavor"..I was picturing an IPA with a bunch of spices dumped into it, thank god its not. There is a sweetness to this IPA and it is not as hoppy as say, a West Coast hophead IPA, but its credentials are solid. Fruitier than most IPA's slightly reminds me of Hat #9's apricot but not nearly that fruity. The fruit and sweetness are in the front of the taste and are almost immediately countered with a good bitter hit, not flowery hops, not earthy, the orange is there but subtle. The Chambly yeast is, I suspect, what gives this its unique profile, pretty unusual in an IPA, it adds some spice and a round flavor found often in wits, a subtle play on a farmhouse flavor. Yes I am loving this!!!! Its bringing together my two favorite profiles, IPA and Saison and doing it damn successfully! Good grief I am shocked that this subtle brew is going to end up as my highest rated beer! This beer is a whole new world for me.

327 Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot Ale United States Brown Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

This is very good ale! Nose is sweetish with lots of malt and significant hops, red/brown/mocha body topped with a nice foamy tan head and decent lace. Mouth is medium and creamy with very nice carbonation. Taste is rich and deep, lots of sweet malt and well hopped finish, reminds me a bit of a tamer version of their brown sugga. Lovely brew!

328 Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Very little happening in the nose. Light copper body with a white, moderate head that leaves a bit of lace. Mouth is medium bodied and a touch under-carbonated for my tastes. Malts are a bit on the sweet side, some carmel, hops are citrus and pine, not much spice. Finish is a bit sticky and sweet. Overall a fairly mild APA but well brewed and very sessionable, and available in the only smoking bar at the Atlanta airport (concourse A).(airport pricing) re-rate on draft this time hitting the spot on a hot and muggy evening not sure what was going on before when I reviewed it from the airport in Atlanta but damn this is really tasty salad hop character a little hint of wheat body is just fine leaving decent lace completely drinkable just be a spot on

329 Bass IPA United States English Pale Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Good strong nose, citrus (orange?) pepper and pine and some surprising sweet malts. Unusual reddish copper body (for an IPA) topped with decent short offwhite head leaving good lace. Mouth is medium and dry and slightly under-carbonated. Flavor..is there rye in malt bill? It is reminiscent of bass (admittedly not my favorite brew) fairly hoppy, interesting balance and flavor plays going on. Hits a bit astringent (making me think of rye) and then sweetens in mid flavor, not fruity but perhaps a bit of candy, ands dry and astringent with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Alcohol is part of the flavor complex. I wonder about the scores here, as an IPA (so labeled on the bottle) I would give it lower numbers than as BP's EPA listed here. I like the complexity and balance, pretty interesting brew. Rerate 2/20/2014 Downgrading , nose is perfumy, mouth is thin, malts are still candy, body is missing, hops minimal for even a EPA let alone an IPA.... what was I thinking?

330 Terrapin Rye Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Malt and rye in the nose and some sweet flowers. Pours a pale copper with so so head that provides OK lace. Good mouth, medium and a bit chewy, would prefer more carbonation. Rye predominates in the taste, with hops at the end, all good but this beer needs more complexity; needs something sweet in the middle and a little more hops for flavor, the hops are mostly bittering. Could be an interesting brew but just misses.

331 Avery India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I might be stuffy but I am only getting a mild nose, hint of citrus, probably orange. Pours a light amber body with moderate short-lived head and decent lacing. Good mouth medium bodied and slightly creamy, carbonation is decent, I would not mind a bit more. Fairly hoppy in flavor most of the flavor is in the back end. Some orange, maybe some tobacco, a nutiness, strong malt backbone for an IPA, this one is close to English Pale. Nice bitterness to the finish. I like this beer although its a bit odd for an IPA. Alcohol well masked. RERATE 15 MINUTES LATER: This it the rare IPA that really blossoms after it warms a bit. Lots of fruit and flowers, how lovely to have an IPA that is quite bitter WITHOUT the standard big mouth of grapefruit, and with such a solid malt undertone. This one is aces! A testimony to a brewer that really understands the ingredients and how to achieve balance.

332 Henry Weinhard's Woodland Pass IPA United States IPA 1.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 3

IPA light...maybe...at best??? Faint nose is more like a pils then an IPA. Pours medium gold body with shot-lived white head that disappears rapidly leaving no lace to speak of. Mout is watery and the carbonation is fizzy without being nice. Flavor is of processed white sugar with a touch of skunk in mid taste and some chemical ending. Sweet, hoppless, and tasting of additives, this has nothing to do with an IPA and since the brewer's description is so antithetical to the actual product I will grade this even more harshly. Crap beer. Hey, Full Sail doesn't even list any of their "Henry Weinhard's " brews on their website, can't say as I blame them!

333 Samuel Smith Organic Chocolate Stout United Kingdom Chocolate Stout 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Oh My, the nose just screams chocolate, some ripe fruit (their yeast) sends this to Kalua or Brandy Alexander, maybe some cinnamon, not a nose for the faint of heart. Nose is long -lasting. Pours opaque very dark brown body with minimal head (point off for this) that is beige and leaves a bit of short-lived lace. Mouth is thin (I seem to be hitting a lot of thin-mouthed stouts lately) and perhaps a touch under-carbonated. (Interesting that Samuel calls this a malt beverage with natural flavor added, one wonders where in the brewing process this happens, does chocolate go in just before bottling?) I am going to let this warm in the glass for 10-15 minutes before grading the flavor, cold its chocolate and perhaps raspberry with decent bittering. OK... very poor balance, chocolate is overwhelming and tastes like an extract, not like quality chocolate. Some bittering and some citrus-like notes buried in the crappy chocolate taste. Just tastes artificial. cloyingly sweet top to bottom.

334 Two Roads Road to Ruin Double IPA (Road 2 Ruin Double IPA) United States Imperial IPA 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Well they kicked it up to 8% but the rest of this review is still pretty accurate 8 years later.Moderate nose of pine and orange, fairly standard. Medium amber body topped by nice white head with goo lace. Mouth is medium, nothing special. As the brewer says, not much malt, lots of hops., kinda lacking in flavor but strongly unflavored bitterness. Fairly neutral in taste, not much flavoring hops, not citrus or floral in flavor. A bit buttery for an IPA. Finish is super dry and slightly medicinal. this brewery is close to making good beers (I've had their Saison) but they just miss. need to work the recipe and get serious. At 7.2 "Double IPA is a bit of a stretch, alcohol present but mild.

335 Founders Breakfast Stout United States Coffee Stout 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Having a late night breakfast, best time for that isn't it. I am not getting much coffee in the nose, some chocolate, some sweet fruit, chocolate covered strawberry? Aroma does not last long. Opaque very dark brown body topped with carmel colored head that is nice and frothy with good retention and very good lace. Mouth is a bit think for my taste, not creamy and certainly not something that " you can drink this ale with a fork." Carbonation is nice, just wish it had more body. Flavor is quite nice. Good bit of sour fruit, its the predominate flavor in mid taste. Some nice hop bitterness in the front end, hints of chocolate towards the end with a dry finish that hints at coffee. No flavors as big as the brewers description above would indicate. Alcohol very well masked with just a slight warming after. Don't get me wrong this is very tasty. Actually pretty vinous. A sweet brew with a dry finish. Very very drinkable, perhaps too much so, could be dangerous. Better as it warms, coffee predominates, pretty complex, pretty nice brew.

336 Ithaca Flower Power India Pale Ale United States IPA 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Very floral nose lilacs and lemon and pepper. Really a nice nose! Pours a medium gold body that is clear and topped with a decent white head with fair retention and some lace. Mouth is medium with very nice carbonation and a touch creamy. First taste is bitter followed by a nice balance of sweetness (from their yeast they say) and grapefruit. Finish is fairly dry with the bitterness kicking back in. Not complex. Alcohol totally masked. Very nice IPA, if this is really 8% what is the cut off point for an Imperial?

337 Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Oak Aged Beer United Kingdom English Strong Ale 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Nose is predominately whisky with some bread, some coffe notes as it warms. Me no like. Pours a decent whitish head that is quite short lasting. Body is a dark clear copper, almost no lace. Mouth is watery. Flavor is predominately sweet. Maple syrup notes with a fair bit of malt and a sweet whiskey finish. How do you rate flavor on this odd-ball whisky/oak strong ale? I think you say that this is NOT what a strong ale should taste like, add 1 pt since its odd and give it a 6. Will not drink this again. And its over-priced.

338 New England Sea Hag IPA United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Wow, love the nose! Floral lavender, lemons, pine and pepper, and its a big nose too. Cloudy (whats up with that, this is the third otherwise delightful IPA's I have had in a can that are cloudy?) pale amber body is topped by a big frothy white head of medium retention ad nice lace. I hate grading an otherwise decent IPA down for being cloudy but what can I do? Mouth is nice, slightly creamy spot on with the carbonation, and slippery. Flavor follows the nose, touch of flowery sweetness with a good malt backbone, very nicely bittered, dry tart clean finish. Very nice IPA, nothing unique but a classic IPA, and almost in the WC style from this New England brewer. Just noticed crud in bottom of glass, not right for an IPA! knocking it down a bit more/

339 Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Nice nose here, initially all malt but after a moment lots of citrus and pine hops (maybe a bit too much for a Pale Ale. Clear light amber body that is almost pinkish somehow (odd that)! Topped with a frothy white head with OK retention and quite nice lace. OK, its tastes a bit more hoppy and sweet then I like my Pales. A bit thin in the mouth, perhaps a bit under carbonated. First nose after pour spoke of a proper malt backbone but I don't taste it much here. Actually less malt presence than I would expect in a good PA. Slightly off medicinal aftertaste. Maybe tastes like a can (and I have had some great beers in cans!) Canned less than 2 months ago so that should be fairly fresh. I'm giving this beer bad marks for; not really being a Pale Ale, more like a watery PA, odd color, watery mouth, off taste. I wonder if I just got a bad one, can't wait to read other reviewers I respect here. Rerate 6/7/14 as above but I now get a good malt backbone, still a bit too hop-predominant for the style, but damn good drinking. Carbonation level is spot on this time and not medicinal. If htey called this an IPA I would kick the marks up even a bit more.

340 Sixpoint Resin United States Imperial IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

One of the strongest noses I have encountered, pop the top on this can and smell pine and citrus instantly for 2 feet away. Nose also includes some floral notes and perhaps vanilla. I love the look but again, like yesterday's review of Finch's Threadless IPA the body is cloudy perhaps chill haze? so will have to knock a few points off of this orangish amber body topped with decent white head with moderate lace. Mouth is medium bodied, slippepry, and spot on carbonation; very nice! Flavor is big, balanced and 9% alcohol fairly well masked. starts a touch sweet, notes of tobacco, sour citrus, some bread, quite bitter, very dry finish. 103 IBU is strong, this one is for hop heads, spectacular IIPA! There are some quite low scores here mentioning weak nose, not hoppy. I don't know whats going on; reviewers or brewer has quality control problem.

341 Finch's Threadless IPA United States IPA 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose is pine, citrus, and perhaps a bit of anice, some flowers, some nice bready malts. This is really a pretty pour! Medium gold body that is NOT clear (OK wrong for the style but really pretty none the less) is topped by a thick, creamy dead white head which leaves lovely lacing. If this was not a style that should be clear I would give it a 10 here but, although it pains me, am marking it down to an 8 on appearance. Wow, this is a very well-crafted IPA; nothing over the top but not a watered down presentation either, more or les spot on except perhaps a bit, just a bit, sweet. Although in a can, very reminiscent of DFH 60 on draught. I am following a very spicy mexican-thai inspired shrimp stir fry and this is absolutely delightful! OK, mouth is medium to full, creamy, slippery very nice on the carbonation. Flavor hits sweet malts, goes a bit floral and then citrus, nice bitter finish that is neither dry nor sweet. Some apricot and some nuttiness and some sour grapefruit. This is getting low numbers here, I think its killer!

342 Founders Porter United States Porter 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Nose is vinous toffee and some orange citrus notes and toasty malt. Pours an opaque dark brown body that is topped with a pale carmel colored had that is medium and leaving a nice skim coat and a hint of lace. Mouth is medium, creamy, and chewy, nicely carbonated. Carmel malts in the flavor are a bit overwhelmed by piney hops some hint of ripe fruit, a dash of sweetness, and the finish is fairly dry and hints of bitter chocolate. Interesting to try to determine the diff between stout and porter, way back stout meant stronger porter. Nowadays they are brewed in so many different ways, I guess I would say this is just a bit thiner than a stout. Fun article on this topic here http://www.beerconnoisseur.com/porter-versus-stout This is pretty decent stuff. I do like my stouts and porters to intensify as the warm slightly, and this one is becoming a bit well, a bit more of all of the above. Nicely done.

343 Dogfish Head Chicory Stout United States Stout 3.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Zero nose detected, here we go again, whats up with this, two nights in a row 2nd beer had no nose. Ok minute later nose developing. Floral hops, pepper, hint of sweet malt, maybe a hint of chicory, prunes. Dark brown almost opaque body, frothy short lived carmel colored head, moderate lace. Mouth is too thin, carbonation OK. Not a real special flavor profile going on here. MIght get better as it warms. Very little in the front end, follows with a bit of bitter chicory flavor, then chocolatey malt on the end with a slightly sweet finish. Like DFH a lot, not impressed with this.

344 Blue Point Hoptical Illusion United States IPA 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nose is minimal and fades fast, whats there is standard. Pours a deepish gold body with a fair head that leaves decent lace. Mouth is OK, could have some more tingle and is medium bodied. Flavor is mild for an IPA but well balanced, alcohol well masked. Hops are a bit perfumy, cloying at first but OK after a while, malt is solid, finish is dry and bitter. A decent sessionable east coast IPA with just a slight medicinal taste. 2/3/2016 more hops bittering and a hint of licorice in the finish.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Almost zero nose, very odd. NIce copper body topped with off white foamy head that lasts and leaves lovely lace. Mouth is slick and medium to full in the body, almost chewy. Flavor is fully bitter, sweet kick towards the end with a dry bitter finish. Some pine not much citrus, malts are maybe a bit roasted, very nice IPA except aroma missing entirely. Alcohol present as would be expected in an Imperial. (rerate a few minutes later, I am kicking it up a tad, the lack of nose should not have made this score as low as it did and kudos for giving us the malt and hops bill.) What the heck is going on, everyone else got a decent nose on this, I got nada and its not my nose 2nd beer this eve and first one had nice nose..... my review is more recent, change in recipe??? just an off batch?

346 Two Roads Worker's Comp Saison United States Saison 1.8

Aroma: 2 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 3

If you have even the smallest soft spot in your heart for Saisons do not taste this Shite! As this is brewed in my home state and as they have several other brews that have just appeared at my local vendor and I am a big fan of Sasions, I had so hoped this would be tasty but alas! Ok, thats out of the way so on with the review. The pale resemblance to the nose of a good Saison is the best part of this beer; clove predominates and not much else there. Terrible Terrible appearance; a pale yellow body (reminiscent of Bud, Pabst, etc) is not topped at all; no head, almost dead still in the glass, zero lace Mouth is very light, some tingle, not slippery. Flavor is clove followed by clove and finishing with clove. No malt, tiny bit of hops bitterness, the initial taste is close to right for a Saison but thats all there is; no barnyard funk, no grass, no fruit, no sour...OK that might rate a three but this gets a two because it ends with an awful chemical medicinal nastiness that is just awful. (yes I think this beer sux!) My local supplier has two more of their brews which, as I grabbed this six, I had hoped to review in the future. Now the thought of buying 6 of anything from these folks scares the hell out of me. Maybe I can talk them into selling me a mixed 6. Oh yes,one more thing, a Saison at 4.8 ABV....WTF!

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Very floral nose, very English Pale Ale nose; nice malts some vanilla slight pepper. Nice pale copper body toped by decent head with moderate lace. Slightly thin mouth. Flavor is like a very good IPA that has been ever so slightly watered down; bitter is a bit weak, malts are Ok, not a whole lot happening but nothing bad either. Sessionable and perhaps a good beer to intro a macroswiller to IPA land.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Really strong nose of grapefruit and orange and pepper with a hint of the grain bill coming through.Lovely looking brew, very clear pale amber body toped by skim coat that lingers and leaves moderate lace. Mouth has great carbonation and is slippery and fullish. Nice complex flavor with alcohol playing a large roll. VERY bitter, the citrus in the nose is not as present in the taste, maybe some vanilla, lots of resin, and some rawish grain, perhaps the best Imp IPA i have had, wish I knew the ABV, its up there! Not rerating it yet but very different now in 2014. Boy not clear but foggy, sour taste, not sure but might be bad bottle.

349 Gritty McDuffs Maine's Best IPA United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

I notice that there are reviews of Gritty McDuff's IPA from 5 or so years ago, suspect that this is a name change, and perhaps also a recipe change. Nose is standard IPA, mostly citrus and pine with very little else. A medium to darkish amber body is topped by an nice off white head that has good retention and leaves lovely lace. Mouth is fairly full bodied for an IPA, carbonation perhaps a bit low but acceptable. Good flavor on this one, nothing complicated but pretty spot on for the style, some pepper, some lemon, some pine, and big ole bitter finish. For an eastern IPA this one is hoppy! Nice job from a brewery with a silly name and very drinkable even for hop heads.

Nose similar to Duvel, lots of funk some grass. Described as a pale gold but I would say a pale amber with rocky white head and medium lace. Medium mouth, creamy, and a bit lacking in carbonation. Sweet and sour flavor with not much complexity, decent session brew.
