In the fall of 2003, Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters, a local Whitehorse coffee company that roasts their coffee fresh here in the north, approached us with an idea. Zola Dore (the Yukon Bean Queen) was enjoying a home brewed espresso stout she was producing at a local U-brew when inspiration struck, “Let’s work together to produce this beer in bigger volumes”. Sometimes brilliance can be confused with insanity and espresso stout beer certainly lends itself to insanity, but several awards and hundreds of enthusiastic reviews later and it’s clear this creation is a winner. To say that our brew team outdid themselves is perhaps not going far enough. By the time they finished creating, we had a beer with eight different malts (that’s right, Alice, eight malts) not to mention oatmeal and, of course, espresso coffee. The result is a beer that is fine as frog’s hair, full bodied yet smooth, rich with coffee aromas and flavours without ever losing sight of the fact that it’s beer.

Found this one at the Casino SAQ in Hull, Quebec. Pours a real dark brown colour with little red highlights. The head is small, but light brown and gives out decent creamy lacing. Molasses aromas with a touch of roasted grains, nuts and lots of dark fruits. The coffee show up in the taste, but very lightly. More roasted malt and hops, without being too bitter. Not sure if the coffee is not showing much because this could be an older bottle (looks like it is showing Feb. 2012 as best before date, but the notches are not precise). Still, drinkable.

This poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma contains some espresso, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is a bit sweet with some more espresso, chocolate, and milk. The palate is a little bit thin. Overall pretty good but not great.

I cleary had a bad bottle reading everyone eles reviews. Soapy, acidic, lemongrass, no coffee at all, nothing even stouty beyond the dark color and the burnt grain charateristics. Watery, yucky, overall an average brew, but really not something I would buy again if the second bottle was like this.

This is a typical stout. It pours a dark brown, almost black with almost no head. The aroma is definitely coffee with some roasted malt backing it up. The flavour was very strong, again a coffee flavour up front with some licorice tones on the end

Pours wtih a dark brown to black body toped by a light brown, medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet and roasty wtih nice coffee notes and a touch of bitterness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

absolutely great beer...except for one thing... personally i think its a bit too strong with the expresso. ok moving on... pours black as night with a creamy tan head that lasted and had good lace. smell of expresso, roasted malts, smoke, coffee. taste is great, if the expresso was cut back (just a lil bit mind you) it would be one of the top beers. still non the less a great brew!

Purchased in the 1 liter bottle with ceramic stopper/wire bail. Poured an impressive deep dark opaque cola color that defies light to pass through the glass. Rich tan cap that lasts and lasts. Aromas of sweet caramel malts, cocoa, fresh cappuccino and spices. Starts silky and sweet then builds to an oily mouth feel where the hop bitters and chunky cocoa-coffee tastes overpower the sweet malts. The finish is glorious....dry with lingering coffee/chocolate-dry after taste...then the warming feel of the 6.2%ABV...a wonderful stout...and I'm not partial to stouts.... keep it cellared for cold winter nights. Possibly the best flavored stout in Canada and certainly one of the best in North America.....I'd stack it against alesmith speedway any day.

Yummy!! Just as good as I remembered. Beer poured black with a dark brown head. The thing that threw me off about this beer is it had a very dirt like smell, high quality dirt mind you none of that normal garden stuff but high quality compost. There was also a strong coffee smell but that wasn't unexpected. On to the first sweg........ holy silky smooth Batman, this stuff is thick and creamy very soft feeling, it feels like my mouth has been upholstered in velvet. The taste hits you with a double barel blast of coffee and I'm detecting a strawberry cream in the back ground (Beerchronic disagrees with me) very full flavor. Me likes this beer a lot.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small brown head. Aroma is pure coffee with subtle roasted malt. Taste is definitely dominated by the coffee with pure creamy roasted malt and light bitter ending. Wow, I’m quite impressed with that one and I don’t think I ever had a beer with so much coffee in it. Body is above average but could be fuller. Alcohol is also a bit low and I think the beer could have benefited from a higher ABV. Definitely the best beer from this brewery and impressive considering the no-man land it is coming from.

1 Litre flip top bottle. Pours dark, almost black, full tan brown head. Foam recedes but doesn't disappear, leaves sticky lacing. Hold up to the light, and only the slightest touch of red shines through the edges. The aroma is total coffee, not just the coffeeish notes in other stouts. Full rich flavor, roasted malt, smoke, and chocolate tastes to go with the coffee. Full-bodied, with mix of sweetness, coffee, and crisp finish. I want to finish every big meal with this instead of a coffee. I think I have a new favorite!
