Our First GABF Gold Medal Winner (1998). The Biter is a smooth malty oatmeal stout balanced by flavors of roasted barley with chocolate malt. Gentle bittering but generous aroma is given by the popular English hop, East Kent Golding. This gentle stout will be attractive to anyone who likes a full-flavored beer, including hard-core connoisseurs of stout. The image was developed to symbolize the alluring, if not sinister character of the Black Widow Stout!

A solid oatmeal stout but unfortunately Road Slush has me expecting more from the style. This one is good though, nice raosty grain aroma on a dark brown beer. A roasty flavor with a clean finish, dry and chewy like it should be.

Pours dark black colour with a medium sized tan head. Dissipates quickly leaving a trace of brown lace around the glass. Aroma has some burnt toast and dirt notes to it. Taste comes across a bit too metallicy for my liking. Roasted malts with some dark chocolate on top of everything. A little espresso bean flavour as well. Which it wasn't so darn metallicy otherwise i think i would rated this higher.

Typical deep black appearance, with a thin tan head with brief retention, and some lacing. Malty aroma, with the Goldings peeking through. Fragrance of chocolate rises as the brew warms a little. Medium mouthfeel, somewhat creamy and nicely carbonated. Flavor is malty, chocolatey, and mildly hoppy, but has some odd note to it, kinda metallic. Perhaps the water? An alright oatmeal stout, but there are many others I much prefer.

Dark, dark beer. Frothy head. Rivals some of the "best" stouts I've had in aroma and flavor, being quite typical and true to the style. Lacks where the best stouts excel, and that is body and mouthfeel. For its bitterness, maybe too sticky , more like a porter, but certainly creamy. One of the best stouts I've had from a bottle, and a very cool label.

This Montana brew has a picture of a black widow on the label and a blurb on the bottle about it being brewed with the finest hops and grains and only a hint of spider. Pretty cheesy. As far as stouts go, this one is very tasty without much bitterness. It's very easy-drinking...maybe too much so for the style. I would have this often if it was easier to get.

Dark black color. Small tan quickly diminishing head. Aroma is espresso, chocolate and malt. A light to medium bodied Oatmeal stout. Malts are roasted, with chocolate and coffee flavors. Smooth taste, but I was expecting a thicker bodied beer. Well balanced and it has a nice dry finish. Nice beer. IT shard not to like a beer that on the label quotes îThis ale is brewed with the finest hops & malted grains with only a hint of spidersî Mouthfeel is a little thin. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

A dark stout with a dark head. The aroma is of roasted grains and the flavor is mostly toffee, with a bit of oats. Smooth and warming. Alcohol somewhat present.

Sampled from bottle. Pours pitch black with a generous tan head and thick lacing. Aroma is malty with medicinal note. Coffee and fruit in the flavor. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Clean finish for an oatmeal stout.
