RYE SAISON - a delicious Belgian farm ale brewed with a portion of Rye grain and a classic Belgian saison yeast. Yes, the time of year when young brewer's thoughts turn to ... fruity, juicy, slightly funky-but-in-a-good-way Belgian yeasts! Yep, that's how you spell L O V E to a brewer. Soon, Fed Ex will deliver an active culture of a Belgian saison yeast, to be pitched into a sweet concoction of pale, Vienna, wheat, and rye malts. There, it will ferment at unbelievably high temperatures (95 F instead of our usual 68 F) until the beer is infused with peppery aromas and a wonderful juicy-fruit tartness.

A copper color with white head. The aroma is nice with some apricot, brown sugar, citrus, and rye. Flavor is somewhat bitter with caramel, brown sugar, citrus, and rye. Some bitterness in the aftertaste. Overall I dig it.

Received from Lou (muchas gracias!!). A really well made saison that seemed to hit nearly every note that I enjoy in a saison. The nose was a little reminiscint of a hefeweizen with lots of banana and clove in the aroma. But after awhile, that kind of goes away and some honey/apple juice notes with a light funky character...almost like green apples. Flavor had some strong notes of apples, honey, and citrus. Medium sweetness kind of keeps this from higher ratings territory. I do enjoy a really dry saison, but this was nice. -

Pours a nice clear amber with an average fluffy white head. Crisp, malty aroma has fruity and rye tones and a yeasty hint. Malty aroma has a decided rye component plus some sweet fruity tone and just a hint of honey. Texture is fairly smooth with a strong fizz. Overall, not too shabby.

Nice mix of dry, gritty, rye and spicy yeast. A fair amount of clove with banana and lots of grass. The rye is dominant within this one, and adds a great twist to a classic style. Some hint of citrus and a tinge of undercover barnyard round out this delicate treat. Sent by Louis, thanks friend.

Thanks, Lou! What complexity with this one... Pours clear to slightly hazy copper-orange with a faint head that has phenomenal lacing. Aroma is deeply intriguing with a tartness reminiscent of a green apple Jolly Rancher - and a bit of that flavor too - with yeasty malt and smoke (maybe that was the rye - but no joke a nice smokey aroma... damn, that aroma... Even and smooth to the pallette. Flavors match the aromas and combine for an absolutely delightful experience. Definitely Belgian, but maybe enough Tennessee to help it along its way.

Nashville pick up this week: beautiful nearly clear copper pour with tight but thin white head that leaves spots of lacing. Light carbonation. Funky aroma, in a good way, with a Belgian yeasty, tart apple, light Juicy Fruit gum, sweetened malts and kiss of rye. Taste is funky too, but again, in a good way, aforementioned tart and sweet apples, Belgian yeasties, Juicy Fruit gum, hint of banana, lightly sweet malt and hint of promised rye. Enjoyable brew from Yazoo - different for them, but a good effort and tasty.

The fifth anniversary brew is average at best. A new style for Yazoo according to the waitress, but they missed the boat. It pours a cloudy gold, typical saison pour. The aroma is slightly earthy with a hint of rye and tart fruits. The tartness is definitely noticeable in the flavor profile.
