The full body and malty flavor make Widmer Oktoberfest an ideal beverage for the Fall season. As the style dictates the hopping is delicate enough to allow the malty character to dominate, yet still provides a floral aroma and finish.

Most marzens get about the same range of ratings from me...this is no exception. Pretty much the norm for this style. Medium caramel malty, lighter carbonation mouthfeel. Easy drinking and worth the 1/2 off on clearance. The aroma could be point higher I guess if fresh, but I am guessing this is about 8-10 months old already based on the price and time of year (Summer '12) that I got this.

Surprising found this at Chameleon's in Mount Vernon, IA. "Pours a clear amber with a thin white head that disappears immediately. Smell of sweet malts, with just a hint of hops. A little watered down. Taste has malt, caramel, and some hops with just a tad of bitterness. I would say this would be a very average Octoberfest; nothing stands out.

Pours a clear amber with a thin white head that disappears immediately. Aroma of sweet malt, earthiness, and a hint of fruity hops. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery. Flavor has malt, caramel, grassy and fruity hops (maybe a bit of sourness in the finish too). Very good; one to seek out each year.

It poured a deep amber body with very little carbonation that led to a thin, rapidly shrinking head. Aroma of roasted malts, flavor also of roasted malts and toffee, sweet with a dry hop bite aftertaste. Overall it is just one step above the average marzen.

Pours with a frothy, one-finger thick, light tan colored head that fades away fairly quickly. The beer is a brilliantly clear, deep reddish amber color. The aroma has a sweet, fruity, malty presence that is immediately noticeable. Notes of cherries and raisin mix with malty notes of caramel, toffee, and a light toasted grain note. Perhaps a touch of citrus character is found here and joins with the berry note, both of which seem to at the very least be hop accented. Yes there is a definite hop presence here, as well as the aforementioned components there is also a light menthol like note and perhaps a touch of pine.
The beer is sweet and fruity up front; both hops and malt contribute to this perception. I get notes of raisins, cherries and sweet tangelos. There is an almost cough-syrup type fruitiness here; a hint of that fake fruity cherry note that is often a component of cough-syrup. A solid bitterness runs throughout, along with a sharp pine and menthol note, it tries to balance the sweet & fruity notes. This definitely strikes me at times as a good example of an Alt. It has a nice maltiness to it, mostly caramelized but a light, almost roasty note is here in the finish as well. And the fruitiness is certainly characteristic of many a traditional German Alt. The body has a certain heft to it and this beer does have a lingering mouth coating character to it that is quite nice. A pretty tasty beer and if it was not for that fake fruity note I would say it is down right good. -

This marzen pours a deep orange gold color from a 12 oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is mild slightly malts a touch fruity and a touch sweet. A medium to light bodied octoberfest marzen. Malts are caramel and sweet. Hops are slightly bitter, touch of floral and earthiness. Kind of thin and watery, fairly flat carbonation and bland. Drinkable, but non memorable. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and mooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
