Having grown up drinking this beer, I'm biased! Rich, dark ale just a tad lighter than stout. Sweet with coffee undertones and a very smooth finish. Much better than the chocolate-tasting porters that you get in the USA.

Toohey's Old has a rich and thick texture and a strong flavour, reminiscent of Guiness and other such dark beers. Extremely good beer for the cheap price. Highly recommended.

One of my favourite beers, and such a bargain! This beer is ridiculously cheap, for something that oozes much more quality than other mass produced beers in a similar price range. Very smooth, and quite sessional for a dark ale. More of a light porter, than the Alt that Tooheys seem to imply it is, but a wrong classification doesn't take away from what is a great beer. The aroma is light, with slight hints of dark chocolate and coffee, and the flavour is quite creamy and smooth for a beer that has quite a light body and mouth feel. A minor downer, when being considered as a porter, is that the beer is possibly overly carbonated. However this could be seen as a positive, as it does seem to add to the beers sessionability.

Foamy beige head, quite carbonate. Some lace. Dark browny amber... almost cola-like Sweet, caramel smell...almost cola-like Taste of molasses, roasted grain. Sweet yet refreshing...almost cola-like A recurring theme ? To be honest, it did seem to have cola-like qualities, albeit a heavier body, with some toasty, malty characters. Not much bitterness or hop flavour.

It's called Old Black Beer, but it's nothing like either Alt or Schwartz styles. My impression is much more like Porter. Pours a dark ruby brown, and despite a very fizzy mouthfeel, manages only a thin tan head. Aroma is nuts and chocolate. Flavor is coffee and burnt malt. Mouthfeel is thinner than the aroma would suggest. Aftertaste is quite bitter. In all, a nice change of pace, but not spectacular.

Bottle. Dark ruby brown with a slim tan head. Aroma is nutty, malty and chocolate. Pretty highly carbonated, some caramel and coffee in there. Bit acidic, bit of a watery mouthfeel, but overall not too bad.

I tried this beer for the first time at a winter pot-luck in Tasmania with friends. Excellent both in a bottle and from the tap. The beer exhibits limited aroma and a decent, yet subtle, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Tastes slightly of coffee and chocolate. Tooheys old is also carbonated to a greater extent than one might expect from an ale this dark and it surely is miles away from a stout. Old pours a beautiful, almost opaque, deep brown with a creamy off-white head. Also of note are its excellent value. You will often find it for less or at comparable prices to more mainstream beers. Definitely the best in the toohey's lineup.

its weird how a big brewery makes cheap crap all the time then out of no where comes a cheap quality dark ale ! maybe i am favouring this brew a bit cause im a big fan of ozzie dark ales, but this beer is deep, coffee flavours, slightly burnt with a shallow aroma of stout like qualities. its costs bugger all too . only problem i reckon is its a bit piss weak on the alco.
