Originally developed in the late 1700's, British breweries would send beer via sail to the troops and British expatriots in India. Problem was, there was no refrigeration and the ocean voyage took nearly five months. As a result, the beer would usually arrive in compromised condition. Well, the brewers of the time didn't know as much about beer as we do today, but they did know that both hops (where we get the bitterness in beer) and alcohol act as natural preservatives. So, they came up with a brew that was intensely hopped and rather high in alcohol --- thus the birth of the

This beer comes courtesy of Chris Quiroga who was more than gracious in sharing his Stone Anniversary series last night. This beer pours a cloudy orangey color with hints of yellow and a thin white head which dissipated quickly enough. The aroma is piney...very piney...like pick the hops from my teeth piney and strangely enough sweet from caramel perhaps? The flavor is heavily piney..i mean really, did ya expect it to change? Significant levels of carbonation here... i cant believe this beer held up so well over the course of time. Very little if any of the 6.9% alcohol presence. Big time bittering tang....hoptacular!

Thanks to cquiroga for sharing. This IPA has held up well. Dry, bitter & tasty, I would have loved to have tried it upon its release.

This one pours with a golden orange body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma and flavor are sligthly sweet yet bitter with a slight tomato sauce note, a little grapefruit and a little pine. Medium bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

Enjoyed this a bit more than the 3rd, as I felt it held up a hell of a lot better. Taste had a bit more fruit to it although after all this time the hops fell. out. I could still taste some grapefruit as well as the bitter hops. Thanks again Chris.

GABF weekend... Poured a cloudy brownish gold color with a large white head and nice lacing on the glass. Spicy, citrus hop aroma. A nice tropical fruitiness in the aroma. Taste was oxidized, though not as bad as the 3rd Ann. Sweet tropical fruitiness (melons) and more bitterness than the 3rd as well. Also just a tad past its peak, but still a rare opportunity to try these!

This is yet another good Stone beer, but the original IPA is better.

"HOPHEAD's DELIGHT" should be it's name, big floral hop nose and bite, nice malt tones, WOW! what a treat, wish I'd ordered a case instead of 3 bottles. Not meant for the weak, as it will pucker your kisser in a heartbeat, God I love this beer.
