A wonderful return to nature, with its flavour of yesteryear, this is a beer that was drawn from the wooden metal-circled barrels to fill so many mugs in our Flanders bars! Its bitterness comes from our hop fields scattered throughout the region. Brewed by infusions, it is an old-fashioned rising beer made with strong and hearty Flemish hops. Fermented using top yeasts, like the barrel brewers of yore and clamped like bonderised barrels.

Could not isolate the smell. Almost a bread roll smell. Very drinkable. The 750ml bottle looks very daunting but have managed 2 bottles over 2.5 hours with food. No hangover on all "testing" sessions! Visited the brasserie and ordered some for home. All sorts of visitors arrived, housewives, priests and firemen for their "supply". I'm not a heavy drinker but I cannot think of a better beer to share over an evening.

To get the cork off was a bit of a battle, but you know that... Transparent beer, large head, lots of lacing, really small bubbles. Light white toast and some slight corn. Lightly sweet and malty, and medium to big bodied. Well balanced between malt sweetness and alcohol bitterness. Some light honey and maybe even a hint of yeast, but its all really subtle and restrained on the nose. On the tongue, a hint of spice, but really not much. A good beer, but almost generic in a way, and expensive. Some people seem to have come across some sourness that was in no way apparent in my bottle. I also didn't seem to have hardly any sediment...

From what has to be the most diabolically capped bottle ever conceived - really, the X-acto knife and corkscrew method should not be necesaary to achive the nearly two-fingered fluffy white head and the clear, light gold pour. Nice aroma, fruity, spicy, yeasty - just like the taste. Mouthfeel began on the light side, but did improve. The relatively high (8.5%) ABV suddenly appeared in the last half of the last glassfull. Awesome finish, I'd say. One of the better French beers I've had.

It pours a light golden with a thin white head and fairly copious lacing. An aroma of tangy malts, light hops, lemon and citrus, pears, grapes, apples, some bitterness and mild spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rather rich. Flavors of tangy malts, hops, lemon and citrus, pears, grapes and white wine, golden apples, bitterness and light tart, alcohol and mild spiciness. A solid golden ale ..

At first frustrated by the unique corking. That conquered I had a bright yellow colored beer wuth a big frothy textured, white head rising robustly above. Good hang time with a thick film and ringlet left bhind. Light notes of grass and yeasty sourness are in the nose. And in this effervescent smooth drink the same as the nose in the tasting, with some lightly acetic lemon.

    750ml bottle -

What a really nice beer, and while beers from France are (for me) typically horrible, this brewery continues to impress me. The beer pours out a beautiful looking lemony yellow body with a huge, fluffy, airy white head. Aroma has many layers of complexity. Lemon cake batter, shortbread cookies, light Champagne/white wine, and light spice. Flavor is also just as incredible with clean flavors of white grapes, sweet grain, apples, vanilla and light lemons. Really complex and each sip brings a different mix of flavors. Some sips are really sweet, some are fruit forward, some have a lemon twist. Love, love this beer but the price is a bit of a put off. Maybe the best BDG I've had? Not sure but damned close.

Sampled on 7/8/2011. This Biere de Garde pours a light orange gold color from a 750ml bottle. Medium sized white smooth foamy head with good lacing and nice retention. The aroma is fruity, grassy, yeasty and sweet. A light to medium bodied Biere de Garde. The malts are grassy, fruity and sweet. The hops are floral and slightly spicy. Very pretty lively carbonation, lots of small bubbles cascading to the top of the glass. Clean and crisp. Light and refreshing. Really surprising this beer is 8.5%, hides the alcohol very well. Very easy drinking beer, once you figured out how to open the bottle. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Glad I got this on clearance for 50% off, as I would not have paid the full $10. If I did pay the $10, would not have been pleased. Guess it was worth the fin though. Brought to a July 4th party and shared with the host and one of his friends. Had to drink it out of a plastic cup though, which may have hurt this sample a bit. Calling this a golden ale, but had some witbier qualities as well. Also reminded me of an imperial pilsner. Alchohol is hidden well, and a very light feel for this strength. Ok for sharing just to try, but so much other stuff out there.

Poured out a very light yellow gold, thick creamy white cap, excellent 360 degree lacing that is a bit slippery. Smells similar to a Euro lager, some yeast, some strong smell that hints at leather. The taste seems based on a Euro lager with a hard spice, nice quiet alcohol, Odd yeast. A bit hot. More alcohol now, too much alcohol for this. Nice interesting mild yeast burn. Highly carbonated, dry, light interesting spice on the finish, some burn. It’s a mild spicy / yeast / musty Euro lager mix. Highly anticipated opening, very disappointing overall. Booooo.

Very light pale yellow nice white crown lacing was descent. Very first inhale I dry heaved and eye’s watered instantly not a good start. Sour gueuze style aroma. Aroma is now better but not begging me to drink, honey, yeast, some apple. Aroma is just way to sharp for me to really enjoy. Apple honey flavor with zero sour but a strange bitterness. Mild citrus and a very dry finish with some cloves I think. Not sure I liked this brew but thanks jeff for sharing.

Corked bottle, with a stirrup. Poured a brillant straw colored beer with a great white foamy head with a long retention. Nice lacing and a mid sized carbonation. Aroma is fruity malt, gentle hops, nutty notes. The flavour is spicy, yeasty and vinous. The mouthfeel is rich, malty and quickly warming, hints of aciditic ( apple ) and a certain sourness. A long and strong warming finish with the contribution of the alcohol rate. A medium to full bodied beer with a lot of tasting. A quite impressive brew
