The absolute top quality in the hierarchy of the St. Bernardus beers. It is also the beer with the highest alcohol content. A dark ivory coloured beer with a high fermentation. The show piece of the brewery. Thanks to its soft and unconditionally genuine aroma, the beer can be smoothly tasted. The Abt has a very fruity flavour.

(New Year’s Eve tasting Flight (4 of 4) Pours a tan head of large bubbles. Lots of carbonation. Reddish brown in color. Cloudy. Not very aromatic. Heavy body with pronounced alcoholic tones. Flavors of dark malts very clearly. Maybe a hint of raisins? Not nearly as hoppy as their tripel was. Bit of warming in the aftertaste/pallate. A very nice beer overall, however, I tend to like the Rochefort 10 better.

Deep amber color with light tan head that seems to last. Great lacing. Aroma is light with hints of sweet fruit, malt and spice. Sweet fruity flavor underscored by some spicy notes. The sweetness doesn’t linger too longer and therefore doesn’t pile up making this very drinkable. Bit of a warm alcohol finish with a light yet lingering sweet malt taste.

Second sample, for first (2.9) read on: On tap again at the vintage estates. Much less enjoyable than the fist experience. more than I can appreciate and on the strong side. First sample:On tap at Vintage Estates Wine and Beer, thanks Ron. Cloudy root beer appearance with a rapidly fading head. Slight aroma of sweetness, barely any. Initial taste is very smooth, it really hides the alky content well. It leaves me thinking about how refined these Belgies are compared to many of the unrefined wanna be american craft brews. Surprisingly enjoyable for such a high alky %. Bready and flavorful. A decent brew for a sweet beer lover. Smooth creamy low level carbonation. Very civilized and easy to enjoy. Impressive for a style that I don’t care much about. A little more enjoyable than Ommegang Three Philosophers. Much better than Weyerbacher Quad and Avery The Reverend which both come across rather coarse when compared to this brew.

33cl at Cafeeke, Madrid. Pours clear, murky brown with a beige head. Malty aroma with dark, dried fruits, caramel and some roasted notes. Sweet and fruity, but very well balanced. Alcohol is well intergrated. Full body and high complexity. Some bitterness in the finish. Very nice! (2012-08-18)

Very dark brown color sorta syrup apperance with creamy head. Deep fruit smell tingles the nose. It has a nice fruit taste with sweet malty flavor that finishes with zest on the taste buds.

Big, rocky, tan head. Hazey dark brown color with some gold highlights. Fruity, yeasty, bready nose, banannas too. Medium body, real effervescent, prickly on the tongue, burps good! Sweet, fruity, spicey(cinnamon like), some oxydation, earthy. Finish is medium sweet with more fruits, apples and nanners. A pleasent 10%er.

Big nose .... raisins, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, whisky. Gentle pour produces a 3-4 finger head that is caramel colored with solid retention and great lace over a deep chocolate brown body that is nearly opaque. Mouth has great tingle with spot on carbonation...... medium bodied and nicely slick. So much going on flavor-wise. Plum, prune, coffee, bitter chocolate, followed by hints of fruit punch, ends with a hint of sour and, although alcohol well masked for 10%, a slight warming. Finish is long and quite clean. Neither sweet nor sour, with a hint of bitterness this is just perfectly balanced! Previous high score for some excellent brews from me is around 4.3 but if this isn't a 5 I don't know what could be. Simply perfection in a glass.

Great price at Lcbo for size of bottle! Pours a foamy average size, off-white head. Has a cloudy amber appearance, slightly murky. Weak lacing. Aromas of Belgian yeast, nutty malts and plums. Flavours of sweet, nutty malts, raisins and plums. Notes of caramel malts, earthy and resin hops. Also some hints of toffee. Average carbonation, full bodied mouthfeel. Sort of a fizzy, prickly sensation. Goes down extremely well. Good balance of malts and hops. Very good!

Cool! I finally got to try one of the top five rated beers. And it didn't disappoint. Beautiful dark brown color with great aroma of plums and raisins. Zero foam head when poured cold. VERY smooth with a light sweet after taste.
